Buy a slow cooker!
While, I would never suggest making a crockpot ham for Christmas dinner (Oven baked Honey Ham has no substitute,) I do on occasion get a hankering for ham throughout the rest of the year, but don't often have the time or the extra cash to buy and make a whole ham. I found a simple, 'prep it and forget it' solution. I buy a pre-cooked ham when it's on sale at the grocery and cut the ham into 1-2 lb sections (enough for one meal and leftovers). Wrapping the ham in plastic wrap and then freezer paper, I can store the ham in my freezer chest for up 3 months.
To make the ham you'll need a crockpot, brown sugar (1/2 cup for 2 pounds of meat), and 1 tsp ground mustard. Put the ham in your crockpot and sprinkle brown sugar and mustard seed over top. Cook on low for 5 hours defrosted ham (8 hours) if frozen.
Ham cooks in its own juices, so it stays much more moist than cooking in the oven and once you get it going, you can forget about it until dinner time!
Easy Pulled Pork
Looking for an easy way to make pulled pork? Throw it in the crock pot and cook on high heat 6 hours. Take the pork out and shred it on a plate using a fork. Back in the crock it goes and smother it with your favorite BBQ sauce. Cook another 2 hours on low heat. Easy and so delicious!
Sprinkle a generous amount of salt and pepper on both sides of your roast and brown it in a skillet on the stove on al sides. Throw it in the crock pot with a cup of water or beef broth and let it cook on high heat 6 hours or low heat for 8-10. Throw some carrots, potatoes, and/or turnips on top and you have a complete meal ready for you when you walk in the door after a hard day's work!
