My First Tiramisu - A Malaysian recipe

Tiramisu from Café Nero
Tiramisu from Café Nero

Do you know the literal meaning of Tiramisu?

According to the “The Trail of Tiramisuwritten by Jane Black (Washington Post Staff Writer)inJuly 11, 2007, the phrase from Italian tiramisù, which means “pick me up” or “pull me up”, was believed to be named from a reference to a list of espresso shots by Chef Carminantonio Iannaccone.

Some believed that the Venetian courtesans used to eat it before their gentlemen arrived for the evening because they believed it would give them the energy to make love all night long.

Tiramisu, what a lovely name it is?

I always believed a beautiful name should be associated with a beautiful story…

Me and my husband, Jason met via Tiramisu. We were colleague for a good year but we never talked to each other. Neither of us was expecting to fall in love from a piece of Tiramisu.

It was an evening way back to year 2003. I was on study leave. After a full day of intensive last minute study, I gave myself a break by relaxing in a café in town. I ordered a piece of Chocolate Mousse cake to fill my hunger. While I was about to start enjoying my delicious Chocolate Mousse, the waitress came to me.

“Excuse me, I am sorry, Miss, I took the wrong cake for you. What you are having now is Tiramisu, can I change it for you?” I was stunned and annoyed, how come such a simple thing can go wrong. However, I decided to keep the cake as the Tiramisu seemed so tasty and mouth watering. So, I replied her, “Can I keep the Tiramisu?”

“I am sorry, Miss. This Tiramisu was ordered by the gentleman on the next table. But, I made a mistake sending it over to you.” I followed her finger point direction, and then I saw him, Jason. He was also looking at my direction and smiling at me. He walked towards me and offered to let me have the Tiramisu. It is DELICIOUS! . . .

Well, our relationship started from there … …

After so many years, we always hunt around for DELICIOUS tiramisu.

After so many years, I finally made the First Tiramisu for my husband … … It is simple and quick. NO NEED TO BAKE. Anyone can give it a try.

The recipe that I used is EGG FREE as I am not comfortable in consuming raw egg.

Homemade Tiramisu

Here is the simple recipe I use:

1 pound of mascarpone cheese or cream cheese
3/4 cup of whipping cream
3/4 cup of icing Sugar
1 cup of strong brewed coffee (room temperature)
4 tablespoon of Kahlua or Rum
24 lady fingers
½ cup of cocoa powder

Semisweet chocolate, grated, for garnish

(i) Lightly spray 10 X 15 inch glass baking dish with vegetable spray.

(ii) Whip the whipping cream till thick and stiff with a mixer on medium to high speed.

Tips: Malaysia weather is hot and humid all year long. It is advisable to place some ice cubes on another bigger bowl and place the utensils (bow and beaters) on top of it. If possible do the whipping job in air-conditioned room.

(iii) Use high-speed mixer, beat the mascarpone or cream cheese and icing sugar on medium to high speed until they are smooth and creamy. Add in 2 tablespoon of Kahlua or Rum. Slowly fold in the whipping cream.

(iv) In a small bowl, mix the remaining 2 tablespoon of Kahlua or Rum with the strong brewed coffee in room temperature. Dip the lady fingers in the coffee quickly and place on serving dish.

(v) Put half of the mixture of cheese and cream on the lady fingers using a plastic spatula. Spread till thickness is even. Sprinkle or dust with ¼ cup of cocoa powder on it. Repeat with the rest of the Khalua/Rum coffee dipped ladyfingers on top of the cream. Spread the remaining cheese and cream mix evenly on top. Sprinkle the remaining cocoa powder till it covers the whole top surface.

(vi) Chill in for six hours or overnight. Before serving, sprinkle with chocolate shavings.

Tips:

(i) Where to get LadyFingers in Malaysia? Cold Storage Supermarket

(ii) Recommend to serve the tiramisu in martini glass

A Dose of Justice Served

I have almost lost faith in the Malaysian Judiciary System. This did not happen recently. It was built up over the years. However, the landmark ruling by the Federal Court on 21 January 2010 made me rethink the direction our Judiciary System is heading.
