Biscuit Making Tips To Make Sure You Make Perfect Biscuits

If you'll follow these biscuit tips you'll be able to make some of the best biscuits in the world. Not following these tips is why some people's biscuits don't turn out as good as they should. So read on and you will also be making great biscuits.

One thing a lot of people miss is that your oven should be pre-heated and at the temperature called for in the recipe before you put your pan of biscuits in the oven. Never put your pan of biscuits in a cold oven and then try to cook your biscuits. It won't work.

If your going to be doing a lot of baking especially biscuits and cakes your oven needs a heavy duty oven thermometer in the oven hanging from one of the oven racks. Check your ovens dial against the thermometer. Many home ovens can be off by 30 - 50 degrees so yes you do need a thermometer in the oven and you need to check it often and adjust the dial to get the temperature you need.

Be sure to measure your ingredients carefully. This is why you need measuring cups and measuring spoons so you can be sure to get the exact measurements you need.

Be sure that any baking soda or baking powder you use is fresh and still active. If its been in the kitchen cabinet for months you need to replace it.

If you'll make sure to do the above things you will in time be able to come up with biscuits that you can be proud of.

My Grandmother Hattie Propst and her daughter my mother Virginia Walker were both blue ribbon biscuit cooks. My Grandmother Hattie Propst has sadly passed away but my mother Virginia Walker is still with us and yes from time to time she still makes her blue ribbon award winning biscuits. My Mom passed away on January 6th , 2010 and has gone to heaven. I miss both of these fine ladies. I was at one time one of the most successful Chefs in the United States and its these fine ladies that taught me much of what I know about cooking.

Baking Powder Biscuits Recipe

Here is the recipe that a lot of men remember Mom making way back when. I have taken this recipe and changed it around to the point where I think anyone can reproduce the same great biscuits I did with this recipe.

Your Ingredients You Will Need For This Baking Powder Biscuits Recipe Are

1. 2 Cups of Sifted Plain All Purpose Flour

2. 2 Teaspoons Baking Powder

3. 4 Tablespoons Real Butter at Room Tempurture

4. 1 Teaspoon Table Salt

5. 3/4 Cup of Whole Milk

You want to sift your flour with a hand sifter once into a bowl. And then add your baking powder and salt to the flour and sift again. Use your hands to cut your butter into the flour. Be sure that the butter is very well mixed into the flour. Add your milk gradually until soft dough is formed. Turn your dough out onto a floured surface and roll the dough out to 1/2 inch thick. Cut your biscuits out with a 2 inch floured biscuit cutter or a small glass.

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees and make sure it is thoroughly preheated before you bake your biscuits for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown. Please be sure to not over work your dough. Try to basically follow along with my instructions and you will have great baking powder biscuits.

You can if you wish make those tiny tea biscuits with a 1- 3 inch biscuit cutter and fill them with country ham for a party or special event. They are also wonderful served with honey, butter, and jam or jelly.

Country Ham Biscuits

I love country ham stuffed biscuits. You'll never know how good they are until you make them and give them a try. Always wash your country ham very well under cold running water before you fry it to get rid of the extra salt. Then fry your country ham golden brown and stuff it in a homemade biscuit. I promise you those country ham biscuits will be some of the most delicious ever.

Well, good buscuits. Made them twice now, just made them with my son. I love the plain biscuits. Anything else in a biscuit just ruins it for me!

You always want to purchase fresh baking powder or baking soda. I have made this mistake myself many times.

vivi 4 years ago

I tried this recipe, but they didn't rise. My baking powder is expired, i used pastry flour and used 2/3 2% milk and 1/3 heavy cream (didn't have whole milk). I really thought it would work. :(

Dukes is my favorite but you can use any mayonnaise.

I am from Canada...and I want to try the buttermilk recipe, but we do not have Duke's Mayonnaise available here. Can I substitute something?? Regular mayo??

I make a garlic-cheese type biscuit that my kids love. You just make biscuits using self-rising flour, shortening, and about a big tablespoon of garlic. I use the kind in the little glass jar at the store. After cutting the shortening into the flour, add the garlic and enough evaporated milk to make the mixture soft, but not "wet". Then I hand knead and roll the biscuits into a ball and flatten them out, dip them into a bowl with melted real butter on both sides, then dip them into a separate bowl containing Parmesan cheese until fully coated on both sides. Then I put them on a baking sheet in a pre-heated (400*) oven and bake until golden brown. Usually takes about 20 minutes. YUMMY!! :) **Warning** They CAN be addicting!! LOL!!

okay crazyhorsesghost....I'm back, and still making biscuits. I did the cheddar cheese again, but added buttermilk this time...whoooo chile'! Thank you so much for sharing these recipes. I'm not much of a recipe person, a good cook though. It's just that my Mother and Grandmother cooked and baked without recipes, or measurements...they could eyeball everything, and meals, and baked goods always came out perfect.

kumar 5 years ago

I really liked the recipes. Also i want to start my own biscuit company in india, if so would you be able to share your knowledge to me. I need to varieties of biscuit recipes since i am initially planning to start a medium scale industry with a selling outlet.

Hoping to hear from you soon positively.

I made the cheddar Cheese biscuits yesterday, and they were awesome. The batch yielded 15 small biscuits, and I have only (2) left. I'm making more tomorrow. I did add just a dash of garlic powder to the mix though...I love garlic. Thanks for the recipe. I will continue to make biscuits this way for years to come.

Hi. Thanks for the recipes! I have been making the cheddar biscuits for years, and they are awesome; very similar to Red Lobster's biscuits. If you don't overwork the dough they will melt in your mouth!

I just made your buttermilk biscuit recipe this morning, and I'm happy to report it came out wonderfully!

With some scratch-made sausage gravy poured over top, these biscuits made a tasty meal. I added some orange marmalade to a couple for dessert - yum! Thank you for the recipe!
