The Best of Firefighter and Fire Truck Videos for Kids
Firefighter and Fire Truck DVDs!
Boys and girls, alike LOVE fire trucks and everything firefighter. Kids become enthralled and almost mesmerized by the lights and the sirens. From about the age of two, kids will spend some of their "down time" watching and learning about their favorite things. A good kids' movie or DVD will be interesting, will not spend too much time on one topic and will provide some education. Kids learn more about the very serious principles of fire safety when presented in a memorable way. These are the qualities I looked for in firefighter and fire truck DVDs.
We have several DVDs about firefighters and fire trucks that get watched over and over. Here are the best of the videos, as tested - and retested - by my kids.
Mighty Machines: Lights and Ladders
The whole Mighty Machines series is popular with my kids. The fun narration, sometimes from the trucks themselves keep the kiddos interested. The songs are catchy and the segments are just the right length for little ones, with a cumulative running time of 90 minutes.
Lots & Lots of Fire Trucks (volumes 1 and 2)
This is currently my boys' favorite. Be warned, the beginning song is very catchy and you might find yourself humming or singing it for the whole day. This DVD shows the different kinds of firetrucks, tours a fireboat and a factory building fire trucks.
I originally found this on YouTube, then bought from Amazon as they had the best price and quick shipping. I can't count how many times my kids have seen this. And, it reinforces the lessons they have learned about fire safety too.

Firefighter George and Fire Engines, Fire Trucks, and Fire Safety (volumes 1 and 2)
Start Smart gets it right with these videos! This production is fun and informative and includes other educational elements as well, such as showing and spelling the words of the equipment they are teaching about. Kids get lost in these videos as they then watch that equipment being used to fight fires. Firefighter George and firefighter Christy are enthusiastic without being too over the top. I keep extras of this around as one of my standard birthday party gifts for my kids' friends, since it's both educational and exciting for the kids. Nothing but rave reviews so far.
Popular Mechanics for Kids: Firefighters and Other Life Saving Heroes
We don't own this one, but I think we will soon. It looks like this has something to add to the others and may be geared more for the 5 and 6 year olds, rather than younger children. The hosts are kids themselves, which I think, always makes it a little more interesting for the kid audience as they can imagine themselves having the same adventures. Looks promising!
Other Worthwhile Fire DVDs
I forgot we even had this one and it's really quite good. My 3 year old is watching it now and loves the part with the firefighters putting the ladders up and down!
This one is fascinating for kids (maybe in the 5 year old range) and adults too. Very interesting.
Other Firefighter Ideas...
If your kids, like mine, are bordering on obsession with fire trucks, you could have a firefighter themed birthday. I had my birthday boy dressed in the firefighter uniform, had a fireman themed cake (from our local grocery's bakery - just had them do a background of a road and some grass and sky and added matchbox firetrucks and roadblocks and such...) and had "sirens" which were really flashing beacons, stationed around the room. The Lots & Lots of Fire Trucks played in the background while they all played with the toy trucks and accessories. They had tons of fun.
