What is a Scripture Cake?

A Scripture cake, also known as Bible cake or Old Testament cake, is one of those cake recipes that has been around for many, many years. The recipe is written entirely by used the scriptures from the bible. To be able to make one you needed to know your bible scriptures.

It was especially popular in the 1830's to the 1850's with ladies and young girls alike. For young girls it was used to teach them how to learn to cook and their bible verses at the same time. For the ladies of the house it was an opportunity to show off their cooking prowess and their knowledge of the bible.

These recipes were very much in fashion at home Bible Studies and sewing bee's. The recipes were written in bible verses only. The interruptation was left up to the baker. The biblical passage were rather vague about the exact sweetening , nuts, fruits and spices that were to be used.

There are several different varieties of Scripture cake recipes out there since the ingredients were left up to how your interrupt the scripture. Some of these recipes resemble a fruit cake and some resemble a spice cake. I have included three different recipes for Scriture cake along with a drizzeled topping.

I found recipes on fitnessandfreebies.com, dltk-kids.com and poofcat.com. I changed them a little to suit my needs. I have tried all of the recipes and they were all great, however, my family especially loved recipe number 1.

Scripture cake recipes vary quite a bit in the ingredients when they are compared and in the pans they are baked in. Thank you for a look at the recipes.

Beezus, when I fisrt started researching the Scripture Cake I was surprized by the many different recipes myself. These recipes are based on what was available in the particular household of the woman who wrote down the recipe. The interruptation of the scriptures for the ingredients is especially interesting. The women were able to make it fit what was available.
