Chips, soft drinks, and candies for recess… this is the worst diet for growing school children and adolescents, or anyone for that matter. Yet school canteens take in big profits selling all sorts of junk food to a captured student market.
What do schools actually offer students in terms of diet? A school may give excellent training in academic skills. But of what great value is such education to a junk-food addict whose body is slowly poisoned by artificial food colorings, flavoring and preservatives? The diet students take in their early years determines their physical and mental growth potentials. Should we not show great concern both to what students digest mentally and physically?

In any case, the schools have been trying to focus on various education. Now, one of the basic things we do every day is eat. Shouldn’t we learn the precept “eat to love” and not “live to eat”? Self-discipline begins with proper tongue control and wisdom in eating. Students must become controllers and not slaves of their tongue.

Let schools be model community for helpful living. Get rid of junk items beautifully packed and advertised as “food”. Teach the students how to discriminate between real nutritious food and garbage. Offer them wholesome and delicious alternatives. This is not issue of taste, but of actual survival. Of we impart such benefits to students, they will be properly guided the rest of their lives.
Let the food revolution begins somewhere. The school is the ideal battleground for bad habit to be slain. Let the school nourish the body, mind and heart of our students. This is practical education in the basic of healthy living.
