What is sustainability and what does it look like?

Sustainability is a way to live within the spectrum of resources available. Sustainable development is development that takes care of the present population’s needs without taking away resources from future generations. By using sustainable development, a society could use only the resources that are below or equal to the amount reproduced by the environment, leaving the Earth as they found it.

Transitions that would be needed to create this sustainable civilization would have to start first by the thinking of the people, the realization that if steps are not taken, the world our grand children live in will be very different then our own reality. The ever growing population is becoming too much for the Earth to provide resources for, so the population growth would have to cease. The amount of resource that a person uses on a day to day basis also needs to be lessened to a more sustainable amount. Transportation can be a key to reducing pollution, as well as finding greener ways to live and produce resources.

Our town recently put in recycling outlets to recycle paper, plastic and glass. It helps the environment to reuse resources instead of adding extra emissions to create more. It also benefits from the lack of waste storage.

Thanks for you Hub Page. But I think we are doomed anyway.

And I've been an optimist for most of my life. Keep the reactor in Japan in mind, that is our demise. It was fun while it lasted.
