Grandmas Rule!

This is a brief summary of my life, a precis really. I have become a Grandma.
This status is a joy and it was worth waiting for this elevated position in life.

My brain was flipped from right to left at the same time I became an artist

Being a Grandma also entails hard work and a quick eye, kids move fast!
This new status bestowed on me by the birth of my beloved Grandson Alex,
is still my only claim to Grandmotherhood. Now I am a more relaxed version
of me, I hike in the mountains with my beloved partner, good friends and my
old dog, Otis, instead of galloping over muddy fields on my Arabian horse,
Kwayzia. No longer fired by ambition and the struggle to exist, pay bills, get
to places on time, work endlessly and keep up with a multitude of friends.
Now there is an acceptance of the pathway that life has given me. No flower
is too humble for me not to stop and admire its wonderful complexity, the
majesty of trees, the diversity of insects, the beauty of animals and birds and
the lie of the land. This earth is truly blessed from my perspective.
There is sadness too in becoming older, senses degenerate – why is the
telephone no. always in the smallest print on a business card, why do I fail to
remember people's names five seconds after an introduction? Indeed,
physical health is the key to becoming older gracefully. There is a sadness in
loosing touch with dear friends and beloved animals who die within a much
shorter life span and are still missed. Parents pass on and leave us at the
helm, a position we automatically inherit but often do not wish to fill!
Glorious places we visit or stay at for long enough to become hefted so we
miss them sorely when we leave.

All these are reasons for my joy at being a Grandma. Anytime spent with my
Grandson is a blessing and focuses my joy in the family. We now have a little girl so now I am doubly blessed. having a little girl is so different. She loves dollies and ponies but tolerates the airplanes and Star Wars Scrabble belonging to her big brother. Such fun. Being a Grandmother   is the center of my
being. I have become content. Grandmas rule!

What a beautiful and touching preview of this special place in life. As my eyes are already failing me (is that two "L's in failing or is it just the "i's" flanking it?) and my children getting older, it is comforting to see your perspective having beat me to that place. I enjoyed reading it. Thx.

Thank you again Paper Moon for your appreciation. Your comments always encourage me to keep going. I find this whole "hub" experience interesting in that I feel I am making a whole new set of friends.

Welcome to the best Club in the world, Grandparentship ?

When I became Opa some nearly 7 years ago I discovered a whole new and different kind of love that I had never experienced before. I still dote on my little Angel and we have been blessed with a little brother for her to bring and visit their Oma and Opa.

You are correct about finding new friends and you will probably become addicted just like a lot of us have. LOL

At the moment I only have one and one on the way so I am well behind you but I do see him on a daily basis so that makes up for it! Aren't they the greatest treasure? Thanks for the kind comment.

Thanks for sharing this experience and appreciation of life from a new angle – and deeply cherishing tiny aspects of this wonderful world might outweigh the challenges age has in store for us? Yes, grandmas rule! As a mom of two, I can tell you that grandmas (or, in our case, Oma and abuelita) are such an important and forming influence in a child's life. And isn't it fun re-discovering the world through the children's eyes?

Totally agree! We have been feeding the wild trout in the brook that runs through our garden, and then another session on the trampoline! They keep you young. Thanks for the comment.

I'm a grandma to a 4 yr old, more like 14! She's precocious and trying to keep up with her requires a lot of energy, patience and psychology! I enjoyed this hub a lot!

I know where you are coming from. I'm an older Grandma and I spend lots of time on the trampoline. Good for my wobbly knees I hope. We are expecting a girl in August and can't wait to do girly things for a change. Thanks for the comment.

I've got 15 more years I think, and I'm already looking forward to it. But I'm not looking forward to the sadnesses that come with it. All the losses. Nature has a strange way of keeping things balanced. I hope I remember that.

That is so true, others pass on and leave you at the helm like it r not. An important aspect is to keep really fit and well and that is what I strive to do. Thanks for the kind comment

Just looking at the photo, given me a flash back on my grandparents:

"Let me go and give them a call," love it: keep up the good work,

I really enjoy happy input. I shall have to frequent your hubs more often. When I do I always find you content and uplifting. It's quite the joy for me, as a reader. :)

I am so delighted by your comments as I try to make people happy . I have been truly blessed and love to pass on my blessings and share the good things and places where my life has taken me.

Iðunn 7 years ago

I have a tendency to dwell and occasionally sulk, in some moods, and it's not the least bit useful for me. I can tell you shall be a great blessing to me, as so many of my favourite other hubbers are.

Gypsy Willow profile image

I hope we will be hub friends. My animals don't let me sulk so its not something I suffer from. There is always some one needs attention or wants to go for a walk! What with grand children it's difficult to find time for one's self.

Iðunn 7 years ago

I'm fortunate enough to have all my grands living close enough to get them a lot and I have to say it does cut into the sulking time, lol. It's hard to be down when they are over or when I think of them. I too hope we develop into great hub friends. I think you have a great deal to bring to such a friendship.

However from my poetry, you can tell I've saved some time for dwelling too. I sometimes think I've taken sulking from a hobby to an art form. I'm a rather good whinger, as well. :D

This is beautiful, Gypsy, and so is your darling grandson! I'm going to be a granny in just a few short weeks -- of twin girls. I'm sure I'll be rereading this hub many, many times.
