Ingredients for Fresh Rosemary Ginger Iced Tea

  • 1 large (or 2 small) Lemon, Thoroughly washed
  • 1-1/2 inch (about 3.75cm) Ginger, Fresh cut only
  • 9 teaspoons (about 45ml) Honey, Clover or ginger honey taste best in this recipe
  • 1 large sprig Rosemary, As fresh as you can find it
  • 3 cups (about 708ml) Boiling water, Heated on a kettle or pan, not in the microwave
  • 2 medium (and 1 more for garnish) Basil leaves, Fresh, bruise the 2 leaves and finley ribbon cut the 1

Instructions for Making Fresh Rosemary Ginger Tea

  1. Put the water in a kettle and bring to a boil (or microwave heat water to a boil).
  2. Cut the lemon in half, squeeze the juice from half of the lemon into a mug, keeping seeds out of the juice. Slice the other half in even wheels. Set aside.
  3. Gently peal and very thinly slice the fresh ginger. Set aside.
  4. Slightly bruise the rosemary sprig and 2 basil leaves by rolling them between your palms. Roll up 1 basil leaf and cross-cut it in really thin ribbon slices, set aside.
  5. In a heat resistant glass pitcher place the lemon slices at the bottom. Then add the lemon juice, ginger slices, bruised basil and rosemary sprig. Once these are all in the pitcher, drizzle in the honey.
  6. Once the water has come to a full boil, pour it into the pitcher over the tea ingredients. Cover the pitcher with the lid, saucer, or whatever will sit safely on the brim. Allow to steep for 5 minutes (or longer depending on how strong you like your tea).
  7. In two glasses, add ice cubes. Pour the steeped tea over the ice. Sprinkle the ribbon cut basil leaves on top, garnish, and serve.

Antioxidants and Rosemary - Who knew? This lovely herb ranks right up there with the best of them when we start counting antioxidant worthiness. Great for clearing away those nasty free radicals that damage our bodies. But, it also helps keep our memory sharp and aware. Some studies compare rosemary with Alzheimer's disease medications in just how well it helps with memory health.

Vitamins and Rosemary - A number of great vitamins and minerals like vitamin A, C, and minerals potassium, calcium and iron, can all be found in the herb rosemary. However, those B-complex vitamins—folic acid, riboflavin, pyridoxine, and pantothenic acid—are most abundant in this lovely herb.

Folates and Rosemary - This herb offers a very high amount of folates. Folates are very crucial in DNA synthesis. One study conducted in the Netherlands showed an increase in both placental and birth weight when diets were supplemented with folates.

Migraines and Rosemary - In South Africa they use rosemary in conjunction with a doctors recommendations to aide in relieving migraines. They claim that the rosemary helps to reduce the pain of other headaches as well, and also will stimulate the mind. (I could find no clinical proof that this actually works.)

What You Think Really Does Matter

Are you willing to switch from boxed and bagged herbs for tea, to fresh healthy tea ingredients?

  • No way. Those bags of tea are too convenient ot stop using.
  • Maybe, when I have an extra two or three minutes to make tea.
  • Yes, absolutely! I had no idea how healthy fresh ingredients are!

Rosemary Essential Oil - In its essential oil form, the herb is used frequently in aroma therapy to help with sore or stiff muscles, rheumatism, and can even ease the pain of arthritis. It is said to lower high blood sugar by triggering the liver and gall bladder to be more active. When put on the skin it reduces puffiness, and when massaged into the scalp it increases hair growth and reduces scalp disorders. Taking rosemary in its essential oil form internally is not a good idea at all. It is a really strong element that if used incorrectly can turn a really good thing, into a very bad trip to the hospital.

Before using any herb or essential oil for medical applications (internal or otherwise), you should first check with a legitimate medical source, like your family doctor.

Warning Regarding Rosemary "Essential Oil"

In its essential oil form (highly concentrated and very strong) rosemary can bring a seriously stimulating result, so those who have epilepsy or high blood pressure may want to avoid using it in its essential oil form.

The essential oil version of this herb should also be avoided during pregnancy.

Jack Daniels is the Answer You Seek

The best way to respectfully take this iced tea into the world of cocktails, is to simply splash in a touch of Jack Daniels Black Label, you know, old No. 7. Although, for my personal taste, it can only be Gentleman's Jack, which has a very smooth finish. This Tennessee bourbon (Jack would hate that I called it bourbon) gets charcoal filtered twice, unlike any other whiskey in the world! It does not take much of this perfect liquid gold to overwhelm the flavors in the tea. Even a small 1/2 ounce splash (for the entire batch) will bring out the earthy tones of the rosemary and ginger, leaving these herbs to accent the smokey richness found in the whiskey. If it is the relaxing overall feeling of a cocktail you seek, don't worry, the combination of tea and Jack Daniels won't disappoint you. It is a one of a kind match made in...well... Tennessee.

Serving Your Fresh Rosemary Ginger Tea

I place a fresh sprig of rosemary as a garnish for a couple of reasons:

  1. The fresh rosemary is very aromatic and it adds a pleasing scent as the tea is sipped.
  2. The fresh garnish just looks better and it lets the consumer know what is in the beverage.

Bottoms up! (It is bathing suite season after all!)

Happyboomernurse~ I was surprised to find--through the research--that rosemary could be harmful in particular situations, I would have never thought it to be so.

I am glad you like the pictures, it was fun snapping them. This is one of my favorite summer iced drinks, but it is pretty darn good as a cocktail after 5. (It's always after 5 somewhere!) Thanks for making it by today, I am honored that you shared your thoughts.
