Atlanta's Jazz - and a Romantic Restaurant

One of Atlanta's Most Unique Restaurants

I was visiting my thoughtful son and daughter-in-law over Mother’s day in Atlanta and they wanted to take me out to dinner at a jazz restaurant that is located in a boat built on land. I was certainly ready to go, but they wouldn’t tell me where we were going. I was pleased when we arrived at one very unique restaurant. It’s called Dante’s Down the Hatch, An Atlanta Jazz Club. It is one of the best restaurants in Atlanta and has won dozens of awards through the years. They have a jazz trio that plays six nights a week

Unusual Architecture for a Restaurant

Dante’s dream created a whole entertainment “complex around the illusion of an 18th century ship tied to the wharf of a mystical Mediterranean village.” Dante was a Navy Seal before building the restaurant, but what an imagination. It is a strange illusion to walk into the restaurant and stand next to the moat that surrounds the ship knowing that is where the crocodiles reside. You can opt to sit on the ship, which is slightly more expensive or choose a table in one of the other areas. We sat on the ship. It is so unlike the newer style of restaurant today as you can sit in an area that has complete privacy due to the fact that the restaurant is divided in 13 levels.

There are completely enclosed cabins for dining or drinks, but they all have a view of the entertainment. You can actually have a conversation that is not drowned out by the noise of other diners. If you look up you see the stern of a full-rigged mast and sails. The restaurant is decorated with wonderful memorabilia and priceless antiques. There are clocks from the original Lloyd’s of London and paneling from old English banks. The atmosphere is mysterious and romantic, yet friendly and funny as well.

Dante's location is right in the downtown area of Atlanta on Peachtree Road, so It is easy to find this neat restaurant.

Dante's Enjoys Great Popularity

Dante’s entertains people from around the world and has menus in 55 languages. The wine is another unique thing about Dante’s. They have the most comprehensive wine list in the Southeast, starting with Atlanta’s lowest prices of $16.00 to wines well over $800.000 (we didn’t try one of those).

Jazz Trio

We enjoyed a jazz trio playing light jazz which was just delightful. Apparently over the 33 years the restaurant has been open, they have only had four different jazz trios. The music is different depending on which night you visit. For instance, on Mondays they have a jazz acoustic guitar and vocalist. Other nights have jazz trios and vocalists.

Variety of Fondue Meals

Last, but hardly the least was the wonderful food. Fondues are the way they serve all there food and it is excellent. For instance, they trim their wonderful beef which is made using tenderloins from only Tasmanian cattle, so there are no tenderizers, marinades, chemical hormones, etc. The beef fondue is excellent They serve several other fondues as well, such as imported Swiss cheese, Chinese dumplings, vegetable fondue, and they do have a regular meal with chunks of chicken. They serve everything with fresh vegetables and sauces.

Summary

We were very delighted with our meal. Two fondue forks are served so you can cook 1 piece of vegetable or meat, while you’re eating the other piece of meat or vegetable. The food was wonderful and so much fun to eat in a non-traditional way. Desserts were also available but we were too full to consider even looking at that menu. It was a lovely evening where we enjoyed the food and the jazz trio, but laughed and had just a wonderful time together. This jazz restaurant and that night will be in my memory for a long time.

Katiem, It is worth going there because it is so unusual. I loved that you could still eat somewhere in a restaurant and have some privacy. I loved the fondue also. Thanks for your comment.
