Bean Recipes For You
There are so many ways to flavor and spice beans up; below are just a few tried and true recipes sure to please.
Boston Brown Beans
1 package od dry navy beans
1 medium onion-chopped
4 strips of bacon-cut into 1" pieces
3/4 cup of brown sugar
1/4 cup of molasses
1/2 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons mustard
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
about 6 cups of water
Soak beans for 6 to 8 hours to soften
Add all ingredients.
On high heat bring to a boil
reduce heat to medium low, cover with a tight lid and let cook for 3-4 hours or until the beans are tender.
You can also cook this in a slow cooker on low for 5-6 hours or on high for 3-4 hours or until beans are tender.
My Family's Favorite (No Name Bean Dinner)
4 - 15 ounce cans of pork n beans
1 large yellow onion-chopped
2 pounds ground beef
1/2 cup of brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
pinch (about 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves (a small amount goes a long way)
1/4 cup barbecue sauce
2 tablespoons of oil
1 tablespoon of butter
pinch of salt, about 1/8 teaspoon
In large skillet, melt the 2 tablespoons oil , 1 tablespoon of butter together.
Add the onions and pinch of salt.
Sautee on low heat for about 5 minutes.
Add the ground beef along with the onions. Cook until meat is done, fully browned.
Next add the remainder of ingredients, starting with the beans.
Toss and stir to mix well.
Heat on medium high heat, then reduce to low heat and let simmer for 20 minutes, stirring often to prevent sticking to bottom of pan.
Easy Southern Favorite Red Beans and Rice
4 cups dry small red beans
1 large onion - peeled and chopped
1 pound of ham-cut into cubes
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
2 cups rice
2 tablespoons butter
In slow cooker add the beans, chopped onion, salt, pepper, ham and butter.
Cover with water to about 3 inches above beans and other ingredients.
Cover and cook for 2 hours on high.
Add the rice, then stir.
Cook for an additional 2 hours or until beans and rice are tender.
Stove top method
Soak beans for 6-8 hours
In large pot add beans, onions, salt, pepper, ham and butter
cover with water 4 inches above ingredients
cook for 1 1/2 hours on medium heat
add the rice and cook for an additional 30 minutes or until tender.
Quick Bean Salads
1 can red beans-drained and rinsed
1 can garbanzo beans - drained and rinsed
1 can corn-drained and rinsed
1/2 small onion chopped
1 cucumber - peeled and cubed
1 tomato-cut into cubes
1/4 cup Italian dressing.
In salad bowl, add all ingredients together. Toss to coat.
Place items below in a salad bowl
1 can black beans-drained and rinsed
1 can black eyed peas- drained and rinsed
1 can corn - drained and rinsed
1 can chopped stewed tomatoes, juices drained
Toss to mix
In separate small bowl
2 cloves of garlic-chopped fine
1/4 finely chopped onion
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons of olive oil
2 tablespoons of water
1/4 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
Stir or whisk to mix well or place in a blender and blend until mostly smooth ( I like the blender method best but if no blender is handy just stir or whisk)
Pour over ingredients in the salad bowl and toss to coat.
Baby Green Lima Beans, So Simple Yet So Delicious
2 cups frozen baby green Lima beans
10 tiny pearl onions
2 strips bacon-cut into 1" pieces
1 tablespoon butter
salt and pepper to taste
In large skillet cook brown bacon-leave drippings in skillet
add the frozen baby Lima beans and pearl onions
add the butter salt, pepper and enough water to cover 1" over the top of ingredients
On high heat bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium low, cover and cook for about 25-30 minutes or until tender.
Bean, Pea and Corn Salad
In large salad bowl add the following ingredients:
1 can of red beans - rinsed and drained
1 can of black eyed peas-rinsed and drained
1 can of corn - drained
1 medium onion - chopped
1 clove garlic - chopped or 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 cup fresh parsley leaves- chopped
2 basil leaves - chopped
Toss to mix
In a small bowl add 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon sugar, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon cracked pepper, 4 tablespoons olive oil and 1/4 cup of water. Stir with wire whisk to mix well. Pour over the ingredients in large salad bowl and toss to coat.
