Gluten Free Kids Lunch Ideas

Here are some ideas for lunches for kids on a gluten free diet.

Sending your gluten free kids to public schools and social events can be challenging, not only because you have to think about preparing tasty gluten free lunch, but also because there is too much emphasis on treats for kids all around.

Protein should always be part of kids lunches. Protein will keep them full and will give them energy throughout the day.

Plan their gluten free meals for the week, grill extra chicken breasts or beef patties.
Here are some favorite foods for kids, they are gluten free and good sources of protein.

These gluten free lunch ideas require little preparation in the morning.

  • Boiled or scrambled eggs you can prepare in the morning
  • Beans, if kids like them warm, heat the beans up in the morning and put them in a small thermos
  • Grilled chicken or ground meat patty cut in slices
  • Cheese sticks (for kids that are not dairy free also)
  • Baked beans and cheese, Whole Foods sells very good organic baked beans in a can. Again you can heat up in the morning and have your child sprinkle some cheddar cheese on top (My kids love this meal)
  • Smoked salmon. Go for wild caught salmon, farmed ones are fed with grains.
  • Almond butter on their favorite gluten free bread or crackers, or almond butter and jelly.
  • Left overs like chicken soup or stews, kept warm in a thermos.
  • Protein Bar
  • Add a healthy drink like 100% fruit juice or a healthy smoothie.
  • Gluten free banana blueberry muffins

You can make your own healthy smoothie with almond, soy or regular milk or yogurt and frozen berries

Gluten free lunches for kids should be nutrient and protein dense.

Cherry tomatoes, cucumber slices, carrot sticks are vegetables that most kids like and are easy to pack for their lunch. Add strawberries, blueberries, grapes watermelon or cantaloupe slices or a trail mix with raisins.

You can make your own trail mix - combine 1 cup gluten-free cereal with 1/4 cup chopped walnuts and 1/4 cup dried cranberries or raisins for a healthy trail mix.
