I do not have young children. It has not affected my childraising.
My son is 6, my daughter is 2, and my son is very interested in playing the games on Facebook. He cannot read, which for some of the people that are on my facebook that is a bit of a blessing, but he can see all the pictures. I have to be careful what is on the screen so I don't have to answer questions about other people's post. More often than not, my wife and I use facebook when the kids are asleep or when the other is helping the kids out. There is too much that can go wrong if little eyes are watching.
Other than that, Facebook is not affecting my parenting, but it does constantly remind me to be very careful what I say and who is looking at the posts. A good reminder for lots of people.
Facebook has had no impact on my parenting, I don't really view facebook as a medium to seek advice on parenting, it is purely social for me.
I have to say that facebook has not changed my parenting style, but certainly has added to the list of things I need to be aware of as a parent. My daughter is 13 and is definitely a part of this technological generation. She spends a good deal of time on facebook, therefore I need to remain vigilant and keep an ongoing, open conversation with her about it.
This access to technology adds another way strangers can gain access to my child. Also, my daughter's relationships with friends are different than my were. As an example, she went to a friend's birthday party the other night and ended up staying over with a group of friends. When she got home, she logged on facebook and was able to see who was still there, what they were doing, etc. Not only do kids focus more on their appearance, but they also have a knowledge about what their friends are doing when they are apart. I've seen this create jealousy and other issues that would not arise if facebook were not on the scene.
The world keeps changing and as a parent, I must stay in tune with what my child is interested in, who she is talking to and how it all is affecting her on a daily basis. It makes it incredibly clear how important communication is when we are helping our kids navigate this world. There is a delicate balance that must be maintained to support the healthy development of our kids.
I know my daughter is happiest when she spends time with her friends outdoors and in person. I take the time each day to pry the technology out of her hands and send her outside for fresh air.
