Homemade Yogurt

Homemade yogurt is delicious, easy to make, delicious, and cost a lot less than store bought yogurt. Yogurt with fruit satisfies. For a healthy snack, yogurt is the perfect food.

Frozen yogurt is a low calorie dessert. One cup of yogurt made from skim milk has about 127 calories; fruit will add another 80 calories.

I think the secret ingredient of homemade yogurt is honey. Using honey instead of sugar adds an enjoyable, sweet flavor to the yogurt. You only need 2-4 tablespoons of honey for a 5 cup batch.

I have included a variety of yogurt makers and supplies to the right and below. You can start with a small yogurt maker if making yogurt for a small family or a larger yogurt maker for larger families and gatherings.

Yogurt Recipe

Yogurt is easy to make. Here is a simple recipe to make 5 cups of yogurt:

  • 1 quart milk (You can use whole or low-fat milk.)

  • 1/3 cup nonfat dry milk powder

  • ¼ cup unflavored, cultured yogurt

  • 2-4 tablespoons of honey

  • ½ teaspoon unflavored gelatin

The cultured yogurt is available in supermarkets. Regular, unflavored yogurt is really a live culture you will need as your starter.

Follow the directions of your yogurt maker for a thick, delicious yogurt. Remove the gelatin if a thinner yogurt is desired.

Making yogurt is that simple and costs next to nothing to make once the initial cost of a yogurt maker is out of the way.
