Hot Fudge Sundae Cake: Sweet, Swift, and Satisfying

Looking for something decedent, savory, and easy to make? How about something to warm you during those nights when it's cold outside? Great for cooks and foodies of all persuasions, Hot Fudge Sundae cake is a quick, convenient recipe that only requires sugar, a crock-pot, and a love of chocolate! Plus, you can mix and bake in the same pan, so there's less to clean-up.

The Classic Cake

INGREDIENTS

1 cup all-purpose flour

3/4 cup granulated sugar

2 tablespoons baking cocoa

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup milk

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 cup chopped nuts, if desired

1 cup packed brown sugar

1/4 cup baking cocoa

1 3/4 cups very hot water

Ice cream, if desired

  • If using self-rising flour, there is no need to add baking powder and salt.

DIRECTIONS

  • 1. Heat oven to 350ºF.
  • 2. Mix flour, granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons cocoa, the baking powder and salt in ungreased square pan, 9x9x2 inches. Mix in milk, oil and vanilla with fork until smooth. Stir in nuts. Spread in pan.
  • 3. Sprinkle brown sugar and 1/4 cup cocoa over batter. Pour water over batter.
  • 4. Bake about 40 minutes or until top is dry.
  • 5. Spoon warm cake into dessert dishes. Top with ice cream. Spoon sauce from pan onto each serving.

Student Sundae Cake (In a Crock-Pot!)

3½ hours 20 min prep (so, great to cook while you're working on the rest of dinner)

INGREDIENTS

1 cup plain flour

1/2 cup sugar

2 tablespoons cocoa

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup milk

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/2 cup chopped nuts

3/4 cup packed brown sugar

1/4 cup baking cocoa

1 1/2 cups hot water

Cooking spray

INSTRUCTIONS

Spray inside of 2- 3 1/2 quart crock with cooking spray.

Mix flour, sugar, 2 TBS cocoa, baking powder and salt in medium bowl.

Stir in milk, oil and vanilla until smooth.

Stir in nuts.

Spread batter evenly in slow cooker.

Mix brown sugar and 1/4 cup cocoa in small bowl.

Stir in hot water until smooth.

Pour evenly over batter in crock.

Cover and cook on high 2- 2 1/2 hours or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Turn off crock.

Let cake stand uncovered 30- 40 minutes to cool slightly before serving.

Spoon warm cake into dessert dishes.

Now for Something Completely Different (or slightly)

* Hot Fudge Marshmallow Sundae Cake: Omit nuts; add 1 cup miniature marshmallows.

* Hot Fudge Coconut Sundae Cake: Omit nuts; add 1/2 cup coconut and 1/2 cup chopped almonds.

* Hot Fudge Butterscotch Sundae Cake: Omit nuts; add 1 cup butterscotch pieces. Decrease brown sugar to 1/2 cup and the 1/4 cup cocoa to 2 tablespoons.

* Hot Fudge Peanutty Sundae Cake: Omit nuts; stir in 1/2 cup peanut butter and 1/2 cup chopped peanuts.

** If you're worried about this cake being too sweet, try this: After topping your cake with some ice cream, pour a shot of Bailey's on top of the ice cream, let it soak in, and enjoy! **
