Blueberry, Tart Cherry Juice and Matcha Smoothie

How would you like to meet your antioxidant ORAC recommendations, get your daily vitamin & mineral needs, have a caffeine boost, improve mental alertness, get a dose of melatonin, and please your taste buds in one smoothie? This very healthy smoothie tastes great and is perfect for busy day.

Healthy Smoothie Recipe

  • 1 cup fresh blueberries (frozen are great too - I actually prefer them frozen for smoothies)
  • 1 cup mixed berries (raspberries, strawberries, OR make it another cup of blueberries)
  • 2 tsp Matcha powder (if caffeine makes you jittery, or you already had your coffee, you may want to reduce this to 1 tsp)
  • 1 packet of Emergen-C Heart Health ( I use Black Cherry, or any of the berry flavors)
  • 1 cup Tart Cherry Juice (reduce to half a cup if you are monitoring sugar and/or calorie intake)
  • 1 cup ice
  • NOTE! if you need additional fiber you can add 1 tsp of Metamucil, or a brand of your choice - I use Metamucil orange flavor. You won't even know it is there - well, maybe later you will ;)
  • If you'd like this to be a bit sweeter you can add one packet of Splenda, or 1 tsp of agave or honey

Place all the berries in the blender first and then layer the juice and ice on top of the berries. The powdered matcha, Emergen-C and fiber are last. (why? if you put the powdered products in first they stick to the bottom of the blender and do not mix well.)

Blend well and pour into your favorite glass, or on the go mug. Enjoy your very healthy smoothie!

A note about the matcha - it has caffeine! I strongly suggest you only add the matcha if it is early in the day. This smoothie recipe is best for morning consumption.

Diabetics beware! Despite all its goodness, this smoothie is a bit high in sugar. Read your labels and monitor your glucose. Check the sugar carb count on your particular brand of blueberries and tart cherry juice.

What is in it

  • A powerful punch of antioxidants - cancer and disease fighters!
  • Melatonin - balances your body clock by assisting your waking and sleeping pattern. If you suffer from insomnia then melatonin is a must for your diet. Melatonin is a natural ingredient in tart cherry juice - read more.
  • Vitamin C - helps improve your immune system and promotes healthy skin
  • Various vitamins and minerals - improve ocular health, mental alertness and more.

A very useful recipe! It's very similar to a smoothie I learned how to make on Good Eats. That one used blueberries, peaches, strawberries, acai juice, bananas and soy milk. It tastes amazing; I'd have it every day if I didn't have to keep washing the blender. ;p

Hi missolive. This sounds like a great recipe - my son has been telling me about the benefits of matcha, he thinks it will relieve my tiredness, and I remembered seeing some of your hubs on the subject. Do you recommend any particular brand?

I use maeden - it is pictured just under the smoothie image. I find it at my local Japanese market. Some health food stores carry it as well. Great stuff. Consider my Benefits of Matcha for greater detail.

All I can say is YUM! I have a bunch of matcha powder that I haven't used yet, this looks fantastic, I'll have to try this. Now all I need to do is see if there are any frozen berries left! (I guess I DID have more to say than just "yum")

We're seeing some great smoothie recipes to help us begin the New Year right, but I love your recipe that includes EmergenC. The tart cherry juice might be a bit much for me, but I could open my tart cherry capsule and add that with the powders, probably adding more fruit or a cup of another healthy juice.

Would like to link this hub to mine on tart cherry if you have no objection--thanks! Voted up.

RTalloni - I would be nothing less than honored to have you link your hub to mine. I have already linked your tart cherry juice hub to mine. Smoothie variations are fun, easy and tasty. I'm sure you will find just the right combination. Thank you for the votes! :)

Rajan - thank you my friend. I am a big fan of your healthy hubs and I am honored you have enjoyed this.

Veronica - I am really glad you liked it. Thanks for the great compliment!

Malchiah - I think you will enjoy this smoothie. I do like my smoothies a bit thicker though - almost a sorbet yum!

Melbel - YUMMY! I always try to keep matcha available and I try to have at least 1/2 tsp everyday. Smoothies are a great way to blend in its goodness. I like to make them for my trips to school and sip on it during the morning. I have one of those neat to go cups with the ice tube in the middle - works great! Thank you for sharing my hub!

tarajeyaram - matcha is so good for us - how can we not get addicted? :)

RealHousewife - give it a try Kelly! I think you just might like it. Tart cherry juice is good for us too! You and I both need to get our sleep patterns back in sync after our holiday FB chats! Love ya! :)

SanneL - I love your tea recipes!!! Thank you for stopping by.

riaha - thank you for reading and commenting - I hope you like the recipe! :)

I saw Matcha powder for the first time in our local "around the world" market. I'm sure it's been there all along but it's lost among hundreds of other teas. I'm now wishing I had just picked it up while I saw it so that I could try out this recipe:) Ahh, but at least I have another excuse to go back and browse the vast tea aisle again - LOL:)

Before I saw your smoothie hubs, I have never even heard of matcha before.. I am definitely intrigued. I have however heard of tart cherry juice. I have heard (but not really did much research on it that I can honestly quote and remember) that it is really good for your joints. Blueberries have also been known for their effects on weight loss. Definitely a keeper! I think your smoothie recipes are going to make my grocery shopping list pretty long! :)

barbergirl28 - Hi Stacy, I'm a big fan of all the ingredients in this smoothie and I have researched each of them. Of course by now you know I am head over heels with the benefits of matcha. And you are correct, tart cherry juice is good for joints - muscle too! Tart cherry juice is very high in antioxidants. Glad you liked this recipe and I look forward to hearing how everything turns out.

tammyswallow - mmmmmmm a green tea smoothie sounds delicious! Yum! Thanks for reading. I hope you like this healthy variation. If you like blueberries I'm sure you'll love the taste of this one. :)

THEHuG5 - hi there! If you can't find the matcha in the regular grocery store you may want to try your local health food store or Asian market. Healthy stuff. I wrote a hub on matcha if you'd like to research more on it. Glad you came by - thanks!

adriankhy90 - Thank you! hahah :)

glinnmgraw - I'm glad to hear it! hahah to you too! :)
