Amish Friendship Bread is delicious, you do need friends to give some of the starter. It will need a little attention by using it and giving the starter away! The baked bread makes lovely gifts. You might put some pounds on because it is yummy. Hope you enjoy the bread and makes some new friends.

Bread Starter

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup milk

Instructions

  • Use gallon Ziploc bags.
  • Do not use a metal spoon or bowl.
  • Do not refrigerate starter but you can freeze it.
  1. Day 1: Do nothing.
  2. Day 2, 3, 4, 5: Mush bag to mix it.
  3. Day 6: Add one cup flour, one cup sugar and one cup milk. Mush bag to mix.
  4. Day 7, 8, 9: Mush bag. Release air from bag twice daily.
  5. Day 10: Add one cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk. Mush bag to mix.
  • Pour three one cup starters into three Ziploc bags. Keep one for yourself and give two to friends with instructions.
  • Use the remaining batter to make bread.

Basic Amish Friendship Bread

Add:

  • 1 cup oil
  • ½ cup milk
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

In a separate bowl mix:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup chopped nuts
  • 1-5.1 ounce box vanilla instant pudding

Instructions

  1. Mix dry ingredients with liquid ingredients.
  2. Pour into two large or four small loaf pans.
  3. Spray baking pans with cooking spray.
  4. Sprinkle bottom of pan with cinnamon sugar; also sprinkle a little cinnamon sugar mixture on top of loaf before baking.
  5. Bake in preheat 325 degrees Fahrenheit oven for 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Variations for Friendship Bread

  1. Start with basic recipe each time.
  2. Bake for 45 to 1 hour until toothpick come out clean.

Banana Nut

Omit:

  • cinnamon

Reduce:

  • oil to 1/3 cup

Add:

  • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 bananas, ripe, mashed
  • ½ cup nuts, chopped

Chocolate Chip

Omit:

  • cinnamon

Add:

  • 1-5.1 ounce box of instant chocolate pudding
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 teaspoons cocoa
  • 3/4 cup chocolate chips

Apple Cinnamon

Add:

  • 1 cup of raisins
  • 1 medium apple, diced

Butterscotch

Omit:

  • Cinnamon

Add:

  • 1-5.1 ounce box of butterscotch pudding
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup of butterscotch chips.

Mounds Bar

  • cinnamon

Add:

  • 1-5.1 ounce box of chocolate instant pudding
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3/4 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup coconut

Lemon

Omit:

  • cinnamon, nuts and vanilla extract

Add:

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1-5.1 ounce box of lemon pudding
  • 1 cup milk

Strawberry Cheesecake Friendship Bread

Pumpkin

Pumpkin

Reduce:

  • oil to 1/3 cup.
  • cinnamon to 1 teaspoon

Omit:

  • white sugar

Add:

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 cup pumpkin purée

Cranberry Orange

Omit:

  • Milk

Add:

  • ½ cup orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange zest
  • 1 cup dried cranberries

Carrot

Carrot

  • Increase the cinnamon to 1 tablespoon.

Add:

  • 3 medium carrots, shredded
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup chunky applesauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon clove
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Bake in a bundt pan until toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Delicious with cream cheese frosting.
