A Year Of Martinis
A Martini For Every Month
I have martini rules.
I'm not normally a "rules" person but a girl's got to have some standards and when it comes to martinis, these are mine:
1) There should be no more than four ingredients, one of which should be vodka. Sorry, I'm a vodka gal so when I say "martini" I really mean "vodka martini" (usually).
2) The ingredients shouldn't be too complicated or exotic and one should be able to easily put them them together while simultaneously carrying on a conversation with one's guests.
3) A vodka martini is a social drink. I serve one variety or another any time I host a gathering. Don't drink them alone (geez, have a beer!) and do use them as conversation starters.
I spend a lot of time searching for Martini recipes online that adhere to rules 1 and 2 so it finally occured to me to put a list together for people who just aren't really up for the recipe hunt but would still like to throw together a cool cocktail for company.
The mixing instructions for each month's vodka martini are as follows unless otherwise noted--"combine in a cocktail shaker, add ice, shake vigorously then strain into a martini glass"
January Champagne Martini. 1 oz. maple syrup liqueur, 1 oz. vodka, sparkling wine. Shake the first two ingredients together with ice, strain into a martini glass then fill with sparkling wine.
February Sweetheart Martini. 1 1/2 oz. vodka, fresh lemon juice, 1 oz. raspberry liqueur. Serve in a sugar rimmed martini glass.
March Irish Martini.1 1/2 oz. Irish whiskey, 1 oz. Irish cream, 1 oz. creme de menthe. OK, I broke my vodka rule on this one but it's my list so I can do that if I want.
April Easter Bunny Martini.1 1/2 oz. cherry liqueur, 1 1/2 creme de cacao, 1/2 oz. vodka, 1 tablespoon chocolate syrup. Garnish rim of glass with a bunny shaped marshmallow Peep.
May Cucumber Vodka Martini. 2 parts lemon vodka, 3 slices peeled cucumber, 1 tsp sugar, 2 sprigs fresh mint, 1 part lemon juice. Five ingredients in this one but they're easy. Muddle the mint, sugar and two of the cucumber slices in a cocktail shaker. Add the vodka and lemon juice and muddle well. Add ice and shake very well until the outside of the shaker is frosted. Strain into a martini glass and float a cucumber slice on top.
June Wedding Cake Martini. 1 1/2 oz. quality vanilla vodka, 1/2 oz coconut rum, 1 1/2 oz pineapple juice, splash grenadine.
July 4th Of July Martini. 1 1/2 oz. vodka, 1 oz. triple sec, 1/2 oz. blue curacao, dash grenadine. Mix all ingredients except grenadine in shaker and chill. Pour into martin glass. Add grenadine and it will sink to the bottom.
August Watermelon Martini. 1/2 oz. fresh lemon juice, 1 oz. melon liqueur, 1 oz. citrus vodka, 1 1/2 oz. watermelon juice.
September Caramel Apple Martini.1 1/2 oz. Pucker Sour Apple, 1/2 oz. Buttershots, 1 oz. vodka.
October Vampire Kiss Martini. Chill the ingredients before mixing. 1 part raspberry liqueur, 1 part vodka, 1 part champagne, wax teeth or candy corn for garnish. Layer the first three ingredients then garnish.
November Cranberry Martini. 1 oz. vodka, 1/2 oz. triple sec, 3 oz. cranberry juice, cranberries for garnish.
December Gingerbread Martini. 1 1/2 oz. citrus vodka, 1 1/2 oz. Hiram Walker Gingerbread liqueur, 1/2 oz. dry vermouth, 1/4 oz. simple syrup.
