Linda, I have a slow cooker and have never used it. I think the only recipe my mom used a crock pot for was shrimp gumbo when we were growing up. I know a lot of people swear by them. Maybe one of these years I'll get the gumption up to use it.

Don't the potatoes get mushy after cooking for so long?

Hi Shauna-No, they don't get mushy because you cut them into big chunks. I also use the red or yellow (Yukon) potatoes because their heartier and hold up better. You have to try your slow cooker-it's so fun to prep it and then just wait for the crock pot to do the rest. I love how the house smells while it's cooking. Give it a try one of these days.

I have at least two if not three crock pots and have never mastered it. Seems the only time I did try it I had it on all day and was cooking beans and by evening they were barely warm and not cooked for sure!

This recipe makes me want to try though and I do love the thoughts of slow cooking something aromatic all day, especially in winter. I love ranch flavor; so I will try it. Maybe I can check my cooker settings and go a bit hotter or faster? lol

Hi Jackie-Trust me, their is really no way to screw up this recipe unless your crock pot isn't working correctly. You can always check part way through cooking to make sure the temp is hot in and outside of crock pot. It's so fun to use these babies, and the smells-OOHH, the smells!!

Great to have you stop by Rachel-There are so many reasons that make crock pot cooking great: Less heat in summer, Less dirty dishes, aroma in the house, easy breezy once the food is in the pot, etc...

Our crock pot has been in the cupboard for far too long. You have inspired me to get it out and start using it again. This time of year it is perfect so that we do not heat up the kitchen since our air conditioners are working overtime with temps outside around 100 degrees. Your creamy ranch potatoes sound delicious. Sharing this with others.
