Best Popcorn Toppings & Creative Popcorn Topping Ideas

Popcorn: Always a Classic Family Favorite

Every Friday or Saturday night is movie night at my house, and this is probably the same for half of all Americans on any given weekend. And what goes the best with movie night other than a comfortable blanket and good company? A freshly popped bowl of popcorn, of course!

But what happens when the typical bowl of popcorn slathered in butter just isn't satisfying your movie night cravings? Re-think what toppings you use on your popcorn, and your popcorn experience will be enhanced. Ditch the greasy fake butter and check out some of these creative and daring popcorn topping ideas...get ready to drool.

Savory & Full of Flavor Popcorn Toppings

Old Bay

As a child growing up in the state of Maryland right on the Chesapeake Bay, there was one thing we loved more than popcorn...and that was seafood. Particularly we loved Maryland blue crabs in the summer. And what was a staple topping on those steamed MD blue crabs? A delectable, yet simple seasoning known as "Old Bay". You can find Old Bay in any grocery store in the spices aisle now. Why not try it out on your popcorn this weekend? We use Old Bay on our popcorn from time to time and it gives movie night a whole new twist...and a bit of that Old Bay spice.

Cool Ranch

Another cheap and amazingly flavorful popcorn topping idea is to use Hidden Valley's Cool Ranch on your popcorn. I'm not talking about the wet salad dressing in a bottle, though. I'm talking about the dry dressing that comes in a pocket-sized packet. These can also usually be found in the spices or condiments aisles in your local grocery store. If you love Cool Ranch Doritos, your mouth will water over Cool Ranch popcorn!

It Ain't Easy Being Cheesy

If you're as much of a fan of cheese as you are of butter, why not try out some cheesy toppings on your popcorn? This is a popcorn topping idea that almost everyone has in their refrigerator, just waiting to be used on movie night to please the entire family. Pull the shredded cheese out the fridge drawer, and after you've popped your popcorn, sprinkle the shredded cheese on top and melt it slightly in the microwave. Yummy!

If you don't have shredded cheese but you have a block of cheese, shred the cheese yourself and then use it as a popcorn topping...Monterey Jack, Colby Jack, Cheddar, and even Muenster all taste amazing as popcorn toppings.

Some people even use the dry cheese from a Mac N Cheese pack as a cheesy popcorn topping. I'm not sure I'd be down for this, but if you try it out let me know.

Super Sweet-Tooth Popcorn Topping Ideas

For those of you who want to sweeten up movie night, check out some of these candy-store super sweet tooth options as popcorn topping ideas:

Remember being a kid and having your parents make you cinnamon-sugar toast? Well, I sure do. Take those childhood memories and put them on your bowl of popcorn and you have a recipe for movie night success. Your children will especially love this idea.

Now this may seem a little far-fetched, but trust the internet when we's finger-lickin' good! You'll want to pre-make the bacon and crumble it up before popping the corn, of course. After the popcorn is out, add your bits of bacon to the popcorn and mix it around well. Then drizzle your melted caramel over the entire batch. Mix well again. Then enjoy this Southern twist on an old treat. Now that's a creative popcorn topping idea!

Caramel and cinnamon-sugar not your thing? Be your chocolate-lovin' self and add chocolate to that bowl of'll remind you of a chocolate-covered pretzel. Or make your popcorn equivalent to a doughnut and add some powdered sugar, baby!

Get Your Spice On!

Not everyone has a sweet tooth, in fact many of us might even prefer something more lively...some hotter...get your mind out of the gutter, I'm talking about spicy popcorn toppings folks! For those who live in the South and/or like a little heat, try out some of these spicy popcorn topping ideas:

Red Pepper Flakes

My husband likes to put red pepper flakes on literally every meal, so I challenged him to try it out on popcorn. He did and he loved it. Red pepper flakes are here to stay as a mainstay popcorn topping in our house, you should try it out too.

Louisiana Hot Sauce & Tobasco

Dry toppings are out the door. Wave red pepper flakes goodbye and try out your favorite hot sauce on your popcorn instead. Our house has tried out Louisiana Hot Sauce and Tobasco on our popcorn, and while it's hot and is worth it. Or if you're a fan of Cholula or Sriracha, try those on your next bowl of popcorn...maybe just keep it separate from the kids' bowls.

As with many, the New Year brought my husband and I the resolution to eat more healthy. With this in mind, he recently surprised me with a really nice Wok. While I love cooking Chinese type foods, we discovered that we can actually pop popcorn in it, as well. These topping ideas will definitely come in handy now! :)
