About The Ultimate Appetizers Book

Part of the Better Homes and Gardens series of “ultimate” cookbooks, The Ultimate Appetizers Book is written with the needs of those who enjoy preparing (and eating!) simple yet delicious appetizer recipes for a variety of occasions, ranging from everyday snacking to family gatherings to elegant entertaining events.

The Ultimate Appetizers Book features more than 450 recipes for starters, each one written in the no-nonsense, easy to follow approach that readers expect from a Better Homes and Gardens publication. Whether you’re just beginning to experiment in your kitchen or if you’ve been preparing recipes for friends and family members for years, you’ll find this book to be an invaluable resource when you’re looking for appetizer recipe ideas.

Book Organization

The Ultimate Appetizers Book opens with a “Party Basics” chapter that provides readers with helpful tips and suggestions for making sure they’re always ready to prepare for entertaining and appetizer based meals. The section starts with party planning and organizing tips, suggestions for time-saving store bought items, information on stocking a home bar, party menu and presentation ideas and much more.

After the introductory chapter, the book’s focus is on recipes – hundreds and hundreds of appetizer recipes. The chapters are arranged by recipe type. Chapters include:

  • Dessert Dazzlers
  • Embellished Breads
  • Fanciful Pastries
  • Hot and Sassy Chicken Wings
  • Meatballs ‘n’ Sliders
  • Veggie Twists
  • Wings ‘n’ Things
  • Several other chapters

Recipe Examples

The recipes presented in The Ultimate Appetizers Book are practical, easy-to-prepare dishes that busy modern home cooks will be able to successfully make on their own. You won’t have to purchase exotic ingredients or special equipment just to try out most of the recipes. Instead, you’ll be able to use items you already have or that can easily be found at your favorite supermarkets to create delicious appetizer recipes that are sure to be a hit with everyone who tries them.

I’ve tried several of the recipes from The Ultimate Appetizers Book . My favorites so far are Mexicitos, which are meat filled turnovers that use ground beef, a few spices and packaged biscuits and the Spicy Taco Cheese Log, which is a cream cheese-based spicy cheese log that’s a perfect partner for Mexicitos! Both dishes are easy to make, yet look and taste like they took a lot of time and effort.

Of course, there are plenty of other great recipes in the book to try. A few that look particularly great include:

  • Dried Onion Cheese Ball
  • Easy Olive Focaccia
  • Marinated Shrimp Scampi
  • New Orleans-Style BBQ Shrimp
  • Sage and Bacon Meatballs
  • Sugar and Spice Pecans
  • Parmesan Crusted Chicken Bites
  • Hundreds of additional dishes

When I go out I always order appetizers instead of a meal. If I could get away with it, I would just eat appetizers at home also! Problem is, I'm not the best cook and I don't think anyone here would be willing to make me a special appetizer dinner every night. Now I have hope though, I think I will get this appetizer cook book as a little Christmas gift and volunteer as a tester!
