Condensed tomato soup is good all by itself, but is more often than not used in recipes as a sauce base or flavoring ingredient in cooking. Since it has a sweet tomato flavor, tomato soup is used in everything from salad dressings, meat loaf, pasta sauces, and even baked goods. In baked goods, tomato soup goes well with chocolate, spices like cinnamon and allspice, and gives a nice overall color to the finished product. Since it is readily available and an inexpensive pantry ingredient, many community cookbooks use it as a staple cooking ingredient.

Here are some recipes to try using tomato soup.

Sherry Tomato and Pea Soup

  • 1 can condensed tomato soup
  • 1 can condensed split pea soup
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup half-and-half
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 5 Tablespoons sherry

Combine the soups and water in a saucepan. Heat together over low heat, stirring the soups until smooth. Add in the half-and-half, and sugar to taste. Add in Worcestershire sauce and Dijon mustard. Remove from heat, and add in sherry. Serve hot.

Tomato Soup Spice Cake

  • 1 can condensed tomato soup
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 3/4 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Mix everything in a mixing bowl until smooth. Transfer the batter into a greased and floured cake pan, and bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for about 30 to 40 minutes, or until the cake tests done in the center.

Cool for about 5 minutes in the pan, then unmold and let cool completely on a cooling rack before icing.

Tomato Soup French Dressing

  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 teaspoon sweet paprika
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • Salt

Whisk all the ingredients together in a mixing bowl. Transfer to a dressing bottle. Recipe will keep, stored covered in a refrigerator for a week.
