   What was the most important thing you learned as a child?

   the most important thing i learned is that we are each responsible for how our lives go. we have to take the blame and be proud when we have reason. don't blame your crappy life on your upbringing or your abusive dad or on some creature like god or the devil.

   It took a long time to learn that no matter what happened in my life I was the only one who could get myself out of it. Things happen that you have no control over, but the things that you can control will ultimately get you past any obstacle. Never roll over and just let life walk all over you. Stand up and do something.

   The most important thing that I learned as a child is that a good education is the key to a better future.  In order to get a good education you have to study hard and always put in that extra effort.

   It was the funniest as well as the most important. I don't remember the age, but it was realizing I was a girl and not a boy!
   My father always wanted a boy and since I looked like one because my mom would cut my hair very short he always called me his son. I must have been pre-K and I can't remember how I came to this realisation. It was a matter of time that I would, right?

   My mom instilled alot of really good lessons growing up but two seem to stick out. The first is that we are responsible for our actions. She taught us that every choice we make whether good or bad has an effect on our lives and we alone are responsible for what we do. The second is that life is not fair. I heard it over and over again and she was right. Kids always think that just because someone else has it they deserve it too but life is not like that.

   The most important thing I learned as a child was to look at things from the other person's point of view.  When I had conflicts with someone, or when someone had been mean to me, my mother always helped me to think about what the world was like for that person and to try to understand their motives.  I do that now with my own children and with myself when I am upset with someone.  It helps to realize that the other person has reasons for behaving that way.  Sometimes, if you understand why they are saying or acting a certain way, it also helps to better respond to them.  Reading many books and taking on the characters in the books has helped me too.  I love Anthony Trollope's books especially for that.

   Other people can't read your mind. I was slow to speak up about things, but realised the only way to get your message across is to verbalize it. Guess that's about being assertive, which is an important lesson.

    I learned not to treat others as I was treated: never to allow a child to be abused or hurt, never to treat someone bad because of a disability or being different.
