Southern Food Gift Baskets

Gift basket ideas

I love getting and giving gift baskets! I’ve always found them fun to make, and all the gift baskets I’ve given seemed to have been much appreciated by the recipients. Sometimes I make gift baskets with a specific theme, like Christmas gift baskets or holiday gift baskets, but sometimes my gift baskets might contain lots of unrelated items. I especially enjoy making and giving southern food gift baskets. I’ve always felt that sharing goodies and other foods I’ve made with family and friends was a way of sharing part of myself. That might be because I’m a true southerner. If you feel the same way – whether you’re a southerner or not - you might want to consider giving food gift baskets, too. I hope the gift basket ideas I’m sharing with you here get you to thinking!

Breakfast gift baskets:

A hearty southern breakfast is hard to beat! Gift basket ideas for southern breakfast foods could include muffin mixes, country ham, gravy mixes, smoked sausage links, brown eggs fresh from a local farm, buttermilk biscuits, and jams and jellies. You might also want to add some cane syrup and some buttermilk pancake mix. Of course, with any southern breakfast gift basket, you have to include a bag of grits. Get “quick grits” – not instant grits. A good container for holding all the goodies would be a big cast iron frying pan.

Gift baskets for men

There are plenty of southern foods that would be good gift basket ideas for men. For beer drinkers, salty snacks would be appreciated, including parched peanuts, fried peanuts, boiled peanuts, and toasted pecans. Pecans can be toasted with just salt and butter, or you can make them hot and spicy by adding cayenne, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika to the nuts, along with the butter and salt. Another good salty southern snack is pork rinds. You can fry your own or buy skins from a merchant. Something else you might want to try your hand at for including in gift baskets for men are fried sweet potato chips. Slice the sweet potatoes super thin and fry them in hot oil. Sprinkle with salt as soon as they come out of the oil.

Gift baskets for men who like to grill and smoke meats might include barbecue sauces, hot sauces, and barbecue rubs. Seasoning mixes for grilling is another good idea. If you’re creative, you can easily make your own signature barbecue sauces and barbecue rubs.

Christmas gift baskets

I give several Christmas gift baskets every year, and I try to tailor-make them to fit the tastes and needs of the recipients. For example, I’m making one tomorrow for a family that provides a lot of work for my husband. This is a very wealthy couple, and really, there’s nothing that they need or want that I could go out and buy for them. They do, however, always appreciate one of my Christmas gift baskets of homemade goodies. Items I usually include in their Christmas gift baskets are candy, cookies, cheese spreads, spiced pecans, pepper vinegar, cheese straws, and dips – all homemade. I know this couple has their kids and grandkids in during the Christmas holidays, and the holiday gift baskets I give them provide quick and easy snacks.

When you give Christmas gift baskets or holiday gift baskets for special occasions other than Christmas, keep the recipient in mind when you’re planning the gift basket. Of course, if you know their favorite foods, your job will be easier. Knowing their hobbies and interests will help with food baskets, too. for example, you can buy chocolate in the shapes of golf balls, doctors’ bags, fish and fishing gear, nurses’ caps, tennis racquets, musical instruments, and so on.

Gourmet gift baskets

In the South, gourmet gift baskets might include practically any specialty food. You might want to borrow gift basket ideas from any of the sub-categories of southern food: Gullah, Cajun, Creole, Low Country, or soul food. For example, soul food gift baskets might contain a complete meal, like dried lima beans, country-cured ham (no refrigeration required), a large Vidalia onion, a couple of bell peppers, a bottle of hot sauce, and some corn muffin or cornbread mix. These are the makings for a complete soul food dinner!

A Gullah food gift basket would need to include traditional Gullah food items, like shrimp and/or crabmeat, onions, rice, garlic, celery, and bell pepper. Do a little research and find a Gullah recipe you like, and include the recipe and all the required ingredients in the gift basket. For the container, a special touch would be to use a handmade Gullah sweetgrass basket.

Gourmet gift baskets can be even more specialized, too. For the hot sauce connoisseur, a collection of gourmet hot sauces would be in order. For southern barbecue lovers, make gourmet gift baskets with specialty barbecue sauces, like Vidalia onion barbecue sauce, peach barbecue sauce, molasses barbecue sauce, orange barbecue sauce, and lemon-lime barbecue sauce. And remember – Coca-Cola was invented in the South, so you might want to throw in some Coca-Cola barbecue sauce. Add Jack Daniels barbecue sauces to gourmet gift baskets, too.

Candy gift baskets

Southern candies are wonderful gift basket ideas. Some you might want to consider are peanut brittle, pecan brittle, candied peanuts, divinity, chocolate-covered peanuts, chocolate-covered pecans, pecan turtles, and pralines. An easy-to-make addition to candy gift baskets with a southern flair could include pecan bark. It’s like almond bark, except that it’s made with toasted pecans. To make pecan park, just melt some white chocolate and some milk chocolate, and combine each with some broken pecans. Pour the melted chocolates on waxed paper and swirl them together. When the candy gets firm, break it into large pieces. Place the pieces in a clear plastic bag and tie the bag with a ribbon.

Discount gift baskets

If you don’t have the time or the desire to make your own food gift baskets, you can always buy them already made. There’s a huge variety of food gift baskets available online, including discount gift baskets. As with homemade gift baskets, however, the already made gift baskets need to be a “good fit” for the recipients. Look at several baskets before making your final choices, and compare ingredients, prices, and attractiveness. Below are some discount gift baskets that might interest you. If you don't see one that fits your needs, click on any of the baskets shown to see more discount gift baskets.

Mary, I think we southerners like making food gift baskets so much because of our "southern hospitality" genes! lol
