Insider's Guide to Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk Restaurants

The Culinary Coast

The Southern Coast of Delaware is a slice of culinary heaven and offers a variety of outstanding cuisine. You can learn more about the restaurants throughout the area by visiting the Culinary Coast Website at: www.visitsoutherndelaware.com/culinarycoast .

Rehoboth Beach is part of the Culinary Coast, a stretch of Delaware beach towns that offer some of the best dining experiences in the Mid Atlantic Coastal Region, and, some might argue, in the world.

I've lived near Rehoboth for more than a decade and my husband and I dine out in this popular seaside town every week. Whether you're looking for pizza, take-out burgers, a casual dining experience, or a delicious meal served in an elegant restaurant, you can enjoy great beach views at the places I'll be sharing with you in this article.

In future hubs, I'll share some unique eating places that are tucked into the side streets of this family friendly resort, but for now, sit back and enjoy the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the boardwalk as I take you on a cyber tour of some of my favorite places.

Victoria's Restaurant: Elegant Dining by the Sea

Victoria's Restaurant is part of the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel. This is a photo of the outdoor seating which is directly on the boardwalk. There is also a more formal dining room inside and oceanfront bar & lounge.

Old World Charm at Victoria's Restaurant

Whether you eat inside at one of the tiered seating areas, or outside directly on the boardwalk, you will have stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean as you dine on mouth watering food served by attentive waitresses and waiters.

Victoria's Restaurant offers old world charm, and it's where my husband and I go to celebrate special occasions or dine out with visiting family or friends.

I prefer eating outside when the weather is warm. Wrought iron tables, arbors, and giant urns overflowing with colorful flowers make you feel like you are seated inside a picture perfect postcard. You might catch a glimpse of dolphins swimming in the sea, or a family sitting in an old-fashioned surrey with a fringe on top as they pedal along on the boardwalk.

On summer evenings, you can enjoy ocean breezes and live music while your meal is served and in winter, you can savor your meal sitting near the fireplace in the main dining room, listening to live piano music as you look at the sea through floor to ceiling windows.

Christmastime is particularly special at Victoria's but reservations are a must at that time of year.

Victoria's is famous for their delectable crab melt, which is my personal favorite. It consists of crab meat served in a puff pastry with melted cheese on top. Their quiche is also delicious.

If you're looking for a lighter meal, try eating there between the hours of 3 to 5pm when they offer a lite fair menu that's easier on your waistline as well as your wallet.

I give Victoria's a 5 star rating because it is a truly unique dining experience, has exceptional food and service, some of the best views on the boardwalk and an extensive menu. The food here is pricier than the other restaurants on the boardwalk, but in my opinion, the quality justifies the extra expense.

Please feel free to leave your own rating of Victoria's by clicking on the stars.

Casual Dining at Obie's By the Sea

Obie's has great tasting hamburgers, seafood or veggie wraps, soups and salads. It is my husband's favorite restaurant when he's in the mood for casual dining on lite fare. He usually orders fish and chips, sometimes substituting a fresh salad for the chips. My favorite menu item is their veggie wrap which is teaming with grilled veggies and served with your choice of chips or salad. The Maryland Style Clam Chowder is also excellent.

Aside from the excellent food, the best thing about Obie's is that you can go directly from the beach to an outside or inside table as long as you throw on a T-shirt or cover-up and have flip-flops or sandals covering your feet. Also, even the indoor seating feels like you're sitting outside as the dining room has 2 open sides that let you enjoy ocean breezes.

For those wanting to cool off with alcoholic beverages there are two full service bars, one outside and the other inside and their happy hour specials are very popular.

Obie's closes in late fall and re-opens in late spring.

Atlantic Sands Restaurant

The Atlantic Sands is open year round and along with Victoria's Restaurant, is one of the few places in Rehoboth Beach that serves patrons on holidays, including Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

It offers indoor dining with fabulous views of the boardwalk, quiet, instrumental music, and a variety of seafood and other menu items. Their buffets are excellent and include seafood and other selections which vary by the season .

My favorite regular menu item is their prime rib dinner which is tender, juicy and served as rare or well done as you want it.

Reservations are recommended during the busy summer months, on weekends and during holidays.

Grotto Pizza Restaurant

The first Grotto's opened in 1960. Grotto's is famous for their pizza and other Italian food. They have 3 locations in Rehoboth Beach. This is the one which remains open year-round.

Grotto's Gelato

Grotto Pizza

Grotto's, is a Rehoboth Beach icon, popular with both tourists and locals. Operating for more than 50 years, Grotto's is famous for their pizza but they are a full service restaurant that offers a variety of Italian foods in addition to great soups and salads.

Grotto's has three locations in Rehoboth, two directly on the boardwalk, each of which has a full service bar with happy hour specials. The boardwalk locations close in late fall and reopen in the springtime, but the Rehoboth Avenue restaurant remains open year-round and is only 1 block in from the boardwalk.

The restaurant's specialty dessert is Gelato, which is available in a wide assortment of flavors.

Take-out selections of all menu items are popular, especially during the busy summer season.

Grotto's also has locations in Bethany Beach, Dewey Beach, Lewes, Long Neck, Seaford and Milford.

The Greene Turtle Offers a View From Above

The Greene Turtle as seen from beach.
The Greene Turtle as seen from beach. | Source

The Greene Turtle is open year round and in my opinion, the best seats in the house during the warmer seasons are the single row of tables that line the front and side of this 2nd floor restaurant.

The higher elevation is a fun place to "people watch" and offers fabulous views of the boardwalk as well as the beach and ocean.

This is a casual restaurant and sports bar offering a variety of wraps, salads, burgers, soups and appetizers. My favorite menu items is their crab cake sandwich and Maryland crab soup.

The floor to ceiling glass windows along 2 sides of the restaurant allows indoor diners to enjoy ocean views while watching their favorite games on large sports screens. However, indoor seating can be quite noisy, so this is not the place to go if you favor a quiet atmosphere conducive to good conversation.

Gus & Gus Place

Source

Gus & Gus Place

Operating since 1956, Gus & Gus Place is a very casual eatery that offers inexpensive hot breakfasts, lunches, and early dinners.

They're known for their delicious fried chicken, burgers and french fires plus you can order a variety of other items that can be eaten on premises or ordered for take-out (there are many nearby benches on the boardwalk or you can take it back to your hotel room or condo).

The restaurant has indoor booths, but seating is limited and the d├ęcor is dated with almost no views of the ocean. Still, the restaurant is very popular with locals and a lot of tourists have been returning to it for many years.

Hello Happyboomernurse. Tell the truth you have taken a job with the Chamber of Commerce haven't you? What a nice little area that you bring to us through this hub. It looks beautiful and peaceful - barring storms of course. This is such a nice glimpse of your Eastern seaboard in the fall.

Hi Mike,

Ah, you do make me laugh and smile! I only wish I were being paid by the Chamber of Commerce! LOL

I'm thrilled you enjoyed it, and yes this is a wonderful area to live except when Hurricanes like Irene and Sandy are breezing through. I was so relieved that aside from beach erosion and a lot of sand washing up on the boardwalk, there was no damage from either of those storms when they battered Rehoboth. I was also glad that most people evacuated when the Governor gave the order to do so.

Gail

Thanks so much for the lovely, specific feedback. Good to know that my love of Rehoboth Boardwalk and great food comes through in my writing. LOL

Just finished reading your latest hub, "Barrier Island- Love it or Leave it," and am amazed at your resilience and good humor throughout the devastation and ordeal of Hurricane Sandy.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and Lover Man as you continue to recover from that terrible storm.

Dear Gail,

Oh my, what a fabulous array of eateries reviewed with detail and charm.

While each restaurant looks absolutely fabulous, I am partial to Victoria's Restaurant for the ambiance and The Greene Turtle for the view.

Excellent job on this and look forward to your next installment.

Voted UP and UABI. Hugs, Maria

Ah Maria, you have excellent taste, pun intended.

I agree with your choices for the reasons you've mentioned.

The ambiance at Victoria's has old world charm, but the view from above at the Greene Turtle is fabulous.

Thanks so much for your specific feedback, ongoing support and friendship. Also the vote up, but most of all your hugs, which I'm sending right back to you!

There is something extra-romantic in having dinner in a restaurant with an ocean view. I will enjoy exactly this during the coming week in Durban, South Africa's 2nd largest city (forever competing with Cape Town.) I will be so thinking of you, Happyboomernurse, as I will, maybe, also use this new rating hubs capsules for my hubs about the restaurants and other tourist attractions in Durban. But let me rather not now think about hard work and rather congratulate you with this hubs of yours. You make it so real for the reader to enjoy; I can even taste those dishes you introduce with so much flair.

Voted up and brilliant - such a tease that will surely inspire readers to visit all Boardwalk Restaurants in Rehoboth Beach Delaware.

Hi Martie,

I'm so thrilled that you'll be experiencing your own dining with an ocean view when you vacation in Durban, South Africa next week.

You're right to just enjoy yourself without doing any writing that week. Just take a few photos and there'll still be time to write a great hub about the Durban restaurants and other attractions after you get back home. I will be eagerly looking forward to learning more about your country's beautiful beaches.

In the meantime, so glad you enjoyed reading about my corner of the world and I appreciate your specific review of this hub and the vote up.

Hi, This looks a fabulous place to go and eat, over here on the boardwalk or as we call it the pier, there are eating places such as restaurants and cafes but they are not as great as your choice, good luck with the contest, this is a fantastic one! Oh and I am so jealous too! lol!

Happyboomernurse profile image

Happyboomernurse 4 years ago from South Carolina Author

Hi Nell,

So thrilled that you enjoyed the hub and I thought it was interesting that you said a boardwalk would be called a pier, in England.

In America the difference between a pier and boardwalk is that a pier juts out over the ocean, while a boardwalk stays on shore and is parallel to the ocean.

Good luck to you, too. I loved your "Burgers of Marlow, Best Bakery in Town," review.

My husband's aunt used to live in Delaware, and I wish we'd known about this stretch of restaurants when we went to visit her! Victoria's sounds really nice with such delicious food and nice views. This is a great review! I really appreciate the directions to get there and the menu suggestions.

I've only just discovered this hub, and I love it, Happyboomernurse! Rehoboth Beach reminds me of a beach town near where I live. It sounds like it has a similar atmosphere. I love the description of Victoria's Restaurant. This sounds like a great place to visit in both summer and winter.

Hi Alicia,

I've never been to British Columbia but I've also never seen a beach town that I didn't like.

Victoria's is my favorite restaurant, especially for celebrating special occasions.

Rehoboth is a great place to visit anytime of year, though the winters are cold, although not as frigid as it gets in Canada.

Thanks so much for your feedback. It's greatly appreciated.

Great hub! We took our kids to Rehoboth Beach several years ago and are planning a trip back to see what has changed. I'm going to make a list of the eateries you describe and your favorite dishes there. Thanks for sharing!

Dearabbysmom,

So glad you found this hub helpful.

4 or 5 years ago, Rehoboth Blvd. (the road leading into the beach from Rt. 1) was redone. Parking and sidewalks were paved, a beautiful lighthouse circle was added and other improvements were made to the streetscape, giving the Blvd. a beautiful makeover.

In addition to the restaurants directly on the boardwalk, there are many other eateries scattered throughout the whole town.

Hope you do get a chance to visit soon.

Thanks for your heartfelt feedback.

Hugs,

Gail

Haven't had Grotto's Pizza in Rehoboth Beach but on Kirkwood Hwy. Love Delaware and the name "Rehoboth" - God made a place and room for us. So lovely. Nothing like the East Coast beaches.

This is an awesome hub. I love Rehoboth Beach, but I've only been there once. I usually go to Ocean City, MD instead since I live in Maryland, but honestly, I should go to Rehoboth since it is just as close. I love the Greene Turtle, too. I usually get the Maryland crab soup and fried pickles. I've been to 5 different locations and I even have two Greene Turtle t-shirts. :-) Voted up!

Hi Jeannie,

I live in Delaware so I generally go to the Lewes and Rehoboth Beaches but sometimes make the trip to Ocean City for a change of pace.

Ocean City's boardwalk is much bigger than Rehoboth's, but the Town of Rehoboth has lots of fun boutiques, shops and many restaurants along Rehoboth Ave. and on the side streets.

Yes, the Maryland Crab soup at the Greene Turtle is delicious.

Thanks for the vote up. It's greatly appreciated.
