Lindt dark chocolate has a long history.
In 1845, David Sprungli-Schwartz and his son Rudolph Sprungli-Ammann started manufacturing chocolate in solid form from their confectionery shop in Zurich, Switzerland.
A few years later, in 1879, Rodolphe Lindt invented the conche, a type of solid chocolate far superior to what was available at the time. He was already a famous chocolate maker.
In 1899, Sprungli bought over Lindt, keeping the Lindt name that was already famous.
The new company expanded rapidly. Their chocolate was second to none, and everybody loved the superior taste and delicious melting qualities of their chocolate.
Between 1900 and 1920, the exported their Lindt dark chocolate to over 20 countries. Between the wars times were very difficult due to sugar rationing among other things, but the company survived despite zero growth.
In 1977, Lindt and Sprungli began buying up international companies, and today have 8 production sites in Europe and the US.
