What Is Luo Han Guo
The luo han guo fruits are only found in southern China with some coming from neighboring northern Thailand. Luo han guo means "saint" fruit. "Luo han" means "saint" in English. And "guo" means "fruit". However, the common name for it is "monk fruit". The English name for this fruit is called momordica fruit. The scientific name is siraitia grosvenorii. The name most probably derived from the fact that Chinese monks first used the fruits to brew into medicinal drink, as early as the 13th century. Other common names for this fruit are arhat fruit, longevity fruit, magic fruit and Buddha fruit.
The luo han guo is very sweet and is said to be 300 times sweeter than sugar. That is why it is used as a sweetener in foods and drinks. By itself, when brewed, the drink is sweet enough, without adding any sugar. The fruits are usually picked fresh and then dried. The dried fruits can last for very long period. When we buy luo han guo we always buy the dried ones. After all, there is no fresh ones available commercially. The dried luo han guo is brownish in color and covered with minute hair around it. When cut into halves, the inside will show the thin brittle shell with lots of seeds surrounded by the shriveled pulp.

Health Benefits Of Luo Han Guo
In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the luo han guo is a "cooling" fruit, meaning, it dissipates fever from the body. The fruit is traditionally brewed as a health drink which helps treat sore throat, phlegm, cough, lung congestion and constipation. The luo han guo drink is regarded as a general health tonic, promoting general well-being for those who drink it.
In my location, luo han guo can be bought in the markets, or from Chinese medicinal shops and Chinese grocery stores. If you are out of my location, I am sure you can buy them from any Chinese grocery store. An added bonus in my location is that the luo han guo fruits are very cheap.
The Dried Luo Han Guo Fruits
My Very Simple Luo Han Guo Drink Recipe
I can assure you that there is no other simpler recipe for the luo han guo drink than the recipe I am sharing with you here. You only use the luo han guo fruit and boil with water. That's all!
To be more elaborate and making it a more colorful, delicious and exotic drink, you can add any or all of the following ingredients in your preparation. The additional ingredients that you can add to your luo han guo drink recipe are gingko seeds, dried longan, preserved winter melon strips, and finely shredded fresh winter melon. You can pick and mix them to your preference and taste. My favorite combination is luo han guo with gingko seeds, dried longan and shredded fresh winter melon. Please remember, you need to boil them together with the luo han guo fruit.
Now let's start off with my simplest luo han guo health drink recipe.
Brewing The Luo Han Kuo
The Luo Han Guo Drink
- 1 piece dried luo han guo fruit
- 7 cups water
- Wash luo han guo fruit
- Cut the fruit into halves
- Pour 7 cups of water into container or pot
- Put the pot of water to boil
- Put in the two halves of the luo han guo, with the cut surface facing down, so as to soak the fruit and dissipate its nutrients
- Put the pot of water to simmer for 30 minutes
- After 30 minutes, the luo han guo health drink is ready for consumption (drink it cold, hot, or at any temperature to your liking)
Do You Like The Taste Of This Health Drink?
From my personal experience, you can reuse the luo han guo pieces and add more water to boil them again to make more healthy luo han guo drink.
My favorite preference is to add gingko seeds, dried longan and the shredded fresh winter melon to the luo han guo. Please remember, you are to boil them together with the luo han guo fruit until they are cooked. Time taken should not be much different.
