Drinks Anyone?:

I have never been a big drinker even when I drank so many moons ago. So it should not be surprising that I did not learn the term Mocktails until, well, I will say almost an hour ago at about 9:05 AM. It is now 10:02 AM on a cold and rainy May 16, 2011 morning.

There was a question posed on the Hub-Pages requesting help with some Mocktails to serve friends, and I thought. Mocktail? What the hell is ..., and then I went back off to working on my Hubs. I have a problem with sticking to what I am supposed to do, and I end up wasting hours doing something that should only take one hour at most.

Once I completed my daily first task for my Hubs, I went back to the question and realized the questioner must be talking about Virgin -- Non-Alcoholic -- drinks. Still, I did not want to answer a question by just guessing.

I searched the word Mocktails, and came up with a site www.drink-recipes.org.uk/mocktails/. Please copy and paste.

I scrolled down and saw a long list of Virgin -- Mocktail -- drinks and was shocked. I only saw one that I truly drink often. Virgin Pina Colada. As a matter of fact I just ordered that drink two weeks ago while at my material uncle's 50th surprise birthday party. The ... party was given at my younger brother's Rib Bar & Grill. I bought three. One for my mother, my uncle, and me. We enjoyed our delicious drinks.

Here are a few of the Non-Alcoholic -- Mocktails or Virgin -- Drinks I have discovered:

Margarita Mocktail, Strawberry Mocktail, Banana Strawberry Mocktail, Pineapple Passion Mocktail, Hurricane Mocktail, Mai Tai Mocktail, Mojito Mocktail, Punch Mocktail, Twista Mocktail, Kamikaze Mocktail, Apple Pie Mocktail, Shirley Temple Mocktail, Cranberry Clown Mocktail, Mickey Mouse Mocktail, and so much more ....

Coconut Cocktail Recipes:

Strawberry Milkshake, Angel Face Mocktail, Atomic Cat Mocktail, Baby Cocktail Mocktail, Baby Orange Fizz Mocktail, Cola Float Mocktail, Cranberry Cooler Mocktail, Crazy Cow Mocktail, Cream Cup Mocktail, Creamy Creamsicle Mocktail, Grapeberry Mocktail, Grapefruit And Orange Mocktail, Great Grape Mocktail, Iced Coffee Mocktail, Lemon Cocktail Mocktail, Virgin Pina Colada, and Virgin Strawberry Colada. Again, there is so many more recipes ....

After completing this list of Non Alcoholic -- Mocktails or Virgin -- Drink Recipes I have become thirsty. I only have Home-made Zero Calorie Lemonade sitting next to me as I work. No I do not have the Lemon Cocktail Mocktail. Though that does sound great.

Mocktail -- Virgin -- Drinks:

HAVE YOU EVER HAD A MOCKTAIL -- VIRGIN -- DRINK BEFORE?:

  • Yes!
  • No!
  • I Did, But I Did Not Like Them.
  • I Did Not, And I Do Not Want To Try.
  • No, But I Am Willing To Try.

I never heard this term before. As others have said, the usual term is "virgin". Thanks for bringing me into the 2010s. Now I can ask my guests if they'd like a cocktail, er, I mean mocktail!

One of my favorite mocktails is the virgin bloody mary! However, I really enjoy the pina colada also!

Great hub! Voted up!

I love cocktails but every now and then I want the drink but not the alcohol that goes with it. I never knew they were called mocktails either. Great hub.

I'm a moderate drinker, but, mocktails are good, too, especially if you're trying to pace yourself for a long evening.

Excellent and interesting hub!

These are great recipes. I do drink, but live in the land of non-drinkers (Utah) so these will come in handy when socializing with my new co-workers most of whom are Mormons. Voted up, marked useful, beautiful and bookmarked. One question; Why is your score still a 1?

Hi N.E.,

It'll take me some time to learn Face Book and Twitter and i am not there yet. I just learned how to incoporate pictures and vide feeds into my Hubs.

I will not go near Helium now. I believe you.

Trust me it gets easier feeding your son. You just have to be persistent which I know you are and kep it up. It is a marathon. Eventually, he will be eating you out of house and home without any cue from you.

Role playing is really good practice for both of you. It is also helpful so you know what he will do in any given situation as you have rehearsed his responses. You can buy cars commercially. BY I just buy index cars and write down common difficult situations in elemnetary school. Like a bully is picking on you or you forgot your homework or you really need a break. Anything and everything that can happen and then I role play it and try to find creative socially responsibe answers. Someimes it is best to let byour son be the protagonist so he lets you nwo whaat he faces everyday in school. And the write it on index cards, shuffle and together find a stradegy to conflict resolution. I fyou have difficulty no problem. Our country seems to be terrible at conflict resolution for the better part of 15 years.

And if you have time, Kei' school is creating schedules right now, stop by and if he doesn't have an IEP get a 504. In that document request the school work with him extra on homework and conflict resolution. It shouldn't all be on you but we are Mom's and we go the extra mile.

Now why should your child have to practice conflict resolution when his peers don't? It upsets me to say but society is harder on childre with special needs than they are on typicly developing peers. besides you have a funding document either an IEP or a 504 which provies you with an opportunity to request certain things be taught to your son.

The eating thing gets better once he is through puberty. Then you will have nothing left to eat for your self. I know I am going through this now where I have to grocery shop every 3 days because my son eats everything. He is 11 5'4" and 110 lbs so it hs worked for him. Ifd you have any difficulty let me know and I will amend the diet to meet Ke needs.

I am so glad you are my friend as well. It is good not to be alone iin all of this. Thanks for shoing me the ropes. I value our friendship. I want you to know I think you are an aawesome parent and person the way you care for your son and the generosity you show your readers by sharing your story.

The best to you and yours.

Someday I will figure out the Facebook!!

Hey JT,

I will look into your Hub -- ASAP -- on Infantile Autism. Sounds sad, yet interesting.

It took me a while to understand other medias. Facebook is cool, Twitter not so bad, but The Hubpages? Well, I love it. LOL.

I was on Helium, but no one really reads your work on there. So, I have a very good article on Online Scams on there that has not been read by anyone, but some type of editorial manage who wanted me to do more, because of my Scam article. That was flattering, but I was already on Hubpages, and I was not interested in Helium for anything more than taking my work off their site. LOL.

So, I wanted to take the article off, and they will not allow me to take any of my work off of their site ever. They suck. LOL.

Happy to share your work. LOL.

Hey JT, Kei is so tired of me making him eat and eat and eat .... LOL. I told him to have some popcorn the other day, and he was about to say no thank you, and then realized he had no choice, and actually said, "Oh, you're not asking me." LOL. OMG. I did not laugh at that time, but OMG. He just made me crack up inside.

I am so happy we are friends on here, because it surely feels great having someone ... who knows what it is like to have a child with special needs issues.

Well, Take Care My Friend,

N.E.

Hi N.E.,

It is all good. No worries. I am just happy I could write something of service to you and other families. Thanks for sharing my stuff on FaceBook and Twitter. I am embarrassed to admit but I just don't know how to use them yet.

I wrote a really great article on Infantile Autism and I think nyou will see the parallels between Autism and ADHD specifically in that article and you have to check out the picture of Palin in her bikini on my hub. LOL!!

Really grateful to have you as a friend and that I can write something useful. Thankf for putting me on Facebook and Twitter. I have no idea how to work that stuff.

Make certain you increase Kei's calloric intake according to the diet I offered when you put him in sports inorder to maintain his weight. Keep encouraging eating and he will get use to it. I know I do it everyday as well.

Be well my friend,

JT

Hey JT,

I had a niece who once carved into one of my old TV sets. Shocked the heck out of me. She was and is ADHD, and has no help for it. When she is left alone and is bored everyone is in trouble.

What you say makes sense to me about Autism and ADHD being related.

Unfortunately with my son it is destructive. You should see what he did to his $100.00 toy chest. OMG. LOL. It took me awhile to realize he really has to be around me all the time. Actually it was implied by one of his therapists. LOL. I caught it two days his session. LOL.

You know JT, it is great to know I am not alone. It just feels wonderful to be honest. I am so happy to know you. LOL.

I am actually use to what I have to do. I am more tired when I do not plan my sleep. LOL. If I just fall asleep after a long day that is trouble. LOL.

Take Care Friend,

JT walters 5 years ago

I'l check my other hubs. My son taeks things apart as well. TV, Microwaves, Telephones...you name it. I think that is an autistic thing though not a ADHD thing but there are similarities between the two dosirders.

It is not really a destructive tendency by children with Autims or ADHD it is more of a need to understand hw everything workds down to tha last detail. It is how their minds work. They must understand everything. It is of little consequence when the oven has been taken apart while you are in the shower (That has actaully happened to me and it was only a 15 mnute shower.). I just figured he might be able to handle the telephone since he plays the hand held video game. A lot fo cell phones have games on them.

N.E. You are not alone. I live this life as well and it is not an easy life but I love my son as I know you love yours with all of my heart and I love and acceot my son as he is as I know you do yours.

So yeah, am with you eve though I am in Florida. And Casey Anthony only got six days maybe a little more but I give her less than a year on the outside.

Friend I know it can be exhausting but I also know everythime your son hugs you or he laughs your heart fills with joy and you are replenished.

It is good we escaped together.

I'll check out my other hub if I can remember which one we were on. We bounce around like we havd ADHD on these Hubs.

I am working on a lot of hubs to be published after court.

Always wonderful to hear from you my friend.

Hi JT,

I think I answered your questions about my son on my other Hub. LOL. Sorry about that.

I really would love to read your how to Hubs on feeding special needs kids.

Yeah, Hubpages is really great escape times for me also.

Oh, my son cannot have a cell phone. He will give it away or break it. LOL. He does not even get to stay in his own room or anywhere by himself for too long. He has destroyed so many things and that is on medicine. LOL.

He is around me almost 24/7. OMG. LOL. I am tired. I have not been in my own bedroom in way too many years. Not to sleep that is. LOL.

He is playing right now in front of me, and that is cool, because he can not do anything to hurt himself, or destroy his bedroom. LOL.

Take Care Friend,

N.E.

Jt Walters 5 years ago

I will work on it after court and you're right there is probably an audience for this.

One las thing are you positive your son isn't autistic? I just repsonded to another hub we are conversing on ad you much he had limited speech. Autism is a communication disorder with a metabolice disorder underlying. It is about $11.40 blood test to see if he as lactic acdosis. It maight be worth it t pay if you can get his doctor to order it. Autism would explain the feeding issues which I assume were present before the meds. ADHD doesn't usually have speec issues combined. I hate to ask the question but gettingt he right diagnosis is really imprtant. he could be Aspberger's Syndrome which would explain alot of what you have written.

After court N.E.. I will write. I know your son is doing well now but it bares checking out. It is only a blood test.

I will work on them while I am going through court but I have to rpepare for court now. HubPages is my only break from all the stress again a very benign escape.

LOL

You take care as well my friend and check out the cell phone for your son.

Hey JT,

I actually believe you should make them into several different Hubs.

What ever the specific topic, have it as the sub title. Example: Special Needs Feeding: Schedules. People need help, and I believe you have to answers. How do Hubs seems to be the most sort after Hubs.

Waiting to read ....

Hi, again, JT,

Thanks again.

I am happy to know that I am not over doing it. LOL. I actually like the seven meals deal. I guess that is why I said two snacks along with the five meals. LOL.

We have to do what we have to do as mothers. LOL.

Oh, I just completed reading one of your Hubs. I shared it. LOL.

Take Care Friend,

N.E.

JT Walters 5 years ago

We do the five to seven meals a day here as well. It is a pain but is my diet secret. I just feeding my son. Pasta is a long chain carbohydrate but you need to mix in fats and sugars inorder for your son to get the biochemical food he needs. Oh yes, you are doing that with the pediasure..

I only boil pasta in chicken buoliion. So to add protein into my son's diet. I always make homemade sauce which always includes carrots onions for the sugars. I pack lots and lost of calories inot ech meal. Perhpa si should write a hub about this.

Try sticking the cornstarch nin the macroni and cheese and just make certain you son has apple slices with it.

Ihe had the same problem with getting my son to eat and I did the absolutely worse parenting skills thing in the world. I let him eat in front of the Television. It is a really bad habit but it works. I only turn the tv on and let my son watch as long as he keeps eating. Five minutes of not eating and I shut tv off. My child has an hour of two of tv each day. The extra hours he gets in are for eating. It is a behavior technique were you wrap and activity your child isn't so fond of like eating with something he loves like watching tv.

Desperate times call for desperate measures and this has helped my son.

Thanks for reading my hubs as well.

All My Best,

Jt

Hey JT, miss you. LOL.

I took your advice on pasta, and I made my son pasta most of that week. He loved it, and got tired of it all at the same time. LOL. I did not care, because he ate it. I am going to look into different pasta ideas also. Thanks again.

I really have to get that cornstarch. LOL.

I am to the point where I do not ask him if he wants to eat anymore I just serve him his meals, and tell him he must eat. LOL. He will give up eating within three to four bites. LOL.

Yesterday -- after seeing his therapist -- I decided I would give him five small meals a day plus two snacks. He looked at me like I was crazy. LOL. I am not sure how I am going to do it, but I am going to do something to help him.

My poor child is fading away, and happy. LOL. It is scaring me, but he is playing, coloring, reading, and doing math for fun. He is cool. LOL.

I thank you so much for your great advice.

I am going to check out your hubs.

Thanks again.

Jt Walters 5 years ago

Hi N.E.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I had to push out several more hubs. It was important to get the hurricanes ones finished.

I can speak to this loss of apeptite. It is fairly common and it usually it will not get btter while your son takes his medication. Sometimes doctors take kids off of the meds during the Summer so they eat better. It is a common problem but then sometimes the children get into trouble related to their ADHD or ADD when off meds. It is a questonable call. As a rule I like to keep meds as low as possible. Since yor son has gtten better on meds he needs them. Your job wll be to imporve his eating. It can been done several ways and I always defer to medical advice but there are medications that improve appetite that aren't risky. For instance Periactin is an antihystemine (sp?) that has the side effect of making a person very hungry. It is a bengin medication that has been on the market since the 1960(s). There are other medications that ca cause hunger as well but I can't recommend them as they are reserved for cancer patients and are less benign.

Try adding the raw cornstarch into your son's diet especially the pediasure. Cornstarch will put punds on your child and when he has more calories in him you might see him more calm as well.

Autism has a metabolic origin and so might ADHD and ADD but it hasn't been proven yet. Proof takes a lot but it there are so many similarities it might bare asking your son's doctor if he can be put on a lowe dose of Periactin to increase his appetite. If not then plug away at the raw cornstarch. One way or another you will make it.

I am really glad to hear your son is on grade level. ADHD and ADD don't lack for intelligence just the ability to stay still long enough for teachers to measure it.

I wirte alot on autism and some of the things I write might be of use to you. Especially focus in on the Autism and home schooling and error analysis article I wrote if you will. There are good practical ideas and questions to ask of the school system that is teaching your son.

It is always awesome writing to you again sorry it took me so long to get back to you....swamped.

All My Best and look forward to hearing from you!!

Ginger ale & OJ.. never woulda thought of that! Great idea! I live Vernors but find it's hard to find in the south.. pretty close though. Thanks frugal! Oh, I find too, a glass can give kids who don't want things good for them a little fun. My mom used to let me have grape juice in a brandy glass! (outside.. you know, kids=stains lol) I remember the elderly man next door used to say "only a little of that now" He knew it was grape, but a little tease and I'd get the shy grin and he'd get a giggle! And I'd drink up the juice!

Ya know, some parents might think that a bad idea, letting a kid have an alcohol glass is bad, but I really don't even think I knew what alcohol was, I just though "wow a fancy glass other kids don't have" :) Luckily my parents weren't drinkers so I had no idea! :D

Hello Jt,

At first my son's doctor thought he was mildly autistic, then other doctors diagnosed him with ADHD. Worse thing about his ADHD is that he has impulsive tendencies with it. OMG is all I can say. LOL.

Kei could not stay still, before the medicine. LOL. Still, I was actually against the medicine. LOL. OMG. LOL.

Then when I first received his first set of meds, & gave it to him, it really did not work. It did stopped his movements. I was relieved, and thought he this medicine does not seem that bad. LOL.

Before he would move so much he would be laying on his chair and under it while was suppose to be doing class work or homework. LOL. It was mentally draining. LOL. He really could not learn that way. Now, he is on grade level.

Still, the more meds he takes the lower his appetite becomes. I was told he would be more hungry at a certain time during the day, and that has not happened as of yet. LOL.

Well, that is my life. LOL. I am sure yours is similar.

It is really great communicating with you also.

You have a great day also.

Wow, that sounds so cool about your son's health .... Yeah, when they start reading with total understanding we are in trouble. LOL.

Jt Walters 5 years ago

I'm teeling you a little cornstarhc in his pediasure will go a long way to putting wieght on him. Corn starch is a long chained complexed carbohydrate much like pasta. If you can't get your son to eat pasta as a regular part og diet try adding cornstarch (I used Arg for about $1.10 a box.) and added it to my son's pediasure. That packed the weight on and Alex is in good physical shape. He eats well now and he no longer needs the pediasure plus he has read the bottle so when he turned 11 that was it he was done with it.

We worked hard as Moms.

Hey JT,

Well, I am happy I am not weird. LOL.

We all seem to drink the Pedisure or Ensure for a family members.

My son has ADHD, and he is on medication. He takes three different meds each day. He also is very low in weight for his age and height, and his doctors were worried about that so one of his doctor's prescribed Pedisure for him.

OMG. Not one minute did I believe there was a judgement against my taste. LOL. Please. I love differences, that is what makes the world go around. LOL. I love broccoli and my son hates it. I love mushrooms, and my son and sister despises it. LOL.

Actually, I like to mix mushrooms with almost everything I eat. Hum, I think I may be weird. LOL.

It is great hearing about your son. Nice to hear that Pedisure has great results, because I do worry about my son's health, but I try not to let him know that.

Thank you so much for your comments.

Take Care,

Actually no one is weird. My Son has a rare disorder and he requires extra calories. He also has autism. I have just made it a practice to taste everythng before I give it to my son.

No judgements though N.C. You can like whatever you want.

The good news is my son is taller than I am now and he is doing well health wise. That pediasure gave him the nutrition he needed to grow.

LOL to all everyone :)

N.E. You're silly! Not weird or greedy! LOL :) So lots of people like things others don't! Right! :)

jt walters: Don't give up! If you don't care for the prediasure, maybe try the ensure! I started out with the plain ol' milkshake because my dad had dementia and wouldn't have ANYTHING if I didn't try it FIRST! lol.. so that's when I realized, hey, not too bad! Got dad to drink them so he had his vitamins when he couldn't swallow food so why not!

It was just the past few months that I wandered to other flavors! Maybe try it, don't forget, putting it in the freezer might give it a boost to flavor I don't know, I just did it! lol.

I am going to try some of the "real" Mocktails N.E. suggests though! I'm not really into drinking, and on the occasions I do, it's like 2-3 beers! I've been known to go to parties and be the only sober person there lol! What they might drink in a few hours takes me the whole night! ha :) But well, I get to be the sober driver lol! Which is good, there always needs to be one! :)

My son also had to have pediasure and he would all drink the banana cream, I tasted all of the and yuck!!

Hey Katharella,

My son has to have Pedisure, and I tasted the Banana Cream one. Oh, yeah it was frozen, and delicious. LOL. I am not sure that would be called a Mocktail either though. LOL. Still, it was good.

Still, at the same time, you could put rum or scotch into almost anything so hey why not call it a Mocktail. LOL.

I love the information you shared.

Thanks for your comments.

Take Care,

Hi N.E. I don't know if this falls under Mocktails, but it's something I do on occasion because I'm not really a drinker either! Actually sometimes when I'm not really even hungry, but I know I need the vitamins, believe it or not, I actually buy those Ensure drinks for elderly people! lol Seriously! I REALLY like the one that has the Butternut Cream flavor! In fact I put it in my tall wine glass, (frosted of course) then pop it back in the freezer for about 15-20 minutes, and those are my "Mocktails" They're good, good for you, and don't taste bad, just have to remember they REPLACE a meal, not to be had WITH a meal! :) But actually since it's a health drink, you can even share them with your son! The good thing too is, you can cap them and keep it in the fridge and, they're good all day for sips! Great hub! I already do the Pina Colada one, and actually like to get the Coconut oil from the heath food store, it's not only good for you, I've seen girls using it for skin softener! One girl's hair was like silk! v-up!! :)

Hi JT,

First I just want to thank you for your service to this country.

I could not speak at first when I read your simply statement about not being able to drink, because you are on call basically.

I thank you for reading my work, for your kind words.

Please take care of yourself.

For those of us on active duty as parents we are required to be alcohol free. It is nice to be reminded we can fit into the hip crowd without having to compromise our roles in society.

Great read.

Hey Minnetonka,

Nice hearing from you.

Yeah, it is weird requesting a non-alcoholic drink by asking for a virgin whatever it is you desire. LOL.

Still, whenever I feel like a Pina Colada, I ask for a virgin Pina Colada. LOL.

I thank you so much for your comments.

Hi JBunce,

I have to say I am truly interested in getting Crystal Light Mocktails even more so now. LOL. I just have to try it. LOL.

The funny thing about getting a virgin -- mocktail -- drink from my brother's bar was the bartender looked puzzled. LOL. My brother did not know how to charge for virgin drinks. LOL. I paid $5.00. I was happy. LOL.

No one seems to order non-alcoholic drinks at his bar and grill. LOL.

Thanks so much for your comments, and information.

Take Care,

N.E.

The strangest thing about Crystal Light Mocktails... well, the Margarita one anyhow, which is the only one I've tried... is that, as I said, they taste "kind of" like the original, but when I cut open the tube the SMELL was EXACTLY like the original. I thought there was an actual Margarita in that tube, it smelled so much like one... and then it tasted "kind of" like one. And I've always heard that taste and smell are supposed to be so closely related!

I have to believe you're right about the ones from a bartender being the best, though. I'd be especially interested to find if there's a Strawberry Margarita mocktail... that used to be my favorite, back when I sometimes drank the stronger stuff. (These days, only an occasional beer now and then.)

Hey JBunce,

Crystal Light is refreshing, but my face is always breaking out after I drink it. LOL. So, I don't really drink it. LOL.

Still, they sell Mocktails? LOL.

Wow, I am curious about that. LOL. I have to make sure I have nowhere to go for a day or so after drinking it. LOL.

I can imagine it tasting a bit weird though. That only makes sense to me. After all you are probably just adding water right? LOL. Yeah, that would be weird. LOL.

I think Mocktails from a bartender is best. LOL.

Still, I am going to try the Crystal Light Mocktails. LOL. I am really curious about them. LOL.

Thanks for the information.

I voted you up too and I was sure I saw you with a whopping good number a few days ago. I have a friend from Trinidad leaving because her hubs kept being taken down and she was 50 or under but this is ridiculous. I will read back a few since I am sure you have said. It made me screaming made to get a 47 on a just published hub a few days ago and in all this time it has always been 50 or +. Are they trying to run off certain ones that don't do as they like to bring them money or what? Later, chin up.

I have a friend that is in AA and we go out for mocktails. I prefer the real deal myself but am happy to hold off until I get home so that she isn't tempted. They look good and I'm sure they taste fine...as a chaser!

I also am not a big drinker, but I love a pretty glass and drink. I love to have cocktails when having dinner out and sometimes it is a virgin cocktail or Mocktail that is appropriate. My teenage daughter and I have virgin cocktails together, when we are at a restaurant. Thank you for another fun Hub.

JBunce 5 years ago from Minneapolis, Minnesota

I actually ran into a display of Crystal Light "Mocktails" (they were actually labeled that way) at an area supermarket last night. Three kinds: Margarita, Appletini and Mojito. Out of sheer curiosity I bought the Margarita (because that's the only one of the three I've ever actually had, so the only one where I could make a comparison). Very weird. Certainly I'd never mistake it for an actual Margarita, but even if I didn't know what it was I'd probably think "This kind of tastes a little like a Margarita". These definitely sound a lot more appealing, though. I'll be sure to try some.

Hey The Frog Prince,

Wow, Shirley Temple? That sounds cool.

For two straight years my parents allowed my younger brother and me to have a 1/4 glass of wine after Thanksgiving dinner. We felt grown up -- too -- until we fell asleep on our sofa just 30 minutes after drinking the wine. LOL.

Yeah, we were passed out for three to four hours. When we woke up it was dark and my parents were smirking as they informed us about all the visitors who came to our home. They claimed they tried waking us up, but we would not awaken. LOL. Yeah right. My mother seemed too relaxed and happy to have us out of her way as she cleaned. LOL.

This happened for two years straight, and on the third year of our wine offering my younger brother and I decided not to drink any wine. My parents just smiled.

LOL.

Thanks for sharing your story which reminded me of that funny memory.

Take Care,

N.E.
