Nothing Like a Little Sister

Gloria at Christmas time around 1971
Gloria at Christmas time around 1971

I was 3 years old when my little sister was born. She was born in April of 1966 and yes that makes me 46, wow where did all the time go? When my little sister was born she was a beautiful child, cute as a button you might say. Since she was the baby of the family and there were 7 of us, she was as spoiled by my dad as a little girl can get. We didn’t mind we couldn’t blame him. She adored my father and he adored her.

When we got older and I was a teen full of spit and vinegar, she was always trying to hang around me and I didn’t want the little runt around. I feel bad for that now, I didn’t know that she looked up to me; kids don’t know that at that age. If I could do it all again though I would have proudly let her hang out with me wherever I went, since she was pretty good at keeping secrets and still is I might add.

A sister is a little bit of childhood that can never be lost.

~Marion C. Garretty

We used to stay up at all hours of the night and she would listen to everything I said about my wishes and hopes and dreams. She would hang on every word. No one listens to me like that now, I guess I didn’t appreciate her when I should have.

Now that I think of it I think she must have had the patience of a saint to have to listen to all the boys that I had crushes on and the breakups that I endured. But she was there.

Now that we are older she is still there to go to when I am having a bad day or just need to talk to someone since she seems to understand everything that I have gone through and go through still. She is one of those people that are always there for you when you need them, always has a helping hand and gives great moral support.

You know they say that blood is thicker than water and that is right but it goes even deeper than that, there is an unspoken spiritual awareness between sisters and I think that it’s the same way with all my sisters. My brothers are different at least mine were. I guess in our family our sisters are what keeps our family together and whenever we see one of us trying to unglue themselves, we all latch on to each other and wont let go. That is what makes our sisterhood special and we are therefore forever bonded like that.

My Beautiful Sister Now
My Beautiful Sister Now

Gloria listened to me hours on end singing this song and never complained. This one is for you Gloria

A Poem For My Little Sister

From as far back as I can remember you have always been there

There have been many laughs and unfortunately many tears as well

We have had some fights but not very many

I will always love you

There are guys that come and go

and friends that may stab you in the back

But sisters are different they stick around

Even if you piss them off

You are someone I can count on

Especially when you know I’m wrong

Even when you know I’m right

You are there

I don’t have to tell you when I am sad

You always have a sixth sense about that

You always know when I am mad

That seems to have been a gift

I do love you for always being there when I need you

Even at the most inopportune times

You are my little sister

My blood

My hero

My friend

Such a sweet hub, ladyjane. I am sooo happy you have a sister. I have several brothers, but hey now I have a sister-in-law and we are close, and I unofficially adopt my younger friends as my little sisters that I never had!

ladyjane1 profile image

ladyjane1 6 years ago from Texas Author

Hey Ann thanks for your nice comments. My sisters have been through a lot together and I have a special connection with all my sisters and I am so blessed to have them. I hope you get to have a great relationship with your sister-in-law because that can be equally satisfying afterall she is part of your family now. THanks for reading.

My wife has two sisters, and they're all as thick as thieves. It's something I can't understand - but envy a bit.

Hello Tamarii2 I am glad that you have the sister connection because theres nothing like it. 7 brothers, wow I only have 2 brothers and they are both older, luckily my sisters and I out numbered my brothers although I love them just the same. Glad you enjoyed my hub and for visiting. Oh and for the Texas question.

My little sister and I hated each other growing up. It was just the two of us. But now if one of us needs something the other one is there. We have been through more then anyone needs to ever experience in a life time. But she is there for me and I'm there for her. Most of the time it's just a phone call since we live over 500 miles apart, but if it's something major we go to each other and do what we can for the other one and our mom as well.

I had three sister, one older and two younger, and I cherish them all...I wrote a poem about my favorite sister

that pretty much covers what your hub is about:

From The Ruts Of A Wagon Train Long Past.

I took quarters

in a bunk bed,

two stories slept

there comfortably,

sisterly love

ensconced above

and down below...

just me,

back when we were

both wee.

Sweet dreams were

wrought there nightly,

under a huge

Roy Rogers spread,

when cowboy

gear was king,

and up above you'd

find the head

of my Sister draped

in Barbie pink,

a current young

girl thing.

How often

Sunday afternoons,

we'd wile away the day,

changing bunks

to covered wagons,

where as western folk

we'd play,

Our horse was

but a rocker,

two sheets

our covered hoop,

as we traveled

on vast prairies,

down their grassy slopes

we'd swoop.

It was a very

special place

where often

we would

both explore,

a world beyond

the projects,

in a time when

we were poor.

We traveled on

as age crept in,

and set our feet

to wander,

that bunk bed's

in a landfill now,

but still moves

me to ponder.

How rapidly

life slips away,

beneath the

wheels of time,

and working days

replace the play,

back in that

simpler time.

Cowboys have faded

like the sheets,

that once made

westerns real,

though Barbie dolls

still grace the malls,

and offer vast appeal.

But we've both lost

our childhood days,

somewhere near

Donner's pass,

since age consumed

the flesh of youth,

we face a huge impasse.

Where we can

never go back home,

and loathe

our moving on,

towards what lies

over yonder ridge,

where other souls

have gone.

This is so beautiful! I never had a sister until my brother married recently; it's wonderful having a sister-in-law! However, through my childhood I was close to my 5 brothers. They were my playmates, best friends, etc. As I have gotten older, I have realized how special it was having siblings I was close to and really loved.

GojijuiceGoodness thanks for commenting. I don't know if I couldve been able to handle 5 brothers the two that I had were horrid lol. But I love them just the same. Thanks for visiting.

I'm the baby too, still trying to bridge gaps with displaced family. I feel like we shared a simpler time, I am 48. I too miss those days when we were all under one roof, fighting as siblings do... What I wouldn't give for one more battle of wills, one more chance to not tattle. We would cover for each other, so no one got in trouble, didn't matter who was right or who started it.

Ohma thanks so much for your kind words. Blessings to you.

Fabye thanks for reading this hub. I too wish we could magically be under the same roof again. Its hard as adults being in the same city let alone the same roof, but we try. thanks for your comments.

Wish I had a big sister, when I was little every Christmas I'd ask my mom for a sister and each year I'd get a doll, her thinking that was what I meant.... Cute hub.
