Fast Food Review: The Soft Serve Fruit Co.

Most frozen treats are a guilty pleasure, but the Soft Serve Fruit Company can serve you up a cool, tasty dessert that satisfies your palate without packing on the pounds. First, a clarification, it looks like soft serve ice cream or yogurt but actually what comes from the machine is soft-serve frozen fruit. The company boasts that it only contains three ingredients: real fruit, filtered water, and organic cane sugar. If you're allergic to dairy, your day for frozen treats has come.

Now what about the taste. Well, I tried their banana soft serve and I'm amazed how much it tastes like a real banana and felt smooth and creamy. It's not flavored banana. It's not sugary sweet but it tasted naturally sweet. I had the small size which looks like it's equivalent to a scoop and a half, and contains only 90 calories. I didn't feel thirsty after eating it, which is how I often feel after eating ice-cream; in fact it was refreshing. It's fat-free of course because it's all fruit. Now the store has only four flavors at any given time.

The stores rotate the flavors and mix it up with seasonal flavors. The upper east side store that I went to had banana, strawberry, mango, with the seasonal flavor being pumpkin. Now, they may have only four flavors at any given time but they have over 24 toppings ranging from various fruits to pretzels; you can customize your soft serve frozen fruit any way you like. Of course the more add-ons to your frozen treat, the pricier it gets, the more calories you have. I would look at this dessert as a gourment treat. This store has three sizes (small - medium -large); small cup of soft serve fozen fruit is priced at $3.50 and large priced at $5.

The store also offers four different types of smoothies and four different sundae combinations. If you feel like taking some frozen fruit home, there are pre-packed pints of frozen fruit for $7 while the quart is priced at $11. Currently the store only has three locations nationwide with two stores in Manhattan and the third being out in the Hamptons which was recently launched this past Memorial Day and has a seasonal schedule.

I love this idea. I don't eat ice cream but I do eat frozen yogurt and make my own fruit blends. Do they tell you in the store how much sugar is added to each treat? I wonder because frut on its own can often have a ton of sugar. Voting up!

Hi MikeNV, sugars are approximately 19 grams. Each store posts nutritional information and it's also on their website.
