Butter Tart Squares and Cherry Squares

Sweets For Christmas

Butter tart squares and cherry squares

Both of these recipes were passed down to me many, many years ago, and each year at Christmastime I usually end up making a few batches for friends and family to enjoy.

I'm not much of a pastry person in the fact that I've never been able to or had the patience to make pastry. Butter tart squares rather than butter tarts are the perfect alternative for me. With a shortbread type base for the crust or the bottom of the square along with the sweet nutty sticky filling top, they are definitely a crowd-pleaser.

These squares are very sweet so you may want to cut them in small portion sizes.

Ingredients for Butter Tart Squares

For the base or bottom of your squares you will need the following:

  • 1/2 cup of butter
  • 1 cup of all purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp of white sugar

For the butter tart square filling and top you will need the following:

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups of brown sugar
  • 1 tsp of vanilla extract
  • 3 tbsp of all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp of baking powder
  • 1 cup of pecans or walnuts (I used pecans)

Instructions for Butter Tart Squares

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Cream butter well with the white sugar, then add flour mixing well making sure that everything is creamed together.
  3. Press the mixture into an 8" x 8" baking pan.
  4. Pop this into the oven and bake for fifteen minutes.
  5. While the base is baking you can prepare the topping mix.
  6. Mix the brown sugar well with the eggs until the sugar has melted. Add and mix in the vanilla extract.
  7. Stir in the flour and baking powder mixing well.
  8. Add the nuts mixing again.
  9. Once the base is cooked spread the topping mix evenly over the base and return to the oven for another twenty minutes.
  10. Remove from oven and completely cool before cutting.

Because these two recipes are quite similar in regards to both having a base recipe that is almost the same, I tend to make them at the same time.

Dianna, I love the recipes that have been handed down and these two I make every year at Christmas. Which reminds me I have to get busy this week and get the baking started.

dawnraeb, I like them because they're so much easier than making butter tarts, but this year I've promised hubby I'd try my hand at making the pastry for the actual butter tarts themselves. Wish me luck :)

dawnraeb 3 years ago

I've never heard of butter tart squares. They sound wonderful.

RH, They're great with morning coffee to give you that sugar high zip :)

I find if I have patience and am in the mood to make pie crusts and tart crusts I do okay with them but yes buying the pre-made ones are the way to go.

I bet these are delicious! I love the way the photo shows it pre-cooked and then how cool it looks baked. I love cherries and I really have never made squares like that before. I bet they would be wonderful with morning coffee!

I never make my own pastery either - it's cheap to buy and I just don't think I can do a better job. It takes time to make it so I would rather spend the buck and save the hour:) lol

Nice recipe hub Susan, I definitely dig eating yummy snacks like this one for the holidays, and I'll let my wife know I bookmarked it for sure, she's the baker in the family as you may know already from many other hubs I commented on of yours.

Nicely written, and well done with the positioning as you always do so well. Smooth stuff!
