The Story of Two Women Lager

A few thousand years before the existence of Christ, many Sumerian women collaborated and discovered the then-mysterious drink that is now called "beer." Viking women had also brewed in Norse society, which resided in the modern day region of Scandinavia. European ale wives had reached such success as cottage brewers that they were ordered to pay taxes on their brews. Women eventually lost their domination in the art of brewing during the Industrial Revolution. Today’s brewing trade is run almost entirely by men, but New Glarus Brewing Company threw a monkey wrench into the stereotype of brewers when they released Two Women lager.

A collaboration of two craft beer companies led by women, New Glarus Brewing and Weyermann Malting, is a unique combination that created an even more unique brew. The result is “Two Women" lager. It is a classic country lager brewed with Weyermann’s floor malted Bohemian malt and Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops. The combination of the chosen malt and hops has obviously worked out for the better in this simple, yet elegant lager.

Two Women Review

When poured, Two Women lager produces an impressive copper head of foam.

The aroma is malty and grainy, with subtle hints of fresh bread and fruit. The smell of toasted grain is also present, along with a slight herbal/grassy hint.

The taste and finish is smooth and light but satisfying. This makes Two Women refreshing and drinkable. Toasted grain and malt is very evident. The slight bitterness fits in just fine and is not overpowering at all. There is even a very slight fruity after-taste finish.

The Bohemian malt and Hallertau Mittlefrueh hops have apparently worked out very well for this county style lager, thus making Two Women a very flavorful lager that is refreshing and easy to drink.

Pairing Two Women Lager with Food

There are several dishes that pair very well with Two Women lager. A few cheeses are also great to pair with the country style lager. Fresh cheese is even better when paired.

A few main dishes like pork chops, steak, and pan fried fish, especially trout, are great when paired with Two Women lager. The easy-to-drink lager complements hearty dishes of meat very well.

Goulash and pasta salad pair well, also. The hints of toasted grain and bread-like aroma and taste complement such side dishes and appetizers. The lager isn't heavy and won't create a feeling of fullness when eating appetizers and side dishes before a main dish.

A few cheeses pair exceptionally well with Two Women lager, such as provolone, Colby, and Gruyere Fresh cheese pairs even better. Cheese and beer are a Wisconsin staple, so some people may not care for the combination.

Availability of Two Women

Two Women country style lager is available across the state of Wisconsin in 6-packs, cases, half barrels, and quarter barrels. The lager is brewed year around and is relatively common in Wisconsin supermarkets and liquor stores. The packaging of packs and cases comes in cardboard brown packaging with a green graphic of a horse drawn carriage hauling several wooden casks. The Two Women bottle label features caricatures of two women - a dark haired woman holding a bundle of wheat and a light haired woman holding a glass of beer. The caricatures are thought to represent the two women who lead the companies that collaborated to create the lager. The label is simple and follows the designs of other New Glarus labels, thus making it very simple and recognizable.

Remember, beers brewed by New Glarus Brewing Company are exclusive only to the state Wisconsin. Many people have expressed their want for New Glarus brews outside the state, but sale outside the state has yet to begin. Searching for New Glarus brews outside of Wisconsin will unfortunately yield no results. Samplers and packs are commonly available throughout Wisconsin, so remember to get a hold of some when visiting to ensure enjoyment once you cross over the state lines!
