A Guide: 5 Reasons to Buy an Infrared NuWave Pro Oven

I am not really the type of person who buys into the “As Seen on TV” products. I view them with skepticism or disbelief and do not want to waste my money. There is one exception, though. One product that has literally “haunted” me since I first saw its infomercial is the NuWave Pro Oven. The infomercial makes it seem like a miracle oven. It has been out there for around 10 years or so, but I have resisted its pull until this year.

About seven years ago, I went to visit my brother. He had fixed a beautiful roast beef and vegetable dinner. I was a bit surprised that he could cook such a delicious meal. After eating and clearing the table, I walk into his kitchen, arms filled with plates and bowls, and lo and behold there was a countertop convection oven: the NuWave Pro Oven. I looked at him, and he grinned. “Yep, I took that roast out frozen and put it on as soon as I got home from work. I guess you liked it.” Liked it? I loved it.

At the time, I could only find the Nu Wave on TV, and it was not exactly fitting into our budget, especially when shipping was added to the costs. After several more trips over the years to visit my brother and more Nu Wave Oven meals, I have felt tortured over getting one and trying to justify it to my husband. Finally, when my husband left for a business trip last year, I bought one. I couldn’t help it. I knew when my husband came home to see “our” new appliance I would need to have some good reasons as to why I bought it.

1. The NuWave Pro Oven Cooks Food from Frozen

We are empty nesters and do not always plan our meals like we did when the kids were home for every meal. Now, I can take a beef roast out of the freezer, put it in the NuWave Oven, and have a meal in an hour – less if it is thawed. The laminated "Quick and Easy Cooking Guide" with easy directions clearly printed on the front and back for different types of meats, vegetables, and pizzas is great for referencing how much time it takes to fix almost any type of food. It also shows you different cooking times for beef for those who like rare, medium, medium-well, and well-done.

One of my favorite things to cook from frozen, and the top selling point to my husband, was our 14 pound frozen turkey. Every year I worry about whether I have thawed the turkey long enough then cutting into a dried out bird that makes the one on National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation Christmas turkey look juicy. Then I worry about having thawed it too long and sending everyone home with salmonella. I can just hear my nieces and nephews, “Do we have to go back to her house for Christmas? Please don’t make us go!!”

With the NuWave Pro, it comes with an extender ring so a large turkey can fit. I let the turkey cook for 2 hours then took out the giblets. I let it cook another hour then took out the neck (paints a pretty picture, doesn’t it?). For the last two hours, I stuffed it with an apple, an onion, and two stalks of celery. I used olive oil when basting it, except during the last half hour when I used butter. I normally use butter but it browns too quickly in the NuWave and the olive oil was just as tasty. Also, to keep the turkey (or any other meat) from browning too much, I loosely covered it with aluminum foil. Because it is infrared, convection cooking, the air circulates around your food and cooks it evenly. I must say it was the best turkey we ever had. It was moist and flavorful. Best of all, it was easy to fix and eaten quickly.

2. The NuWave Cooks the Entire Meal and is Dishwasher Safe

I am one of those cooks who likes to put everything in the same pan so I don’t have a lot of clean up. The NuWave is perfect for this type of cooking and cleaning. About forty-five minutes to an hour ahead of the end of cooking, place your potatoes and other vegetables in an aluminum foil created bowl and brush with butter or olive oil. Voila, meat and vegetables are ready for the table.

Plus, if you use a cooking or baking spray, the clean up is even easier. You can either wipe the pan, grill, and cover down with soap and hot water, rinse it, dry it, and put it away. What I love is that it all fits into the dishwasher, so you don’t have to do any thing but put it in and turn on the dishwasher.

3. With a NuWave, You Free Up Oven Space

When you are fixing a big family meal for Thanksgiving or Christmas, you do not have to work around the time it takes for the turkey or ham to finish cooking in the conventional oven. The NuWave is a countertop oven, freeing up space. With the NuWave taking care of the main dish, you can use your oven for stuffing, dinner rolls, cobblers, pies, and many other side dishes that take less time than the meat. No more waiting around and worrying if all the food is going to be ready and hot at the same time.

4. Anything You Put in Your Regular Oven Can Go in NuWave

All your oven dishes can fit into the NuWave. It can be stoneware, stainless steel, or aluminum. You will not have to worry about anything exploding or catching fire like you would with the microwave. The NuWave also cooks your food evenly no matter what it is in.

5. Having a NuWave Oven is Cheaper than a Dual Oven

Dual ovens are awesome, but they are expensive, running in the thousands of dollars for a good one. With your regular oven and the NuWave Oven, you can get the same results as you do with a dual oven but for a much less expensive price tag.

These were the reasons I gave my husband for buying the NuWave Pro Oven. I was also ready with, “And how much do you spend on golf each month?” Fortunately, I didn’t have to pull out the big guns by going for his juggler (golf), but I was ready. At first he snooted his nose to it. Then I came home one night to a beautiful pork roast and vegetable dinner. He was very proud and enjoyed the ease of using the NuWave. A happy ending for all.

I am so glad you did a hub on this. I have looked at NuWave Pro and we have been thinking about buying one but just weren't sure about it. Now I know someone who has it and has tried. Thanks for this hub.

Moonlake, I LOVE IT! Also, I should add that you can find them at Kohls or some cooking outlet stores for less. Do not buy it from TV because the shipping is outrageous, which kept me at bay for years. Now that I have it, I believe it was worth every penny. (Online at Bed, Bath and Beyond with 20% coupon = $118.)

Thanks for dropping by!! :-)

What a great hub, Sholland10! You've piqued my interest by explaining it's great for those who live alone, as I do. In fact, I'm needing healthier and more well-rounded meals--and something easy to deliver. I enjoy the kitchen but don't have all the time to be there! And I laughed at "when my husband left for a business trip"! But, hey, that's when it's easy to buy...when no one's looking! At least it wasn't an impulse buy. Thanks for this informative hub...and the laugh.

What a great hub, Sholland10! You've piqued my interest by explaining its ideal use for singles like me. I'm in need of healthier foods as well as more rounded meals. I enjoy the kitchen but I don't have all day to spend there! I laughed when you said "when my husband left for a business trip"! It's always easier to buy when no one's looking! At least it wasn't an impulse purchase. Thanks for this informative hub...and a chuckle.

Thanks, Ithabise! I am glad you found it informational and humorous. I did sneak it in, and I am as frugal as they come - another reason it took me forever to decide to buy it. My brother has a smaller one - only difference is not having the extender ring that is shown on the one I have. I would pay the extra $20 for the extender ring - ya never know who's going to drop in. :-)

Miami, I hope you enjoy yours as much as I have enjoyed mine. There are so many things you can do with it from cooking frozen foods to baking pies to making breakfast on it. You can also use it as a dehydrator, too. Have fun with it!!

Thanks for dropping by!! :-)

Alice 4 years ago

I bought mine! We used it to cook our turkey dinner on. Since then we've been experimenting with a whole frozen chicken (2 hours), making beef jerky, baking potatoes - literally EVERYthing! What a wonderful invention!

I never heard of this oven. It sounds interesting! A brother who cooks for you sounds amazing!! He's got my vote and so do you!!:)

Hi Sunshine! It is interesting and fun! I love it. I still can't get over being able to cook a 14 pound frozen turkey in 5 hours! I had my regular oven to bake other things that I normally would have had to wait for the oven. Also, if I want fish and my husband wants steak, we can watch the time and cook both at the same time (steak would take a bit longer). It really is awesome.

Thanks for dropping by and reading! :-)

Hi, I liked this review, very informative. It sounds like the NuWave Pro would be a lot more energy efficient than a regular oven because you are not heating up the entire space of a regular oven. So you would be having some long-term savings due to the energy efficiency, I imagine.

I liked how you described everything really well for those of us such as myself who are not familiar with the NuWave Pro oven. Superb hub.

Also, thanks - I got your message regarding Facebook. I appreciate the info but actually I'm not on Facebook (& don't plan to be), but thanks for thinking of me! It is so nice of you & I appreciate your kind words!

sholland10 profile image

sholland10 4 years ago from Southwest Missouri Author

Hi Giselle! I do love this oven! You are right about it being energy efficient, too. It also cooks in less time than a regular oven. I must still be in the "honeymoon" stage with it because I am thinking about buying the travel bag accessory and taking it on vacation this summer. LOL

Not on FB? WHAT? LOL I am just kidding. My husband and several friends refuse to get an account. You would love the group, though. With your great hubs, I thought of you immediately. :-)

Thanks for dropping by and reading! :-)

I have never seen this interesting device. I like that it doesn't require any defrosting of frozen meats. Voting this Up and Interesting.

sholland10 profile image

sholland10 4 years ago from Southwest Missouri Author

Alocsin, it is interesting!! Not having to thaw the holiday turkeys made things so much easier for me, and I couldn't believe how moist they were! I hate thawing a turkey because you are supposed to be so precise, plus handling it... Not my favorite thing. I do love it. I fixed a pork loin on it the other night, and it turned out perfect!!

Thanks for dropping by, reading, and commenting! :-)

I'm sold! I want one - I have never seen that before!

The last commercial I was transfixed with were those "Eggies". Don't waste your money:) I got mine from Bed, Bath and Beyond for 1/2 price - still wasn't worth it!

Glad you picked a winner!

I have finally gave in to purchasing The Nu Wave Oven!!! After my oven went out & not cooking my usual Thanksgiving meal, my children convinced me to buy one. I'm excited and looking forward to using this product for my Christmas dinner. Reading your hub has convinced me even more. Great hub!!!!

sholland10 profile image

Hi Nina! Oh, you are going to love it. You can use it for anything. We love beef or pork roast in it. Also, if I want chicken and my husband wants steak, it is so easy to cook them together. Clean up is so easy too. My one suggestion is to buy some Pam to spray on the grill and pan portion. Also, I usually line the bottom of mine with aluminum foil to make easier clean up. Have fun with it. I am so happy you are getting one.

ENJOY!!

Thanks for dropping by! :-)

Hello sholland10, I got my Nu Wave oven and I love it!!!! I've baked some chicken legs and thighs....they turned out wonderful!!! The skin was brown and crispy, the meat was tender and moist. I'm wondering why I didn't purchase this item much sooner. Thanks for the recommendation.

sholland10 profile image

sholland10 3 years ago from Southwest Missouri Author

Nina, how tender and moist it makes any kind of meat is what amazes me. I wondered the same thing about not purchasing my NuWave Pro Oven sooner after I got it. I have made so many delicious meals with the NuWave that I would not have done if I had been relying on my regular oven alone.

Thanks so much for dropping by and sharing your story! :-)

Like you, I am also doubtful about how real and authentic those products advertised on TV. I am grateful you did a hub on this, and more so because you rated this appliance positively. I am going to check on that. Thanks! Voted up and interesting. :)

Hi VibeSites! I love ours. We have used it for so many things (turkey, chicken, roasts, and fish). It is so nice not to take so much time for preparation.

Cooking frozen food material is the most interesting feature of this oven (of curse for me).

sholland10 profile image

sholland10 3 years ago from Southwest Missouri Author

Hi New! I know, that is the COOLEST feature to me. I couldn't believe I didn't have to worry about thawing a turkey and it turned out in less cooking time to be the best turkey I had every cooked.

These are miracle ovens!! :-)

Thanks for your very informative hub on using infrared cooking. I think this is a very healthy alternative and am actually just writing a hub on a spa treatment that uses black silica stones that naturally emit far infrared. It originated in Japan. I hadn't thought of using it for cooking as well!

sholland10 profile image

sholland10 3 years ago from Southwest Missouri Author

Hi Kalmiya! Yes, it is so interesting how infrared works in different situations. I have to admit, I sat in an infrared sauna and thought about my turkey. LOL I am quite sure it is used in a different technology for both situations.

I do love my NuWave. It makes some delicious dishes. :-)

Thanks for dropping by. Good luck with your hub!! :-)

I LOVE my nuwave! We bought it because our oven broke an since it was on sale and we were just going to use it until parts came in. Needless to say our oven has been fixed for a year and a half and I haven't used it but once! I'm glad you added stoneware could be used. I always wondered but was scared to attempt it! Thank you! I'll be using some stoneware tonight!
