Italy's First Pizza

Naples was the area where Pizza as we know it first made its appearance. Because it was inexpensive to make and filling when eaten it was considered a peasant's meal for centuries. Pizza was sold by vendors in the streets and it was cut into slices depending on how much pizza one could afford.

Tomatoes were brought to Europe by Americans in the 16th Century. They were thought to be poisonous, as are other fruits of the nightshade family, so were unacceptable for consumption by most. By the 18th Century the poor and hungry peasants found them to be a tasty addition to their yeast based flat bread.

Raffaele Esposito established a restaurant called Pizzeria de Pietro in 1880. It is told that in order to honor King Umberto I and Queen Margherita when they were on Holiday in Naples he made them a special Pizza using Mozzarella (white), Tomatoes (red) and Basil (green) to represent the colors of the flag. Queen Margherita was so pleased with the Pizza that she wrote a Thank You note to Raffaele. He promptly named the Pizza after her. "Margherita Pizza" set the standard for modern pizza and it firmly established Naples as the Pizza capital of the world! Pizzeria de Pietro became Pizzeria Brandi and is still in operation today.
