Chinese Five Spice Powder Recipe

Chinese Five Spice is a spice blend that is a bit on the licorice-tasting side. It complements both sweet and savory foods, and can easily fit with Asian dishes as well as Latin dishes with its unique blend.

It is used in both hot and spicy dishes like stir fries, and also cool, sweet desserts like ice cream. This spice blend can be found in just about any market in the spice aisle, and depending on the brand, can be a mixture of any number of ingredients such as fennel seed, cinnamon, pepper, and cloves.

Here a couple of recipes to try. The first is more sweet and the second is more spicy. Change any of the ingredients to suit your tastes.

Chinese Five Spice I

  • 4 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 4 whole star anise, crushed to a powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons black pepper, finely ground

Mix all the spices together, and use in recipes. This will keep for about 6 weeks in a tightly capped spice jar.
