To parents, WHAT TYPE of friends do YOU instruct your children to have?

One is known for the company he/she keeps. The right type of friends and associates with the right achievement ethic elevates one while those who possess a less than positive life ethic can be quite detrimental. Many successful parents strongly inculcate their children to only associate and choose like minded friends and associates. This explains why so many highly educated, upwardly moblie people only associate with those in the same category and instruct their children to do likewise. They know the folly of having associates who AREN'T in their category!

If you teach your child respect and how to be proper then more than likely that is the kind of person they will be attracted to as a friend. If we teach them hate and prejudice that is how they will turn out. If we forbid them to hang out with certain types of people then they will want to hang out with those people even more. We should give our children the freedom to choose who they would like to be friends with. Of course if they start hanging out with people who are causing trouble in your child's life, you should definitely speak with them and tell them why you do not believe they should stay associated with that person.

We have always encouraged my daughter to be friends with whomever she chooses and not to end up in a click just because she feels accepted. She has friends from all walks. some i must admit, i wouldnt want her to participate in all their activities. but she is very strong willed and accepts people for who they are. I would never discourage her from being accepting and befriending everyone. she is doing very well despite having friends some would consider bad apples. although she also has friends in sports, who are more academic and other areas as well.

I tell my daughter to be friends with the one who gives her the freedom to be what she is. It shouldn't be based on the acceptance criteria.

Children should have friends they feel comfortable with and  who are in their same group. With same interests and who want to achieve the similar kind of goals in that way they know where their goals lie ahead. Parents should  communicate about their children's friends but shouldn't choose their children's friends.
