I know you have heard this before but every child is different (and yes I know how annoying that is!) My daughter spoke around 9 months and at 10 months was already putting words together. My oldest son didn't really speak hardly at all until he was almost a year and didn't speak well until he as 16 months. I have friends whose children are only a week older than either of my children and they all started speaking at different stages.

Some say more than others, but most are doing some kind of talking by age two.  Some start very young (like eight or nine months) and say single words.  Some say very little (maybe a word or two here or there) but then start talking "almost like adults" all of a sudden at two or so.    Children who aren't encouraged to talk and/or children who don't get much of a chance to talk (sometimes because of one or more close, older, siblings) may say little until after two.  It varies, but between eighteen months and two years old is when children generally put together two or three words.  Pronunciation-wise, some children speak very clearly right from the start.  Some talk up a storm but still have to work out perfecting pronunciation of some words between the time they start talking and the time they get to be about four years old (even if there are only a few words they don't pronounce quite correctly).  Children understand a lot of words long before they, themselves, can use them in speech.

Talking, as in babbling, starts anywhere from 4-6 months.

Actual words, around a year old usually. My daughter said Mama at 6 months, and that is the only word she knows for sure. She's almost 11 months now. Still waiting on some more words and maybe some walking. smile

In my baby's case he he started to speak clearly in 9 months and some words that he already know is  "match, egg, hotdog, mama, daddy, ate" and he was able to recognize and do actions some words that I used to write in white board like "clap, waving, point, yes, no, nose, beautiful eyes, kiss, toes, smile".

My relatives was so glad and amaze when they discover that my baby can already talk and read some words, maybe because I let my baby to watch some dvd that can stimulate his brain and teach him how to read. And I do it on a daily basis because my son really loves it and he's so addicted to watch it over and over,.
