"The Skirt"

Marie grew up in Sheep Creek, playing by the creek and in the forest all day in her overalls. Then she turned 6-time for school. Her school clothes came in an Eaton’s brown paper parcel. At Christmas those parcels had toys or books, but this time it brought a scratchy plaid wool skirt.

“Stay still, let me dress you.” said Mommy.

“I hate this skirt.” Marie said.

“You have to wear it to school.” Said Mommy.

Marie went to meet the teacher. She was tripping over the skirt and felt like she was choking. How could she walk to school in that terrible skirt? How could she sit on that scratchy skirt? She almost started crying. Soon as she got home she tore it off her skirt and put on her shirt and overalls. Marie felt much better. She made a plan, She knew that on the path to school past the big stump was her tree fort. It was the place to hide out. That night she shoved her pants up the sleeve of her jacket. On the way to school she crawled into the tree fort, stuffed the skirt in a hole in the trunk, and pulled on her overalls. They felt so good on her legs.

Marie sat at my desk and did all her addition.

“Very good work Marie. Here is a gold star.” said the teacher.

“Thank you Miss Cruikshank.” said Marie.

“But, Marie, why are you wearing pants? Where is your skirt?” asked the teacher.

Marie just looked down at the wooden boards on the floor.

“Take this letter home to your mother.” said the teacher.

“Yes Miss Cruikshank,

Back in her tree fort she pulled on that horrible skirt and stuffed the letter in the hole in the trunk.

The next day she did the same thing. By the end of the week she had five gold stars in her notebook, and five teacher’s notes in the tree. The teacher went to see her mom.

“Why is Marie coming to school in pants?” asked the teacher.

“No she isn’t. I dress her in her new skirt every morning.” said mother.

“Well, she is coming to school in pants.” said the teacher.

Marie’s mother was really angry.

“Marie, Marie, What the Hell were you thinking?” she asked.

“I hate that skirt. I won’t wear it.” said Marie.

“I’m going to spank you with the hairbrush.” said Mommy. “No, your dad will do it when he gets home.”

Daddy found Marie hiding behind the chesterfield.

He winked at her and said, “Scream real loud and pretend you are getting a spanking.” He pounded the chesterfield while Marie screamed. Daddy smiled at Marie.

So every morning Marie crawled into the tree fort and hid her skirt. Her teacher kept giving her notes for her mother. And Mommy kept trying to make her wear the skirt. But Marie was a good kid and Mommy didn’t want to spank her. Finally, by grade four, Mommy gave up.

Thanks for your comment writer20.Its sad what we put kids through. But it does make for good stories.Ten years is a lot of years in a school uniform.

I loved this great story. I felt very sorry for Marie having to wear that itchy skirt.

Between 5 and 15 I had to wear a school uniform, the first 10 years it was awful, brown and yellow with a white blouse. It took me years to wear brown again.

This brings back memories of those awful double knit stir-up pants with the line that ran down the middle of each leg which I had in many colors and wore almost daily from the ages of about 3-5 years old. Oh how I hated them. The stir-ups would never stay inside my black and white oxfords and when they were in my shoe I absolutely hated that lumpy feeling under my feet! Unlike Marie I never even thought of refusing to wear them! From my experience of having been a childcare provider and seeing many of these children become adults believe strong-willed children most often become strong, secure and successful adults. Teach a child right from wrong and watch over them but never break their strong will and tenacity for it may be what makes them our future leaders and oh,oh especially when payback comes and they have their very own strong willed child!----Thanks for the memories Marshacanada as well bringing back many memories and ideas for my first hub. So sorry for such a long comment!

Thanks for your comment Cagsil. Why didn't you like that pair of pants?

I wouldn't wear the skirt either and this story reminds me of a pair of pants I refused to wear. However, I didn't have(a must do) to wear anything special for school, so I never wore the pants. Cool story. :)

When I was six and just starting school, my mother put a scratchy wool knitted cap that tied under my chin to keep my head warm while waiting for the bus. I hated it. It scratched so much I itched all day long. I think I also hid that hat after a couple days in the trash can outside!!!! My mother still does not know what happened to that nice warm knitted cap.

Sounds like Marie was a very good problem solver, and dad was a bit of a supporter of this, too. Nice story. Congratulations on your hubnugget nomination. Good luck.

Very sweet tale. Children are very adamant about what they want and who they are. Too bad they lose some of that attitude as they get older.

I love your tooth brace story mistyhorizon. I took my brace out also-but too much and my teeth are still crooked.

Very funny story. I was a bit like that about wearing the brace on my front teeth, only I would take it out once I got to school, hide it in a tissue in my pocket, then put it back in when I was due to be collected from school by my Mum at the end of the day. Somehow I got away with this for a couple of years, and by that time the brace had done its job anyway, in spite of the fact I had only worn it about half the time I was meant to.

I have just read a hub "Should School Uniforms be Manditory?" I have mixed feelings about this.
