The Green Bean Casserole Revisited And Oh So Delicious
The classic green bean casserole has been served all over the world for around 50 years now. Some people claim the first green bean casserole was developed by a lady named Dorcas Reilly in 1955. And that first green bean casserole had only green beans and cream of mushroom soup. Later green bean casseroles made by her contained green beans, soy sauce, and were topped with canned french fried onion rings. Those first casseroles were called green bean bakes.

Incidentally if you've never tried a green bean casserole made of green beans, cream of mushroom soup, and a tablespoon of soy sauce topped by crushed french fried onion rings you should give it a try. You can make this casserole in little individual dishes and serve each person their own personal green bean casserole.
Frozen Green Beans Are Tastier Than Canned Green Beans In A Casserole.
And in the fifty years since those first casseroles were made and served cooks have added and changed the recipe for the casserole and most people now call it green bean casserole. Let me give you a tip here. Frozen green beans are crunchier than canned green beans. And some people like to make the green bean casserole with regular green beans while other people like to make the casserole with french style green beans. Some people like to add thin sliced button mushrooms to the green bean casserole while some people including me like to run a jar of pearl onions through the food processor and add them to the casserole. I also fry bacon crisp and crumble it and add it to the dish.
Don't Be Afraid To Try New Ingredients In Casseroles.
There's all kinds of things you can do with a green bean casserole. If you think something would be very good with a certain ingredient then try it. You may come up with something you will make over and over for years to come. I came up with the unique ingredients below to go in my own version of the green bean casserole and I hope you will make it and see what you think.
I suggest taking a small jar of pearl onions and running them through your food processor. The pearl onions pureed just help to give your green bean casserole a tasty unique flavor you won't soon forget. And like I said I like to use frozen green beans as they maintain a crunchier texture than canned ones. The pearl onions will give your casserole a distinctive wonderful flavor. I know I love it. So why not give it a try.
When you prepare your mushrooms you'll want to slice a carton of button mushrooms very thin. You want your red bell pepper to be in very small pieces. It's important that any vegetables you add to your green bean casserole be cut up very small.
For Your Green Bean Casserole You Will Need
1. One Tablespoon Butter.
2. One Small Jar Pearl Onions run through the food processor.
3. One Cup Red Bell Pepper cut into very small pieces.
4. One Can Cream Of Mushroom Soup.
5. One Half Cup Whole Milk.
6. One Carton Button Mushrooms sliced thin.
7. One Fourth Cup Good Quality Sherry.
8. One Package (16 - 18 Ounces ) Frozen Green Beans.
9. One Can French Fried Onions.
10. One Fourth Cup Pre Sliced Almonds.
11. One Fourth Cup Cooked And Crumbled Bacon.
12. One Teaspoon Ground Sea Salt.
I think if you'll start using sea salt to cook with that you'll be surprised at how much better your food will taste. The sea salt has a lot more nutrients than the regular old table salt and it tastes much better than the ordinary table salt. You'll find ground sea salt for sale in the supermarket in the same place as the regular table salt. Some stores have various types and colors of sea salt.
Place your rack in the center of the oven and pre heat your oven to 375 degrees.
The sherry gives this green bean casserole a unique distinctive flavor that everyone I've ever served it to says it's the best thing they have ever tasted. Use a good quality sherry though. If you use cooking sherry you will be disappointed.
When I'm making a green bean casserole that I'm going to put bacon on top of I use a good quality bacon and I cook it carefully until it is crisp and then I crumble up the bacon and put it on top of my casserole. This way you'll end up with a casserole that will be better than anything you've ever tasted in the past.
In a large skillet add the butter, onion, mushrooms, and bell peppers and sauté your vegetables until they are done. Now you will want to spray a large casserole dish with vegetable cooking spray and mix all your remaining ingredients except the french fried onions and bacon in a large bowl and pour all the ingredients into the casserole dish. Now put your french fried onions on top and then your bacon. Now sprinkle on your almonds on top.
Place the casserole in the pre heated oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes and then remove from the oven and allow it to cool slightly before you serve it. I think you will find that the mushrooms are delicious in the green bean casserole and if you wish you can try various types of mushrooms in your green bean casserole. I like to use the button mushrooms.
When your green bean casserole is bubbling and the french fried onions and almonds are brown your casserole is done. Don't overcook your green bean casserole. And like I said if you have an ingredient you would like to try in your casserole give it a try. I love to experiment and I have quite often come up with some very tasty dishes this way.
I didn't add garlic here in this recipe but I often do add fresh minced garlic to my green bean casseroles and people just love it. If you do add garlic be sure to add it to the skillet and cook it along with your vegetables. Garlic tastes much better when it is cooked before you add it to a casserole or other dish.
When I'm making a dish like a green bean casserole I use the highest quality ingredients possible and I don't use anything fat free. I use whole milk. You can do what you like but that's your call. One thing I have started doing is that I now use ground sea salt instead of regular table salt. I think the flavor of the ground sea salt is much better than regular table salt.
I think you'll find that this green bean casserole will taste wonderful with a cool fall meal, or as part of a Halloween or Thanksgiving meal. This casserole goes perfect with poultry or beef. The flavors go together so well.
