How did a Neapolitan Cuisine that originated in Italy become so popular both Domestically and Internationally? Historically speaking the actual origin of pizza comes from Greece. Cheese, oils and herbs were added on bread by Ancient Greeks. During a visit to Naples in 1889, Queen Margherita of Italy was served pizza which resembled the Italian flag. It consisted of Tomato, Mozzarella and Basil. Ever wonder how the name Margherita pizza originated? Well now you know, where the roots began.

Pizza Crusts

The crust of the pizza varies from hand-tossed to Chicago style pizza. Traditionally the pizza crust is plain; but it can be seasoned with herbs, garlic or stuffed with cheese. If you have ever had the opportunity to eat a oven baked pizza from a wood-fired brick oven, the succulent blend of flavors ignite your taste buds. Authentic Italian pizza is made with wheat flour crust, San Marzano tomato, and mozzarella cheese formed from water buffalo milk. Much healthier then the ingredients that are commonly used in American pizza.

How did pizza become so accessible ?

The reason for pizza becoming accessible globally is due to the immigration of the Italian folk, who brought their dishes to other countries. They would share with others what they learned from their homeland.

Variation of Ingredients

In multiple Countries the variation of ingredients on pizza varies from Bacon and egg in Australia to Doner Kebab ( Turkish meat) in Sweden.

Countries all over the world have formulated their own creation and style of pizza. India's most popular toppings consist of Tandoori Chicken and Paneer. Pizza is so popular in Brazil, they hold a competition on July 10th of each year. The best pizza-makers compete with each other creating some of the best pizzas in the world. Israel serves both kosher and non-kosher pizzas. Due to the Jewish religious dietary, they are not allowed to mix meat and dairy products. Many pizzerias close on Passover when bread products are not allowed to be served. Parts of Pakistan also serve Pizza with spicy-sausage which is quite popular among the Pakistani people.

Asian Countries tend to lean more toward the Americanized version of Pizza. Domino's , Pizza Hut and Papa Johns' in Korea are some of the most popular pizzerias in the Country. Even in the capital city of Kathmandu, international pizzerias are more popular among the people then it was in prior years.

On the flip-side Johannesburg, South Africa still holds the Guinness book of World records for the largest pizza ever made. In 1990 they made a pizza with 1100 pounds of flour, 1764 pounds of cheese and 1985 pounds of tomato puree. It measured 37.4 meters (122 feet x8 inches) in diameter. Imagine how many mouths that fed?

Popularity of Pizza

Pizza is popular because it is easy to make. All types of ingredients can be placed on it. The combinations of flavors tantalize our taste buds. It is also a main dish for Countries all over the world to serve and is a great conversation piece when you are among friends. How many other foods when you travel remind you of home?

A delicious hub about one of my favorite food dishes! This is the first time I knew about how margherita got its name from. Nice to see that you mentioned India - my home country. Pizza in my country is extremely popular and there are 100s of Pizza Huts, Dominoes and such almost all over the country! Now I am weight-conscious and opted for healthier home-made pizzas with far less cheese and more vegetables & fruits for toppings. Seems you churned engaging hub after another. Keep on entertaining us with more hubs from you!

Thanks for SHARING. Interesting. Voted up.

Nice to read a hub I can sink my teeth into. Sorry, a bit corny for first thing in the morning. I actually learned something in this hub about a subject I thought I knew everything about. Great job of educating this old man.

Bayler Daniels: Pizza with fish sounds good. I have always been willing to try something new. I am not keen on pizza that has fruit on it, but I can say I have tried pineapple and canadian bacon at least once.

My theory AEvans, since I like mine a certain way with certain toppings, is the blending of flavors and the texture of the crust seem to tantalize my taste buds.

You never know when knowing how a Margherita pizza got it's name will come in handy. It could be the winning answer in a serious game of Trivial Pursuit.

I'm not sure how crispy that world record pizza would have been and how did they cook it?...Something to kid the children googling!!

An interesting hub and hope the 30/30 is going to plan.

Voted up.
