Perfect Alternatives to the Traditional BLT
The BLT has been an American tradition for longer than I can remember. But let’s be honest; putting bacon, lettuce and tomato on toast isn’t exactly inspired. It could so much more impressive with a few modifications. Here are a few great ideas that will jazz up this summertime favorite using fresh ingredients. Some are soft, some are crisp but all are delicious! Try them out and see if you agree!
Onion Straws
The BLT is great, but for a little added zest try adding a pile of onion straws. They are sweet, crunchy and delicious and will help add a special kick to your favorite summer sandwich.
BBQ Sauce
Using a basting brush, slather a healthy layer of BBQ sauce onto the bacon slices. It will add a tangy alternative to mayonnaise that will make sure your taste buds sit up and say, “Hello!” Whether you like it sweet, spicy or tangy, adding BBQ sauce will liven up the traditional BLT in ways you've never imagined!
Cheese
I grew up hating tomatoes, so for many years I just ate BLs, not BLTs. Then one day I put a slice of American cheese on it and I was hooked. Of course as an adult I’ve switched to more palatable, adult cheeses such as sharp cheddar, smoked gouda and Muenster, or pepper jack.
Cucumbers
I add cucumbers to several wraps and sandwiches. They have a fresh, crisp flavor that defines summer. For those that aren't into lettuce, adding cucumbers allows you to have a crisp, healthy addition to your sandwich. It tastes oh so good!
Onion Straws, BBQ Sauce and Cheese
Yup, try adding all three and this sandwich is practically unrecognizable! But so much better than you ever dreamed! If you love a bacon, BBQ burger, just imagine how scrumptious this little baby will taste!
Chipotle Mayo
Mayonnaise has been a staple ingredient in the traditional BLT, but try putting a zesty twist on regular mayo by using chipotle mayo instead! Kraft makes a great chipotle mayo that can be found in the salad dressing aisle at your local grocer.
Alfalfa Sprouts
Pile ‘em high. They provide a subtle flavor and spectacular crunch. You can use them in place of or in addition to lettuce.
Apples and Brie
For another sweet, crunchy twist try swapping out the mayo for a layer of brie cheese and adding a layer of thinly sliced Granny Smith apples. The sweet, tart taste of the green apples paired with the smoky flavor of the bacon make a mouth-watering combination, while the Brie serves to keep the sandwich moist.
Avocado Slices
Avocado slices have added a great taste to turkey club sandwiches, but try adding them to your BLT and see just how amazing they can really be!
Guacamole
Add a layer of this chunky, delicious dip for a funky, south-of-the-border flavor. Loaded with fresh tomatoes, minced jalapeno peppers, and red onion, this complement to your sandwich is second to none. Delicious!!!
