Ducane Gas Barbecues Original and New BBQ Grill Parts.
Ever since the primitive ages fire has always been a part of the lifestyle of mankind. When it was discovered that fire could be controlled various inventions were made to suit the needs and desire of what people needed. Many families started to relish the outdoor experience of being able to cook over an open fire. It was only around the 1940s that outdoor cooking was seen a lot when families or groups of people decided to get together to throw a picnic, go camping or have a bonfire by the beach.
When the Second World War ended many families started to invest in houses that had a large open space that they could invite a few people over and do some cooking outside. Back then, this was the definition of what a house was and many middle class people scrambled to purchase high-quality houses with large spaces. The backyard grilling trend took root around 1950.

The unsophisticated instruments used to grill back then would have continued if George Stephen -- a Chicago resident at the time -- did not decide to put a stop to odd and troublesome grill design. Stephen at the time was a metalworker and loved to meddle with just about anything that he could get his hands on. Finally his great breakthrough occurred when he was given full rights to Weber Bros. Metal Spinning Co through an inheritance. The company was responsible for making harbor buoys and Stephen with tact and determination decided to change the way in which the buoys were manufactured. The day he cut a buoy along its laterals, placed a grate inside and added vents to control the temperature was the day that barbecuing changed and mankind entered the modern era of barbecuing.
Once the zeal of backyard cooking got into swing many manufacturers began to create and adapt various types of grills to gain a competitive edge in a market that was brimming with demand. It was about 1960 that gas grills came into existence to take the place of the traditional charcoal grill. Nowadays what was just a simple buoy has been transformed into outdoor grill islands, gas smokers and very technologically savvy grilling machines unfathomable fifty years ago.
When shopping for a new barbecue grill, a Ducane grill was definitely one of the best choices. The company was launched in 1946 as Ducane Brothers Metal Fabricating. About three decades later, the company began manufacturing gas grills. Over the years, Ducane has represented the cutting edge of barbecue grills. That has included hallmarks such as the durability and reliability of their grills. When surveyed, three out of four Ducane grill customers say that their next barbecue grill would be a Ducane model! The Ducane motto was: “Buy Your Last Grill First!” a good indication of the quality and warranty of the Ducane family products. Before purchasing replacement parts, be aware of the models' differing features.

Stainless steel is an excellent material for the exterior of barbecue grills. Sometimes manufacturers use it exclusively for a grill's burners. Other times, the entire grill is encased in stainless steel. Stainless steel helps to prevent rusting, staining, and corrosion. But as a word of caution, keep in mind that not all stainless steels are alike! Countries such as China tend to use inferior quality materials in order to reduce a product's shipping costs. Choosing a low-grade stainless steel could be as problematic as choosing an inferior type of material. So keep in mind that low-grade stainless steel parts will make the grill less durable – less durable than porcelain coated steel.
Ducane grills used good quality 304 stainless steel on many models of barbeque. Some Ducane grills were all stainless but most used a cast aluminum firebox and hood with stainless grates, burners and briquette tray. Aluminum is not pretty but will outlast even the best stainless steel outdoors. The aluminum Ducane BBQ grills had a stainless option for the column but not the caster-wheel base, which was a constant source of problems for those models.

A warming rack in a Ducane or any barbeque is a crucial feature if you're grilling for a small army, or have a gap between grilling and serving tasty foods. The warming rack is positioned perfectly so the food that you've already grilled will stay warm, but won't get overcooked. This is a must-have feature for anyone who does major grilling. While it's another part that you might need to replace, it's certainly a worthwhile component.
The cooking grate was another key replacement grill part of Ducane grills. Cooking grids were flat and wider than most grill grates and convex; the flat stainless bowed slightly up. The convex cooking grid allowed more heat to accumulate in the stainless grid and create a seared surface where the high-quality stainless conducted more heat that the air trapped inside the barbecuing hood.
This is an invaluable tool that lets you know the cooking temperature of your meats, without needing to open the grill's lid and then test the meat. Opening the grill hood can reduce the grill's heat retention, ultimately increase your cooking time and dry moisture from grilled foods. But by using a lid thermometer, you can constantly keep an eye on the meat's cooking temperature. While you may need to replace the thermometer, it's still a useful add-on.

Ducane used a double-layered stainless steel briquette tray. The double layered stainless briquette trays were designed with off-set columns running front to back supporting briquettes and moving heat through the box for an even distribution. Heat moving through the off-set stainless coupled with the radiant heat of the briquettes allowed a grilling surface in a Ducane that helped the models stand above many typical barbecues of their time.
Ducane family barbeque grills were on e of the first to implement a gas fueled rotisserie back-burner. The rotisserie burners created a blue-flame burning below several stainless louvers that directed the heat towards the spit rod. Today many barbecues use an infrared back-burner but for its time the Ducane design was ground-breaking. The rotisserie is perfect for roasting a variety of small game birds. In fact, roasting is easily one of the healthiest ways to prepare meats. The rotation of the meat ensures that it's cooked evenly. Meanwhile, the suspended rotisserie mechanism allows for excess fat to drip from the meat. Sauces and herbs will perfect your roasted meats. While most people use rotisserie to cook chickens, you can also cook a wide variety of small game birds, such as duck.
For over 30 years, Ducane was perfecting their line of barbeque grills. The Ducane family manufactured for many companies including air-conditioning brands and heaters and was one of the few true American manufacturing companies. As such today’s tendency to buy materials and ship processes to Mexico or China to save money has lowered the quality while increasing profits of several otherwise legendary brands. Ducane was not one of these and went out of business several years ago.

Weber recently bought the Ducane brands and factories in Georgia. The factories closed and the Ducane barbeque grills of the past few years are oriental imports. The legendary Ducane quality has been drastically changed. Multitudinous warranty issues have crippled the amount of models and in 2010 only two Ducane models are still available. Neither the Ducane Affinity 3100 or Affinity 4100 use stainless steel grill parts. Porcelain coated steel and heavy plastic are used for making the body, cart, doors and shelves. A very inexpensive stainless pipe burner fits both Ducane barbecues: three of the Ducane Affinity 3100 and for burners in the Affinity 4100. Because Weber is bringing these barbecues into America and selling them, the Weber warranty and legendary customer service does apply. That one benefit makes the Ducane barbeques worth more than any of the other low-end imports on the market today.
In closing, if you have an original Ducane, a “Buy Your Last Grill First” Ducane gas grill, take care of it. For the price of a Ducane that high standard of quality will not be available again. Today’s Ducane BBQ’s are inexpensive and built to be worth the lowered price. Ducane gas grill replacement parts are available for the older models. I highly suggest investing in good replacement parts and taking good care of your old grill. Anything available in today’s barbecue and grill models will cost over a thousand dollars for the type of materials, workmanship and quality of a ten-years old Ducane.
