Product Review: Low Carb Tortillas

Updated on June 15, 2011

low carb diets and low carb meals

Have you noticed how many American recipes there are now for low-carb food? Grudgingly, even most doctors are now admitting than low carb diets have definite health benefits. Notice I said low carb diets – not no carb diets. Big difference. Low carb diets require low carb foods. That’s a no brainer, right? The problem is that low carb foods aren’t easy to find. That is, unless you plan on eating meat all the time. And of course, there are some low carb veggies you can add to low carb diets. But what about low carb meals? You know, something other than just meat, cheese, and non-starchy vegetables?

Low carb tortillas

One problem with low carb diets is that they can quickly become boring. You get tired of eating the same old low carb foods all the time. I’ve been on several low carb diets. I’m on one now, and I’m always searching for new low carbs food to add some variety. Just recently, I found some great low carb tortillas. I’ve tried several brands of low carb tortillas, and I was disappointed in all of them – until I tried this brand.

The low carb tortillas of which I speak are made by Ole Mexican Foods. They’re called “Xtreme Wellness tomato Basil Tortilla Wraps.” These low carb tortillas are soft and chewy, and they have a wonderful texture. They’re really delicious, and they don’t even taste like low carb tortillas!

Ole Low Carb Tortillas nutrition

The Ole Low Carb Tortillas have just 71 calories each. And these are big tortillas! Each one has only 2 grams of fat and no trans fats or cholesterol. They don’t have any sugars, either, but they do have 8 grams of protein each. These low carb tortillas even contain healthy omega-3 fats.

Are they low carb foods? You betcha! Each Ole tortilla has 17 grams of carbs, but 12 of those are fiber. That means these low carb tortillas have only 5 net carb grams each. That definitely puts them in the low carb foods category.

Low carb meals

I’ve created several low carb meals with these tortillas. First, I used them to make wraps. I just spread one with mustard, added turkey and lettuce, and rolled it up. This is a lot better for low carb diets than making a sandwich – even if you use most low carb breads.

Other low carb meals I’ve made with the low carb tortillas include pizzas. I blind bake the tortillas first at 400 degrees until they’re slightly crisp. I then add tomato sauce, garlic, herbs, shredded mozzarella, pepperoni, and mushrooms and bake until the cheese melts. These make delicious low carb meals! Just add a nice green salad with raw veggies.

Want ideas for more low carb meals and low carb foods? Use the low carb tortillas to make burritos, soft tacos, fajitas, and quesadillas. The fillings for these are usually lowcarb foods anyway. Add meat, chicken, fish, shrimp, cheese, peppers, onions, and sour cream. I had another idea, too. I’m going to cut some of the low carb tortillas into triangles and fry them. Voila! Low carb tortilla chips!

I’m sure as I experiment more, I’ll come up with some other low carb meals. These low carb tortillas are very versatile. I highly recommend them! And believe me, I’m a “foodie” who loves good-tasting foods. I’m not into low carb foods with no taste.

Where to find Ole low carb tortillas

Low carb tortillas make a great addition to low carb diets. They help prevent low carb diets from becoming mundane. They make low carb meals truly tasty and enjoyable, which helps you stay on track.

Sometimes the Ole brand is hard to find. The only place I’ve been able to find them is at Walmart, and sometimes they’re sold out. I haven’t searched online for Ole low carb tortillas, but I’m sure they’re available.

Give these low carb tortillas a try. If you come up with some great low carb meals that I haven’t mentioned, please leave a comment and share!
