How To Make a Perfect Funnel Cake; Like The Ones At The County Fair, With Step By Step Instructions And Photos

Make Perfect Funnel Cakes

This is a how-to on making perfect funnel cakes. They taste great and remind you of the kind you could ony buy at the County Fair.

Cook Time

Prep time: 10 min
Cook time: 10 min
Ready in: 20 min
Yields: about 10 funnel cakes

Recipe for Funnel Cake

Beat 1 Egg with 1 Cup of Milk till frothy

In a separate bowl: Mix together 1 Cup Flour, 3/4 Teaspoons Salt, 2 Tablespoons Granulated Sugar, and 3/4 Teaspoons Baking Powder.

Slowly add the egg and milk mixture to the dry ingredients.

Beat well. Now you're ready to make the funnel cakes!

Egg and Milk Mixed

Dry Ingredients Mixed Together

Heating the Oil

Use a candy thermometer to heat the oil to 350 degrees. If it's any hotter, the batter will burn. (I found this out the hard way). If you have a deep fryer, I think that would be better than a skillet like I used.

Checking The Temperature of the Oil

Confectioner's Sugar and Funnel Used

Have Your Funnel Ready to Pour the Batter

As soon as the oil reaches 350 degrees, pour about 1/2 Cup of the batter into a small funnel, holding your finger over the opening. The opening of the funnel should not be larger than 1/4 inch. If you don't have a small funnel, you can pour the batter into a large plastic zippered bag with a small hole cut out of one corner.

Hold the funnel over the hot oil and pour the batter into the oil using a back and forth motion. Try to make a lacy pattern. You'll get the hang of it after a couple of attempts. My first ones came together, and looked like a pancake. It takes a little practice!

Pouring batter into Oil

After the funnel cake has browned on one side, gently flip it over and brown on the other side.

Remove the Funnel Cake

After the cake has browned on the other side, gently remove it and place on the paper towel. I find a large spatula is good for this. I tried using tongs, but the cake fell apart. So, now I gently slide the spatula under the cake and remove it.

Sprinle Confectioner's Sugar over the top, and EAT!

These are really better served while they are nice and warm, I think.

Yes, that "fish cake" was a real work of art! Mary

Mary, I'm sure people are bored with me rattling on about Florida (my favourite place in the world apart from my house!) but one of my favourite memories of Disneyworld last time was eating a huge funnel cake between the 3 of us walking through the Animal Kingdom on a hot, sunny day - heaven. I wish I had a deep fat fryer to try these...I could always go back to Florida of course :o)

Hi, Jools99. Hope you will return to the great state of Florida. I just got back from Disney with 3 of my grandchildren. We had a blast! Guess what we ate??? Funnel Cakes!!!

Don't wait till you get a deep fat fryer to make these. Use any skillet that will hold enough oil to cook them in.

You could ask Santa for a deep fat fryer, you know?

Thanks for the visit and the commment.

Mmmmmmary615! Looks so good and easy! Not sure if I'll make some, but next time you do, let me know! (I'll invite myself over.) When I buy them at fairs it looks easy there, too. Wonder if a wok would work--or would it be too deep?

mary615 profile image

mary615 3 years ago from Florida Author

Good Morning, ajwrites57. This really are easy to make. My family lines up to eat these as soon as they are fried! I don't think a wok would be too deep to fry these. They fry better in a lot of HOT oil.

I hope you will make some of these, and let me know how they turn out, OK?

Thanks for reading and commenting, Mary

Do you know I have never seen or eaten a funnel cake? Yes, I have heard all the raves about them from people who got them at the fair, but I am not a fair going person. If I were I would probably have tried them by now.

I think your recipe sounds delicious, and from someone who likes quick and easy when it comes to the kitchen, your recipe also sounds very doable. I think funnel cake lovers should find this recipe very exciting because they won't have to wait for the next fair to have them and they won't have to pay the outrageous price I've heard they pay to get them.

This seems like a wonderful recipe all around. I've given you another 5 stars and I'm going to share it with my followers in case there are funnel cake lovers among them. I love finding recipes for favorite foods that cost so much when purchased in a restaurant or at a special event, or that are not necessarily available when I want them and I think a lot of people would really love this recipe for that reason. Also voted up and awesome!

Hi, Au fait Oh, you are in for a treat if you've never eaten a funnel cake! It does take a little practice to get the batter just right in the hot oil, but after the first one you'll be hooked!

Thanks so much for sharing and for the votes, Mary
