Why is Three Twins Ice Cream™ Rated A Strong 5 out of 5?

5 stars for Dad's Cardamom Three Twins Ice Cream™

Why They Call It Three Twins Ice Cream™

When Neal Gotltlieb, his twin brother, and his brother's wife (who is also a twin) lived together in an apartment, they dubbed it "the twin." So, when he decided on developing a new ice cream company, it was apparent to Neal (the founding member) that only one name was worthy of his dream, Three Twins Ice Cream™. From its conception, the primary goal of this Petaluma, California based ice cream company was to remain loyal to the mission statement of producing, "inconceivably delicious" organic ice cream. Once I placed a creamy herb-flavored spoonful of their product on my tongue, it was evident that Neal was true to his word!

Real Organic Ingredients

What Makes It Organic

What's Not In The Ingredients (CCOF Certified)

Three Twins Ice Cream™ is certified by the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF)—a non-profit membership based organic certification and trade association, dedicated to promoting and supporting organic food and agriculture. The truth is that this organic ice cream is just that, a real organic dessert made from real organic earthly ingredients! Check the label for yourself, you will never find yucky stuff like artificial colors, corn syrup, carrageenan, or gum stabilizers. That's because the real high-quality natural ingredients do it better, and with a far more delightful result. The real organic eggs, milk, cream, cane juice, spices and vanilla used to create the outstanding flavors, truly develop into a mouth feel that will take your breath away while encouraging your taste buds to do a little dance; and dance they will!

What Is Carrageenan

The Truth About Carrageenan

You will NOT find it in Three Twins Ice Cream™! Used to thicken, emulsify, and make foods and beauty products silky smooth, carrageenan must be extracted through a very harsh process that includes alkali solvents, which is the same stuff you wouldn't put your hands in for fear your flesh would blister or be damaged. Now, the FDA considers carrageenan an organic product—because it is derived from red seaweed. However, the extraction process alone removes any good or healthy organic stuff the seaweed may offer, leaving (what is in my opinion) simply another man made poison that gets added to processed foods, and ice cream in particular.

Sustainable Production

What Makes It Sustainably Produced

Not only do the products taste amazing, but how they produce them is almost (but not quite) just as amazing. Three Twins runs their manufacturing site with sustainability in the forefront of their mind. Even as the bottom line in any business is important, it does NOT lead this earth-friendly company into bad practices. As a matter of fact, they work hard to offset emissions, use recyclable and compostable serving supplies—dishes made from sugar cane fiber, spoons made from potatoes, and cups made from PLA corn plastic— compost waste, and shout from a mountain top that they are proud members of One Percent For The Planet! The 1% thing means that regardless of profitability, 1% of sales go back into supporting earth-friendly business endeavors. Now that's a company I can respect!

Where Can I Get Three Twins Ice Cream™

The Oxbow Market In Napa, California

Even as you can now get their product in 35 states, I prefer to get my Three Twins fix at the Oxbow Public Market located in Napa, California. This is an amazing little shopping secret we Napians try to keep all to ourselves. However, I cannot deprive the world of the delicious creaminess of Three Twins. Among the many purveyors that reside inside this brilliant open indoor market—discover artisan delicacies ranging from organic grass-fed meat to decadent upscale bakery goods that can not be found anywhere else on earth—you will find the residing king of ice cream, Three Twins. The Oxbow public market is sure to remind you of an outdoor street market in some foreign land, but with really clean surroundings and impeccably chosen products. You can buy items to take with you and prepare at home, or have a seat and dine on yummy top notch edibles while taking in a little people watching. So have a seat, and find that nothing goes as well with a scoop or two of really good organic ice cream as does watching the world scurry by. Three Twins is sure to live up to any hype you may hear, I know I was pleasantly surprised when first I ordered up a scoop of the stuff!

Pros and Cons Of Three Twins Ice Cream™

Pros

The flavor, texture and shear goodness of the product can not be questioned. They exceed any expectations I have ever had about high quality ice cream. The ingredients are always stellar, and the manufacturing ethics they practice result in the earth-friendliest densely creamy-smooth ice cream I have ever found. I would eat this product every day if only my waistline would not display the results.

Specs Of Herbs And Spices In Cardamom Ice Cream

Cons

Even as the flavor and texture are divine, this is not a budget minded ice cream. It is an elegant pricey treat—that is actually worth the price in small doses. So, my recommendation would be to save it for those special occasions. If I had to mention any one thing that seemed marginally noticeable, it would be that with some of the herb and spice flavors, the earthy tones of the herbs and spices used can seem rather strong at first bite, but level off with further consumption. My favorite flavor is the "Dad's Cardamom" which is quite earthy and dynamically herby. Every once in a while I will feel as if the herb has not been ground down enough as a fine—but, delicate grainy—texture can be felt. However, the flavor and smooth feel of the ice cream itself far outweighs this concern, and frankly has never even so much as stalled my enjoyment of the product. I guess one will either appreciate that Three Twins uses those truly earthly provisions, or not. I choose to appreciate them!

Congrats on your win! I have to say, it's too bad there isn't more organic products with real ingredients in them! Thank you for explaining about carrageenan, I had no idea! I will pay closer attention to the labels I read from now on and watch for that!

Congrats on your win for this hub.

This ice cream sounds great. Sadly, I won't be tasting it any time soon as I have no plans to fly to the US in the near future. But fortunately we have a local organic ice cream and chocolate maker who makes similar flavours and quality, so I won't get too jealous! (Actually our local company tests out some interesting flavours and we had wasabi ice cream once. That was interesting!)

@ktrapp~ First, congrats on your win! Second, how great is it that your Whole Foods in Chicago carries Three Twins Ice Cream! You will not be disappointed in the quality of this product. Thank you for sharing your comments. Wishing you ice cream dreams!

HubHugs~

@Happyboomernurse~ Great to see you here in the comments! Being able to order the ice cream online (overnight) is something new that Neal Gotltlieb added to his customer service. He donates a portion of the $ to earth-friendly causes as he feels "shipping" is not as eco minded as it could be. Proving again, that this an all around great organization.

Thank you for your continued loyalty here on HubPages!

@Turtlewoman~ How lucky are you that you live where this wonderful organic ice cream was conceived! It is worth locating the shop nearest you to try. As for the salted caramel flavor, make sure your sitting down at first bite! Thanks for leaving your comments.

Cheers~

I am from the Bay Area, yet have never tried this organic ice cream. I might as well live under a rock. Thank you for introducing this brand. I will definitely go hunt it down now...especially the salted caramel one.

Great review and congrats on the win!

Congrats for your win on this beautiful, informative and interesting hub about a brand of ice cream that I've never heard of before.

You did a great job of explaining the care and quality ingredients that are used in making each batch and I love the fact that you included an online way to purchase it!

Sea salted caramel sounds to-die-for! I just checked the Three Twins website and I see it is available in Whole Foods near me in the Chicago area. I just may give it a try some time. Great story about this company and Great Hub - very deserving of a win in the review contest. Congrats.

Oooo...sounds delish! Sadly, I live over an hour's drive from there, and at the price of gas on a fixed income.... :-(

But, I'll keep my hopes up that it may show up in some specialty shops such as Trader Joes, which we do have locally....

Voted up, interesting and useful.

@cclitgirl~ Hey Cyndi, you should check out their web site, you can order this stuff online and have it shipped overnight!

Here is what Neal Gottlieb (owner) had to say about shipping his ice cream:

"The people have spoken and after countless requests to ship our ice cream to those who do not live near one of our Bay Area scoop shops or a grocery that carries our ice cream, we have decided to start shipping our ice cream overnight to consumers in all 50 states.

Because shipping ice cream is certainly not the most environmentally friendly activity for an ice cream company, we are donating $2 from each 4-pack of pints and $3 from each 6-pack to an environmental non-profit (check back later for where we decide to give these funds). These donations are above and beyond the 1% of our gross sales that we already give away through our membership in 1% For The Planet."

Neal

Founding Twin

I think this is an amazing company, ran by an amazing guy! Thanks for sharing your thoughts my friend! I muss you guys!!

OH man, serious, serious ice cream cravings just now. SERIOUS! This looks so good - I wish we could get it out here on the East coast - well North Carolina anyway. We don't have Whole Foods here, but I'm going to check our local Earth Fare store. :) Voted up and shared!

India, interesting article. I'm still getting my head around cardamon in an ice cream, I've only ever used it in curry sauce but then when you said you out it in your coffee, i came around to it; coffee in ice cream sounds delighfully indulgent and I now need to try it! Great review of this ice cream treat - sea salted caramel got my vote :o)
