Philz: A Coffee Revelation

My Conversion

I have been drinking Starbucks coffee drinks since high school. As you may be able to deduce, I am quite a fan. Taking a liking to the Starbucks brand is highly convenient, as there is a location in practically every city (and three in Los Gatos).

So when I say that I drove 30 miles to grab a Philz coffee today, rather than stopping at my nearest Starbucks, that should tell you something. Something about the power of Philz coffee.

Though I spent four years of my life at Stanford (a mere 4 miles from Philz), I was not introduced to this heavenly place until recently. I must either thank the friend who did so profusely (you know who you are) or curse her very existence. Now I crave Philz on a daily basis. Luckily I work closer to Philz than I live, otherwise this obsession of mine would be far less manageable.

What is Philz Coffee?

“Like Frank Sinatra was born to sing, I was born to make coffee.” Phil Jaber, founder of Philz Coffee

Philz began in San Francisco in 2003. It has since expanded to include a total of seven locations (soon to be eight) with four still in San Francisco. Founder Phil Jaber had been working with coffee blends long before he began selling them to the public, and his passion for coffee shows in each cup brewed.

Because that is how his coffee is made. The slogan "One cup at a time" perfectly describes their system. You order one of twenty of their unique blends, and your cup will be brewed at a drip station to your specifications. Most orders are sweetened with brown sugar and cream, but other additions (honey, soy milk, etc) can be requested. The most popular way to order a cup? Medium/medium, not too light or too heavy on sugar and cream.

Recommendations

It can be intimidating to walk into Philz for the first time and be given the important task of choosing one blend to try. Luckily, Philz employees are incredibly knowledgeable. Tell them what you usually look for in a cup of coffee or espresso drink, and they will be able to recommend something with which you will most likely fall in love. But if you want to go in with a game plan, here are a few of my personal favorite blends:

Tesora

"Seven years in the making and the first blend to ever be created, the Tesora is a treasure that consists of the most valuable and complex jewels of coffee. If it is your first time visiting Philz coffee, we highly recommend you order our Tesora blend. Tesora, A grand representation of our coffee and the way coffee should taste!" -Philz description

As recommended, this was the first blend I tried. It has a wonderful chocolatey flavor that hits the spot!

Philtered Soul

"A medium dark roast coffee at its sweetest. The Philtered soul has a burst of chocolate with an overwhelmingly satisfying aftertaste sure to please your souls’ deepest desires. A favorite of all coffee drinkers who possess a sweet tooth." -Philz description

This blend has bursts of chocolate, but to me, it is the nutty flavor that comes out strongest. If you are a fan of hazelnut lattes, you will become enraptured with this smooth cup of coffee. It is also a great blend to enjoy with a nice chocolate cookie on the side.

New Manhattan

"One of our new blends filled with busy, energetic flavors that cater to the serious coffee lover. This medium roast is coupled with an earthy aroma and a wine-like taste that will ensure you start your day off right. The New Manhattan is a distinctive blend that is a must-try for the risque." -Philz description

This blend had me at "wine-like." I do not know if I taste wine, but the complexity of its flavors (too many to begin to categorize) begs the comparison and makes this an intoxicating drink.

Mint Mojito

“And I said to myself, how can I make the desert green?… Because no one can make the desert green. So the first thing that came to mind, I went to the backyard and I get the mint. I cut like the top three leaves… and put it there.” -founder, Phil Jabar

A poetic description of how this delightful creation came to be. The mint mojito at Philz contains no alcohol, but it does come with a handful of fresh mint leaves muddled at the bottom of each cup. The base of this fresh treat is the Ecstatic Iced Coffee blend, a worthy choice on its own, but the mint elevates it to a heavenly level.

Yum. I a ma coffee lover and the local barista introduced me to his new assistant as a Purist. So I will give Philz a shot, pun intended. Thanks, HB.
