What are M&Ms?

M&Ms are colorful button-shaped chocolate.

History of M&Ms

M&Ms were created by Forrest Mars, Sr. He got the idea from watching soldiers eating chocolate pellets with hard tempered chocolate in the 1930s during the Spanish Civil War. They were offered in a cardboard tube with the colors red, yellow, green, brown, and violet. During World War II, M&Ms were exclusively served to the military.

After the war, M&Ms started making some changes to their product. In 1948, M&Ms switched from cardboard tubes to black cellophane bags. Then, in 1950 they started putting a black M on all of their M&Ms to guarantee that you were getting a genuine product.

In 1954, not only were peanut M&Ms introduced but the black M switched to the white M that we see on all our M&Ms today!

Then they started working on colors it seems because in 1960 peanut M&Ms went from just tan to yellow, red, and green! Then 16 years later, in 1976, the orange M&M got debuted. That year was also the year that the red M&Ms got eliminated for a time due to health concerns over the dye amaranth (the product didn't have any of the dye they just eliminated it to ease worried consumers),

After that, M&Ms really hit it big! In 1980, M&Ms started selling international. In fact, today, M&Ms are sold in over 100 countries! Also, M&Ms were the official snack food of the 1984 Olympics!

Jump ahead to 1995. The consumers voted and blue was introduced to M&Ms! Then the next year in 1996, Colorworks and M&M Minis were created! The year after that? Green made it's way into the world! Jump ahead another year. M&Ms became the official candy of the new millennium. One more year still! M&M Crispy were born!

I'm wondering if the candy dye is part of the now scrutenized dyes that are suggested to link an increase in hyperactivity in children. I'll have to check a pkg next time I buy a bag. Fun subject.

What number is this for your hubchallenge?
