5 Ways To Make A Hit With Grilled Cheese

Updated on November 2, 2014

Just What Is Grilled Cheese?

In case you're wondering a grilled cheese is a very basic sandwich made with one or more types of cheese and various types of bread. Most also contain some type of spread like mayonnaise or butter. I love Grilled Cheese made on Sourdough Bread. It gives the Grilled Cheese a wonderful flavor.

Grilled Cheese is most commonly made by putting cheese between two slices of bread and then you fry it in butter or margarine in a skillet or frying pan. Some people want mayonnaise added to the sandwich before it is fried while other people want nothing to do with the mayonnaise. A few people use mustard in its various forms. And a few people like to add strips of crisp bacon to the sandwich before they fry it in butter or margarine until its golden brown on both sides. Flipping it once or twice while its cooking to make sure you don't burn it.

3. 1 Slice Round Provolone Cheese Per Sandwich.

Mix your Mozzarella and Ricotta Cheese together well. Now slice a loaf of Italian Bread very thin. Spread both sides of your sandwich with a thin layer of mayonnaise. Grilled Ham And Cheese Along With Serving Suggestions.

Here in the United States a very popular sandwich is a Grilled Ham And Cheese Sandwich. I like to make Grilled Ham And Cheese Sandwiches out of very thin sliced baked ham, American Cheese, yellow mustard on one side of the bread and mayonnaise on the other side of the bread.

You really should make it on sourdough bread if at all possible and it should be fried in a skillet in butter or margarine. You want the pan hot enough to grill the sandwich but not burn the sandwich. I serve this particular sandwich with a couple of dill pickle spears and potato chips. Sometimes I serve homemade potato salad with them. And people always love them. Cut the sandwich up in four quarters and keep the sandwich together with frilled toothpicks. Pile potato chips in the middle and serve the potato salad on the side.

Grilled Cheese With Bacon And Apple

Here's a delightfully delicious grilled cheese sandwich that is so delicious and filled with flavor.

For Your Sandwich You Will Need.

1.  Granny Smith Apple Peeled Cored And Sliced Very Thin.

2. 4 Bacon Slices Fried Crisp.

3. 2 Slices Yellow American Cheese.

You will want to use your favorite white bread for this sandwich. Spread each side  of your bread with a thin coating of mayonnaise. Lay a slice of yellow American Cheese on top of each side of your bread and on top of one side lay your bacon slices and thinly sliced apples.

Grill your sandwich in butter until golden brown on each side. Some people may want to add salt or pepper but its really not needed.

Where Did The Grilled Cheese Sandwich Come From?

Those very first grilled cheese sandwiches were made in the 1920s as soon as inexpensive sliced bread and sliced cheese became available. In those very early days in the American south a grilled cheese sandwich was known as a Cheese Dream. In some parts of Alabama you'll still find it referred to as a Cheese Dream today.

The Grilled Cheese Sandwich was made popular all over the United States after World War II because grilled cheese sandwiches were a favorite on US Navy ships during the war and when the men went home they told their families about those delicious grilled cheese sandwiches and the rest is history.

In the American south you'll find that tomatoes, onions, and peppers have found their way onto grilled cheese sandwiches. If you'll grill those peppers and onions in olive oil with just a little salt and pepper added you'll quickly discover that you have something real tasty. Try it and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Ham, Cheese, And Peppers Sandwich.

Here's my favorite grilled cheese sandwich and I think everyone who ever eats it thinks its flavor is so good. And some are really surprised at the combination of flavors in this sandwich.

For Your Sandwich You Will Need.

Italian Bread split down the middle and then cut across for sandwiches.

Go to the deli and tell them you want a pound or two of very thinly sliced boiled ham. You want your ham shaved as thin as possible.

You will want a jar of roasted red bell peppers sliced into thin slices.

Spread your sliced bread with mayonnaise on both sides. Add two slices of yellow American Cheese to your sandwich overlapping your cheese. Now place on a generous pile of shaved ham. Sprinkle with fresh ground sea salt and ground black pepper. Now place thin sliced red pepper slices on top and give a splash with vinegar and oil.

Now grill your sandwich in butter until golden brown and serve.

How About A Cheese And Pickle Sandwich?

This sandwich was first made many years ago in Great Britain in the very poor section of London called White Chapel. Here cheddar cheese is placed on sliced bread and then sweet pickles are placed on top of the cheese and then mayonnaise is put on top of that. The sandwich is grilled toasty brown on both sides and then cut in half and served. In some places you'll find that crisp fried bacon has made its way onto this sandwich.

Add Pan Fried Hot Dog Wieners To Your Cheese And Pickle Sandwiches.

A few years ago I discovered that around Mobile Alabama that the Cheese and Pickle Sandwich has a new addition. There wieners are split down the middle and fried well before being put inside the sandwich before it is grilled and served and yellow mustard has replaced the mayonnaise. It really is quite a tasty sandwich. I like to make them with both wieners and slices of crisply fried bacon. Now that is some more sandwich.

Sourdough Mozzarella Sandwich

This is the ultimate sandwich to serve with a great minestrone soup. Or with delicious cream of tomato soup.

For Your Sandwich You Will Need.

1. 1 Loaf of Sourdough Bread.

2. Deli Sliced , very thin sliced Mozzarella cheese.

3. 1 Tablespoon Very Fine Chopped Fresh Basil Per Sandwich.

4. Mix 1 Teaspoon Mayonnaise with 1/2 Teaspoon Minced Garlic per sandwich.

5. Salt and Pepper to taste.

6. 1 Tablespoon Finely Diced Tomatoes per sandwich.

Put your sandwiches together by spreading 1 side of sour dough bread with Mayo/Garlic and then sprinkle on the tablespoon of fine chopped tomato and 1 tablespoon of fine chopped basil per sandwich. Place at least 2 very thin slices Mozzarella cheese per sandwich.

Grill your sandwiches until golden brown on each side.

Tuna Melts Are Oh So Delicious

In and around Orlando Florida a very popular way of making grilled cheese sandwiches is to make a homemade tuna salad with plenty of sweet pickles in it and then you put the tuna salad and yellow cheese on the bread with a little mayonnaise on each side of the bread and then the whole sandwich is grilled until golden brown on each side in butter. You use butter not margarine to give these sandwiches a delicious flavor.

These are delicious served with fried dill pickles with plenty of Ranch Dressing for dipping your deep fried dill pickles in. Now let me tell you until you've tried this particular flavor combination you won't know what your missing. Click one of those links for a wonderful recipe for making the fried pickles.

Finally I hope you get to try the wonderful suggestions here for making a grilled cheese real soon. I promise you that all of these are wonderful ways to make grilled cheese. be real careful or you just might get addicted to something you find here.

You Will Need For Your Sandwich.

1. Extra Thick Sliced Bread If at all possible.

2. 1 Small Green Tomato Sliced very thin for each sandwich.

3. Grilled Brown Country Ham for each sandwich.

4. 1 Slice Munster Cheese And 1 Slice Cheddar Cheese per sandwich.

5. Mayonnaise to spread on each side of sandwich.

6. Salt and Pepper to taste for each sandwich.

Be sure when you are ready to cook your country ham that you wash your ham very well rubbing it between your hands to get rid of as much salt as possible.

When you are ready put your sandwiches together and brown in butter on each side until your cheese is well melted and your bread is brown.
