John Kohler and health from raw foods

Who is John Kohler?

John Kohler has become well known today in alternative health circles as an expert on raw food dieting. John became a follower of eating raw foods through necessity. In his early 20s he was seriously ill with the life-threatening disease of spinal meningitis but managed to survive and attributed his successful battle to full health to his diet and higher powers.

John Kohler's doctors told him that he had caught the disease because he had a weakened immune system. It was this information that gave him a clue as to what he needed to do because he realised that he had to build his immune system up.

John Kohler and raw foods

John Kohler is like many others who have found out about the benefits of eating raw food having been forced by necessity in their own lives when they have realised they either find how to live in a healthy way or they actually risk dying. That is how serious the matter has been to them but the adversity they have suffered has been a stepping stone to drive them on to another and much better path in life.

John discovered raw foods as the most healthy way of achieving perfect health and avoiding disease and so he made changes in his lifestyle to follow this pathway. He became really fit and full of energy and with his new-found health came the desire to share his knowledge with other people.

John has helped very many sufferers from various diseases by giving out information on healthy eating by sticking to a raw food diet plan and also by personal life-coaching.

He has become a public speaker on raw foods and health matters and appears in many videos talking about these subjects. He gives advice on what foods really are "raw" ones and about gadgets that are best to use such as types of juicer.

One thing John Kohler has stressed is the importance of getting the freshest and most organic fruit and vegetables as possible. The best way to do this is to grow your own.

John is advising people to make good use of any garden space they have and to grow their own fresh foods. He is a real advocate of urban gardening.

John Kohler's garden

John Kohler and his raw food organic garden

John Kohler doesn't just talk about things but puts what he is advising into practice. In order to get the best quality fruit, vegetables, edible flowers and herbs as possible he has converted his home garden into a place where they can be cultivated.

John has filled his front garden with fruit and vegetables so that in the street he lives his stands out with all the mass of greenery. He grows tomatoes and cucumbers and lettuce, and even the strawberry guava.

Many of his plants are grown in raised beds to keep them warmer and aid in their growth. He grows plants in old wine barrels and puts trellises up so that climbing plants like cucumbers can grow up them.

John uses rock dust to mineralise the compost that he uses and he stresses that we need a full range of natural minerals in our foods and this is why this is important.

Because he doesn't use any harmful pesticides in his garden, John Kohler painstakingly spends time getting rid of pests that attack his plants or he provides workable defenses. He has discovered that slugs and snails do not like copper so he has put this metal as protective strips around some of his crops.

John says that the best way to be able to get edible plant foods is to be able to step outside your own door and pick the fruit and vegetables you have grown yourself. I think he makes a very good point there!

John also thanked and gave credit to God or higher powers. He is not a religious man but said that he would not have gotton out of the hospital if it weren't for higher powers. His diet is helping him for sure though.

John's testimony made me cry, he is such a real person.

That is what people are like way up north in California as opposed to Los Angelos. John is a very earthy guy. I like him a lot!

I am surprised that you would write a blog about John Kohler without posting his video about how raw food saved his life. Here is the video. I think you should have posted this video, since this is the best video he has, or one of them....

Well, I had to make a choice out of a lot of videos and I thought the ones I posted illustrated what I'd written well enough. I had said that he regained his health with raw foods. Thank you for the link though!

I do not think this was a well written article Steve. You slopped this article together without doing research on him. He has important websites connected to his name that you didn't bother to put up here. If you write blogs about people, it would be good to do real research about them. John never attributed getting out of the hospital to raw foods but to God or higher powers. So you should not write that John gave credit to this diet alone if that is not what he said. He said that he gave credit to higher powers more than once and that the diet was something that cured him but not the end all to why he is alive. I upped this blog because I like John, but I don't think you did a good job on this blog.

Bard of Ely profile image

Bard of Ely 5 years ago from Lisbon, Portugal Author

Well you are certainly very picky about this article and are actually wrong on one point seeing as there is already a link to living-foods.com from the photo if you would like to check. To have links more than once to the same place is against the rules here and gets the hub penalised so I will have to remove your comments including that link. I have edited it to add "higher powers." And why don't you write your own hubs instead of finding fault with mine?

anonball 5 years ago

It is a very small link under his name and I didn't notice it. Also he has another site "grow your greens.com." That is nowhere on this blog. You never mentioned his thanking God or higher powers on this blog which is something that John stesses in his testimony.

You also have no link to his actual testimony. This is just a sloppy blog.

anonball 5 years ago

You will have to only post comments that never question your ability to write intelligently. I think that you slop many of your blogs together like this and give half-assed information about people. You could care less about John Kohler or you would have had his personal testimony here. You are a phony person.

Bard of Ely profile image

Bard of Ely 5 years ago from Lisbon, Portugal Author

Well if that is what you think then why, as I suggested, don't you write your own hub about John? Personally I think the hub gives plenty of info on him, two videos in which people can hear him speak and links to sites about him.

Thank you for your comments though!

Here is John's testimony. It made me cry. He speaks about what happened to him as a child. He had terrible skin and asthma. He was very sickly and then it got worse and worse where he almost lost his life....It is an amazing testimony. I love his food forest. I hope that the diet is good for him long term, I would hate to see him get sick again.

Here is also a video about this girl Bethany who couldn't walk for years. She recoverd from being paralyzed from the waist down. Now she is alittle older but she is not totally on raw foods and having some issues. Sometimes it takes time for them to learn about nutrition and what their particular body needs. She looks great in this video. Later on a couple years later, she doesn't look as happy. Life isn't perfect for these people. I am sure that John Kohler has his ups and downs on this diet because they have learn how to restore their body on this diet and that could take numbers of years. Thanks.

anonball 5 years ago

I have a toe that was cut and almost cut off. For years the toe was semi-numb. I could move the toe normally thank God but since I have been on this diet and upped my level of raw food, my toe is no longer numb.

Bard of Ely profile image

Bard of Ely 5 years ago from Lisbon, Portugal Author

I just watched the video and that is an amazing story about Bethany's recovery so thanks for sharing that! That is wonderful news too that your toe has healed because of your raw food diet!

anonball 5 years ago

I love these videos. The reason is because modern science doesn't deal with the natural world too much.

She thought for herself because she was being deceived and tells people not to take anyone's crap. This is right because many Doctors are giving people crap and destroying people's. They do not give much hope for the sick or people who have physical or mental problems. Everything is drugs to these people. Bethany has suffered a lot, I can tell that. 3 years in a wheelchair is a very big thing.

anonball 5 years ago

I meant to say, destroying people's lives. Being deceived as a very young person and having to think beyond people in authority takes strength of mind. Most people just listen to Doctors and they remain in a wheelchair or in their position of illness.

There is this man named Aajonus. He is into raw foodism through eating some animal foods as well as plant foods. He is not as popular but does have a following of people. I have just eaten a RAW organic cage free egg yolk again. I eat two cloves of raw garlic with it and something to buffer the raw uncooked garlic. This diet is something a bit scary and unknown but people are led to believe that pasturized food is safe and that it doesn't have bad side effects. Because a food is heated to death to kill all the bacteria, doesn't mean that this dead food is not harmful in another way. There are always risks when eating natural food. People are living in fear of raw foods.

Bard of Ely profile image

Bard of Ely 5 years ago from Lisbon, Portugal Author

Thank you for posting this info, anonball, but please don't post more than one link to the same site because this site picks it up as spam and it is against rules here which means the sites gets lower traffic if it is left and I am hoping as many people as possible see this! I have therefore removed your second post. I want to say that I totally agree with you that people are living in fear of raw foods, and not just raw foods but natural foods from the wild. People won't collect and eat wild berries, nuts, plants and fungi anymore for the same reason! But they will pay ridiculous prices for nowhere near as healthy versions from shops!

anonball 5 years ago

I put two there because I thought that the first one wasn't posted for some strange reason. I feel incredible today. The raw diet is doing wonders for my over-health. I can see major changes but I do require a tad more rest then ususal. I think that it is due to the changes that are taking place. My small gray spot is growing back brown, my eyesight is dramatically improved (I take cod liver oil) eat raw eggs and occasionally eat free range liver. My eyes are 20/20 now. It is amazing how improving your diet can really improve your health. I didn't expect all this. I am still making some mistakes. I bought organic rice cakes. I think that it may have AGE in it. It is difficult to make your own bread on 110 degrees. I encourage anyone here to do research on these people and these diets. I eat much raw kale, but make sure I have a lot of iodine. I am uncomfortable with this diet thhough, cause I am worrying if there is bacteria in my sprouted Quinoa that is raw. It is all new to me.

Bard of Ely profile image

Bard of Ely 5 years ago from Lisbon, Portugal Author

I am very glad you are feeling a lot better because of your diet, anonball, and I can report similarly because I have increased my raw food intake. Yes, it really does accomplish wonders and I can vouch for that as well and am not just writing about the subject for something to write! Something to consider with re to bacteria: animals don't worry about picking up germs from what they eat and drink and on average are much healthier than humans if left to their own devices wouldn't you agree? So does this mean that humans are weak and susceptible to bacterial infection so much more than other mammals? Personally I very much doubt it and if we are I would think it is because our immune systems have been badly weakened by modern deficient diets! Something to think about!

anonball 5 years ago

That's great that you feel some benefits from eating more raw foods! This article about Aajonus is not a popular or well-known article. Also, the ideas in that article are not popular or widely known. He believes (and his followers) believe that salmonella is in our systems already and it helps our body. I have to read it again to make out what he means. There are a lot of fears out there about bacteria. I always refrigerate my sprouts and I am careful about leaving things out. I am do look at expiration dates. I have always been a bit more cautious then other people regarding health. I do not like rollercoasters unless they are very low to the ground and for babies to ride in or water flumes. I am not one to take chances with my health. Garlic kills bacteria. It is safe to eat it in larger quantities then what people suggest. Some say you can eat 10 cloves. Some say 6. It kills salmonella.

Thank you as always for your comments and support, Darski! Yes, sadly it often comes down to how much money you have as to how healthy you can be and poor people usually buy a lot of poor quality food or go without. However, the answer in part is for people to grow more of their own food and that way they get fresh and very healthy food as John shows! I know where I used to live in the Ely council estate in Cardiff there were lots of gardens that could have been used for growing fruit and veg but few people doing so.

Marissa 5 years ago

I am buying a book on foraging and it is good to know how to grow your own food anyway you can manage it. It is also extremely important to know how to forage so you won't have rely on supermarkets or healthfood stores and their enormous prices. Markus Rothkranz says it right, that superfood is the kind you pick and eat immediately.

Bard of Ely profile image

Bard of Ely 5 years ago from Lisbon, Portugal Author

Men are here for ONE thing. My personal enjoyment.

I like men in G strings but prefer them with nothing on.

I like them young and hot.

I don't care too much about brains in a man to be honest. I go for youth and beauty. Seriously, this is the truth. The hotter the better. Sometimes I do think of men as sexual objects and I think that whenever an older man insults or ignores a younger man for whatever reason it is because they are jealous of their looks.

Men are worth one thing....LOOKS, ABS, BUTTOCK, FACE, PECKS, NICE YOUNG SKIN. I have links of soft porno connected to my website and I prefer men to walk around with very low rising pants and no underwear. If you call them a low life I will defend them.

Bard of Ely profile image

It's a bit off topic but thanks for posting! btw my friend Guru Rasa von Werder aka Kellie Everts prefers younger men too and she would probably agree with you!

Marissa 5 years ago

Since I am young, I prefer men my own age.

I am Anthony's age. Why are you insulting me again?

Why are you implying that I am not young?

You have never met me in person wacko and either has Gregg!

I dated a 22 year old and and he my last boyfriend. I was two years older than he was ...

I am exactly Anthony's age. Can you accept that I am Anthony's age and not old or your age, or the age that Gregg said I was?

Can you accept reality?

Bard of Ely profile image

Bard of Ely 5 years ago from Lisbon, Portugal Author

I quote you: "I like them young and hot." I don't know what you are on about again as I am certainly not guilty of lying about you. Personally I couldn't care less how old you are, nor anyone else for that matter! None of this has anything at all to do with John Kohler or raw food so has gone way off topic. I have deleted your second post because of the f-word because such language is not allowed on hubpages!

Marissa 5 years ago

I like them young and hot. Right now I have an older boyfriend who is 36. He isn't taking good care of himself and it bothers me. I prefer men who take good care of their bodies. I mean GOOD care. Some women go for much older men or men who look old for their ages. When I say I like them young and hot I am referring to men taking good care of their bodies at any age.

Bard of Ely profile image

Bard of Ely 5 years ago from Lisbon, Portugal Author

Thanks for explaining! I have been watching lots of videos and reading info on websites and will be writing more hubs in this health series when I get a chance. I am particularly impressed personally with Markus Rothkranz, mainly because I understand all he talks about and can see a fault in myself that I aim to correct, namely that whilst I know about what wild plants you can eat and talk about these plants to people I have not made a point of eating any daily or anywhere near the degree he does. So bearing that in mind I have just walked back from town and went on some wasteground to see what I could find today and have been eating sowthistle flowers and leaves, and also leaves of goosefoot and mallow, as well as some species of wild mustard. I aim to continue doing this!

Marissa 5 years ago

One reason that I had very serious problems with maintaining relationships or the fact that I am unmarried is that men that I am meeting don't take care of their bodies. Most of the men I meet drink a lot, smoke pot a lot, eat junkfood a lot, or they are vegan and they are lethargic. It is a serious problem when men who are my age or a little bit younger are acting like they are in a rocking chair. I don't know much about Markus. I really can't wait to get a book on foraging. I have a nice boyfriend right now and he is not that old, but he is acting old and it has nothing to do with the number. It is bothering me that his attitude about aging and life is not good. My last boyfriend who was 22 was an avid dope smoker. He had lines around his eyes and was lethargic. I felt as though I was with an old man. Btw..detoxing is no fun. Do it slowly. I had a bad reaction all week from detoxing. I have been extremely tired in the last few days. I was very worried. When you drastically change your diet you will have symptoms. The body has to readjust. I was feeling great, but detoxing and changing diet affects how you feel and you may not feel good for awhile if you do decide to do this diet.

Bard of Ely profile image

Bard of Ely 5 years ago from Lisbon, Portugal Author

It is very difficult I know to find people who don't drink a lot, smoke, take drugs, eat junkfood or do all of these things. I actually can't think of anyone I know here that doesn't do at least one of those things on a regular basis. It is hardly surprising that so many people are ill and so many people die at any early age! It is really crazy! btw I have never known any dope-smokers who don't get lines around their eyes but they will tell you it is good for you!

Markus has reversed his aging so he looks a lot younger than the 48 years that he is and he is totally fit unlike when he was younger and suffered terrible illnesses and nearly died. He believes that wild plants are what we all need because they provide every nutrient we need and are the perfect medicines to heal us too. And they are free!

Marissa 5 years ago

Personally, I do not think that Markus looks much younger than his age at all. He doesn't look bad but he does not look as good as some other people I know at his age. He has a lot of wrinkles and leather skin from being in the sun and doesn't have enough omega 3 fatty acids in his diet. Also, Anthony doesn't look that young for his age either and that is probably due to lack of Omega 3 fatty acid, deficiencies from the vegan diet and too much sun. Penny Shelton is 45 and she looks like Markus's daughter. That is a fact. Markus is what a typical man looks like when they don't take good care of themselves. I would call Markus average. Just because he is thin and buffed doesn't make him young looking. Some of the raw vegans smoke weed. Markus's hair is dried out. I don't know what your standards are but Markus is not a young looking 48 year old, though a lot look worse.

There is a woman Susan Ciminelli who doesn't believe in Botox etc..who looks so much better than this guy at 50. She eats a more balanced diet and I think she is healthier looking.

Bard of Ely profile image

Bard of Ely 5 years ago from Lisbon, Portugal Author

For some reason both links to Susan don't work so I have not posted them but I will go and find her. I just found a video on YouTube and I see what you mean!

Marissa 5 years ago

Your face doesn't look really old bard. That is probably due to eating sardines and having a more balanced diet. I really don't think that veganism is that healthy. They look as if they are lacking something.

You had a video of yourself around 40 years old and you look a lot better and younger looking than this Markus guy. I think that meat eaters look younger if they eat veggies. Omega 3 fatty acids is what really does it plus fruits and veggies. These vegans do not look healthy to me. For years many vegans, vegetarians and junkfood junkies have tried to get me into their diet. I rejected it. Honestly, my father just wrote me that Markus looks so phoney and like a man just in this to make money. I am sure there is some sincerity there but some raw foodies are out there trying to make this into a hollywood event. It is good to go out and forage. It is an excellent idea especially people who do not have a garden. I really want to get into this foraging thing. I have wanted to do this for a very long time. My detox symptoms are getting better and so is my mouth. ahaha

Thank you for the compliment,Marissa! I ate some raw hake earlier today too - my cat loves it! I think Markus is right about how the wild plants have a full range of minerals and how we have them growing all around us. I know that to be the case. I am aiming to make sure I eat some every day. I think he is right about God providing us with all we need. I think he is right we can all heal ourselves! Yes, he is promoting his message with all the showbiz style of Hollywood but I don't think this is surprising seeing as that is where he has worked before, and it gets results though I can see it as a form of mind control. I note that most of the raw food 'experts' are all trying to sell you something! My take on it is this: if you get yourself into good health then you don't need any books, DVDs or coaching - you may need some of these things to begin with but that's all. So many organisations and people keep trying to sell more and more stuff. The other point I would make is that whilst being vegan and on wild foods can work well for a while, as Dr Bass I think it is that says, a time will be reached when this may no longer be the case. I was actually talking to a friend here the other day who knows a lot about Chinese medicine and she thinks that a strict raw vegan diet will eventually go out of balance for the person following it.

Markus says somewhere that for a newcomer to foraging it is best to start of with the plants you are sure of like dandelion is one everyone knows and then gradually learn more and more. I would agree with that. It is a learning process.

Marissa 5 years ago

We have snow snow snow. I wonder what I would pick in this weather? Markus looks better than most people his age, but I still think that people who are on a health diet that included some wild grass fed meat or fish are healthier looking. The raw model is less into hollywood and showbiz. He is so into promoting living off the land. I haven't seen anything that looks hollywood from the Raw model except that he calls himself the raw model. I believe that this guy loves what he is doing, not just to look good but he loves nature.

I have just been watching the Rawmodel - the video you posted and another and have shared them at Facebook. Yes, he gives the impression that he wants to get on with doing something practical like planting plants rather than promoting anything. I can see why you like him.

What I love about this video is he is talking about being self-sufficient and how we are wage slaves to people who want to control people. He is inspires people to buy a lot of land for 10 thousand dollars and living off the land. He is completely anti-authority. This is the truth we are now living in an oppressive control grid and our resources are the produce section in the grocery store. Being in Texas, and overly fond of making my own Mexican cuisines. . .I've recently found that I do prefer my onions, peppers, tomatoes, etc, etc, etc raw; it's a very crisp clean flavour that cooking those just takes out of the flavour equation.

Beans and corn though. . . .I have to cook, especially if you deal with Black beans ever; those things have to really be cooked a while to soften them up enough to enjoy.

Now garlic and avocado. . . .go really well together fresh, mixed with a little salt and lime, of course :=\

mazzastick 5 years ago

I grow a vegetable garden in my backyard every year. Once you grow your own, you may never want to go back to the grocery store for veggies again.I found that my stomach has difficulty digesting the skin on some fruits and vegetables. I am going to ask my wife for a juicer, for my birthday. Easier assimilation into the body.

Bard, what do you think of this foraging video by Green Deane? He claims that we should not eat anything in the wild that has not been approved of by an expert.

What do you think of that? He is an expert on the subject of foraging or he is supposed to be an expert. Let me know what you think.

Bard of Ely profile image

Bard of Ely 5 years ago from Lisbon, Portugal Author

I just watched that video and some others of his. He certainly knows his subject well. I think the warning is mainly just to cover himself. He does so on another video saying this is "for entertainment purposes only." But I think it is a very valid warning because there are some very poisonous plants. I recommend starting with those plants that are easy to identify such as dandelions, thistles, sowthistles, shepherd's purse, nettles, mallow species and chickweed. Wild radish, mustard, brassicas and cress species are all edible and all have a distinctive mustard oil hot flavour and smell to varying degrees. I would warn against picking plants in the parsley family (umbellifers) because there are a few very poisonous ones such as hemlock, fool's parsley and hemlock water dropwort. There are very good plants like fennel, goutweed, chervil, alexanders and wild carrot in the same family but it is best to have someone who knows to show you which are OK. I noted he made a point of warning about not eating too much of any oxalis/wood sorrel type because of the oxalic acid. It is important because it can make arthritis or gout much worse or cause it. There are plenty of garden flowers you can eat too such as rose petals, marigold petals, hibiscus and hollyhock flowers, nasturtium flowers, leaves and seeds. But make sure anything you gather is out of the way of road fumes and hasn't been sprayed. Start with collecting the ones you are sure of.

In this days I have frequently heard talking about the raw food diet. Maybe is a coincidence or maybe is a sign of destiny!!.... I do not know.

But the argument fascinates me... Very interesting. My diet is already rich in raw food, but now I want to learn more . And I can start from John Kohler! Thanks for sharing!

So far this is the most inspiring raw food video I have seen.

I personally advocate foraging over gardening. You don't need to identify too many plants as edible to have a large volume. Nettles, dandelions, and clovers are three of my mainstays. I wish more raw foodists would advocate foraging because there is this myth that being raw has to be expensive and given some of the vanity superfoods out there it is easy to understand this perception.

Come what may I do think the raw food movement is the next big diet trend and not one that is going to go away because as John Kohler shows it is just too important to people's health. Thanks for promoting it.

Hello Bard. this is great! John Kohler is such a positive man and fun! I love his exuberance and smile..his ease at explaining what he does and why. What a treat and a joy! Your words leading up to the great videos cover his lifestyle so well. The videos uphold your description and your description perfectly describes John's videos. Wonderful! And, Mr. Kohler looks amazingly well! Thumbs up to the both of you!

Great Article! Now if we can get HOA's to allow people to plant vegetables and fruit in front lawns that would be a boost. There is also a wave of communities not allowing this because of some kind of health issues. It think they are ridiculous. Feed the World in your own backyard! or at lease share with your neighbors.
