The Gamekeeper Restaurant - Boone, NC
First off you need to get to the North Carolina High Country if you have not. A wonderful area at the top of North Carolina's piece of the Appalachian Mountains. Not only beautiful but tons to do from camping, fishing, golf, etc. Home of Appalachian State University, Grandfather's Mountain and Linville Gorge.
While you are there you should treat yourself to a fine meal at the Gamekeeper restaurant. In between Blowing Rock and Boone, NC.
The Gamekeeper is built in the 1950's cottage of the founders or Camp Yonahlossee. Yonahlossee was built in the 1920s and is North Carolina's oldest girls' camp. The camp was purchased and turned into a resort in the 1980s. In 1987 the cottage became the Gamekeeper restaurant and in the year 2000 the present owners, Ken and Wendy Gordon bought the restaurant.
The Gordons respect their beautiful surroundings and are involved in local conservation as well as offering local ingredients in their dishes when in season. There menu features game such as duck, trout, pheasant, venison, buffalo, ostrich as well as beef, pork, seafood in addition to seasonal specials of the chefs creations. The side dishes are created with the same skill and passion as the entrees are and I have ordered more than once based on the side dishes. I must confess, if duck is on the menu that usually is my order.
The restaurant has a nice warm feel to it with its design and decor. Although the food is first class the settings are comfortable and relaxing.
My wife and I go to this area in the summer for a 'beat the heat' weekend. We have, for the past seven years, eaten once a year at the Gamekeeper. It has always been a meal I look forward to. I have always had a great meal. The servers are well versed in wine and food. We have had the pleasure of the same young lady taking care of us the last three. It makes for a well rounded dining experience when even the wait staff is passionate about food.
Not only is the Gamekeeper set in just about the prettiest place on this earth. The owners and staff of the Gamekeeper deliver a fine dining experience and great product. Check their website for hours as they vary with the seasons.
